Are seats side specific?

Hope this is not a dumb question. (Yes I searched the site for answers)
As we all know our drivers seats take a beating and mine including every single one i see at scrap yards have all the tears in the same places. I however have found quite a few passenger seats in absolutly perfect condition. No rips tears or anything. Minus the stench they seem to be a good buy at 35 bucks(if i pull it). Obviously i would have to change the hardware over to the seat from my current drivers seat as well as the headrest. The stitched 'Camaro' in the seat seems to be in the same place, be it on the passenger or drivers side. Are they interchangable?
If not i will just use it as my passenger seat. Somehow in storage a mouse managed to get inside my car only to chew the hell out of my passenger seat, that might I add happened to be in perfect shape.

Re: Are seats side specific?

Yes, the seats are specific to which side of the vehicle they go on. The recline mechanism has to go on the outside of the seats, otherwise you would have to reach down between the console and the seat to adjust it.

If you don't mind that small detail, then you could swap sides with them. I don't know if the seats can be disassembled and reassembled to swap the mechanism from side to side or not.

Re: Are seats side specific?

I didnt think of the recline part. Ill have to take a look at my drivers seat to see if it can be removed. I assumed it would come off with the seat bracket. Thanks!

Re: Are seats side specific?

This wont work. I was assuming that there was a similar bracket on the inner side of the seats. But that is not the case. Oh well.

Re: Are seats side specific?

I suppose you could remove the cover and transfer it to your driver seat, but there's always the chance it could rip during the process. 3rd gen fabric is old and most of it is rotten, even 4th gen seats have seen better days at this point. Your best option is probably to get one of the upholstery kits from Hawks and let a good shop put them on. The Covergirl (on here) also makes fine looking covers that look stock.

Re: Are seats side specific?

Is it the outer layer of foam, or is it the foam core? The new seat kits come with the outer layer sewed in.

Re: Are seats side specific?

On the bottom portion of the seat its to the core, with some core missing. But on the top portion of the seat its all the way through to the core of foam, with alot of core material missing. This is on the side support area closest to the door.

Re: Are seats side specific?

Correct, they all tear in the same location. There are a bunch of seats at my local pick and pull that are reusable. I just have to buy new covers. Like you siad they cost an arm and a leg so I haven't bought any yet either.

Re: Are seats side specific?

perhaps someone out there could devise a way to maybe sow additional fabric underneath the cover in that location to perhaps strengthen the area, i am always vaery careful with my seats i put it all the way back and lean it back before i get out, but it was torn when i got it so even 4th gen camaro seats tear there, it sucks

We are going to try to recover our driver side using a passenger side cover. I'm going to talk to a local auto upholstry guy & get a quote from him since I dont have many tools.
We have 2 passenger seats to canabolize if it comes to using both.
If not, I'll have an extra 1 if youd be interested.
I'll talk to the guy tomorrow evening or Tuesday.

Re: Are seats side specific?

I came across this inactive thread while searching a different seat-related issue. Like most threads, this one was never wrapped-up with a definitive conclusion, so I thought I'd answer the original question. It's probably too late to help the OP, but it might be helpful to people who need a new driver seat or driver seat cover.

No, seats are not side-specific. The driver seat and the passenger seat are exactly the same. Disassemble the seats and remove the seat covers, and you'll see. It's the attached hardware that makes a seat "side-specific." Swap the hardware, and you can swap the seats.

Similarly, if someone needs to replace the driver seat/foundation, just get the "new" one from a good passenger seat.

Likewise, the seat covers can also be swapped. It's easy to find good passenger seat covers in junkyard cars. Being used, the fabric will have already been cut for the side-specific finger-lift, so just sew-up that little 1/2" slit on the back of the passenger seat cover and make a new slit on the opposite side to fit the driver side lift. There will also be a couple of holes in the fabric where the base hardware was previously attached, but those will be hidden by the center console.

If you're a late-'80s Firebird owner with "deluxe" seats with the pouch on the backside, finding one of those seat covers in good shape will be nearly impossible. But you can probably find a cover with a good seatBACK-w/pouch, and you can probably find a good later-model passenger seat cover w/o the pouch; take the seams apart and sew the pouch onto the back of the good seat cover, take care of the little finger-lift slit issue, and you'll have a "new" driver seat cover in the correct style.

By the way, those little plastic finger-lifts aren't made to come off, so you'll probably break it trying to get it off. But new ones are still available. I've gotten them from Modern Day Muscle.

You can swap seat covers!!the only thing with that is the inertia button on the rear of the back of the seat, you will have to make another hole.
You don't need a lot of tools, all you need is a pair of hog ring pliers and strong hands!!!
