Dumb rear view mirror problem...

Well I feel stupid.

Every time my rear view mirror has fallen off has been in hot weather (usually REAL hot weather), and I've never had a problem with remounting.

Well this time is different. I've tried mounting it three times now, and each time it falls off. The first time it was quite cold (20F maybe), and I only let it cure for a few hours. So I figured I'd try again and let it cue longer.

This time it was still cold (mid-20's) but I let it cure over night. Same result.

So I waited, and waited. Finally we had a 40F day, so I re-mounted it and let it sit for almost two days before hanging the mirror on the 'stud'. It lasted longer; didn't fall off the windsheild until I was almost out of my subdivision!!

Now, I've been using a knife to scrape all the old adhesive off the window and the metal 'stud' then I've been using wetdry paper to rough up the 'stud' and cleaning both mating surfaces with rubbering alcohol. Then using a permatex rearview mirror adhesive (item # 81844); same stuff I've always used with no problems.

So... am i retarded for trying to remount this in the winter? Any ideas for getting this to work. These cars are cop magnets enough without giving them extra reason to hassle me (not that the giant crack across the entire windshield doesn't have that aspect on lock-down anyways....). Thanks for any ideas you guys have!

Re: Dumb rear view mirror problem...

Get some permatex perma-poxy, the 5 minute epoxy. Some walmarts have it and about all advance autos have it. Clean both areas with rubbing alcohol before applying will help. It worked for me. I use the permatex epoxy on a lot of stuff. Don't get any other brand of 5 minute epoxy except maybe 3M but I have not tried 3M yet. All the other epoxies are crap and smell terrible. Make sure you have ventilation, all epoxies put off hazardous vapors, I got a sore throat for 3 days from the permatex epoxy because I wasn't careful.

Giant crack in the windshield? Mirror mount keeps falling off? What is keeping you from having the windshield replaced? Please don't confirm that the first sentance you wrote is REALLY true by failing to follow through with what you should be really be doing in this situation. Replace the windshield.

Well, its a cost thing as far as replacement goes. I'm trying not to put any money into this car... Though you are right the windshield does need replacing.

Have a auto glass place do it for you. People come into my shop all the time and it just needs to be done properly and without using the cheap stuff.
