Any one got any pics of a digital dash opened up?
I'm looking for pics that might provide some foresight for me when I take mine apart..
Particularly the lcd's..
Realistically a tear down would be cool to see..
Thanks!
I picked up a spare digital dash from the junkyard last year, took it apart, and cleaned it up. It's pretty straight forward, just take your time and be careful. Unplugging the screens is the hardest part - each one is just a piece of glass with pins coming out one end. You have to very carefully pry each one out of it's card.
Cool.. thanks..
Were there anythings indicating color?
I want to have regular white lcd's instead of the x-mass colors..
This guy just changed some simple lenses, and I'm wondering if I could do the same..
Yes, the colors come from printed plastic sheets behind each display. They're vacuum-flourescent displays, they don't produce any light or color themselves. Each segment in the VFD simply lets light pass through, or blocks it. The backlights inside the cluster provide the light source. I have also considered trying to change the colors of them. My idea was to scan all of the plastic sheets, change the colors in photoshop, then re-print them on something like transparency film.

Alright, so if I do this, then it's something that people will want to see..
It won't be till summer anyway, but if I decide to do it I'll document it.
Any idea if the film is glued to anything, or not?
Thanks again
Nope, the flim isn't glued in or anything, it's just wedged in behind each display. Also, you can remove the film without actually having to pull each screen loose from each board.
