Help my steering column is broke

I am hoping someone can help me with this - I have an 88 GTA with tilt column and a digital dash. The steering wheel also has the radio controls on it. I got in my car the other day and the steering wheel moves up and down and side to side approximately 1 to 1.25 inches. The steering wheel itself is tight, but where the column adjusts appears to be where the problem is. The lock housing is also rotating slightly making it nearly impossible to use my right hand turn signal. I am going to a junk yard to try a find a new column but was wondering if anyone had encountered this before or if anyone had any suggestions. I'd rather fix my original one rather then replace it.
Thanks,
Rob

did this with my old 89rs, took me and my buddy about 4 hours to do, but that was because it was the middle of february and we were outside doing it with a small space heater in the car. jsut make sure you have the required tools to do it

(tilt steering pin remover, steering wheel puller, lock plate compressor) and the job will go by very easily.
