I decided to just make one thread so that I can put everything in here, and so that I can see the progress. So here goes I had a very nice 92RS that i sold about 2 years ago, kicking myself ever since so I decided to find another to build. After a trip all the way to detroit to look at a "rust free" 92RS, and ALOT of wasted gas, I came home and found this 92RS 5spd, ZZ4, comp cam, hooker headers, t-top car for $3700.


It needs ALOT of body work and interior work but i looked it over in all the usual areas for rust and didnt find any, plus the other two 92's ive owned were both 700r4's so i liked the idea of a 5spd. The interior was the worst so I decided to start there. It had the gray carpeted interior panels...I'm not a fan, so purchased a entire black interior from a board member. The front seats were garbage, I liked the idea of 4th gen black leather so after alot of searching i found this complete set out of a wrecked 2000 SS locally on craigslist.


I also picked up these 4th gen door panels on ebay...


I am also doing the 98-02 6 speed console swap, dash swap is down the road, I am waiting on brand new black carpet so that I can begin to put this all back together so heres how bad it was...




I will post more pics as i go along...

Thanks but im not a fan of stripes unless they are the factory ones...cars going all black with chameleon flames just like the red/silver one i had before.

what a perfect time to cut an access hatch to the fuel pump and fit in a panel for the next time the fuel pump goes bad

OR-

We can not cut unnecessary holes in our cars and when the time arrises, we can swap the pump out the way it's supposed to be. I've done it 10 times, it's really not that bad.

Thank you for not encouraging full-body stripes. They just dont work on our cars. Heritage stripes (only on the hood and decklid) look amazing. Way better than full body stripes.

Agreed. Heritage stripes or none at all IMO. I know alot of people dont care for the flames but i really liked them on my red one and I think the Chameleon will tone it down a lil bit, but still leave just enough to catch someones eye.

Seriously. I am looking for another 3rd gen and saw a very nice 88 Iroc and saw that the owner did the access hole to it. I walked away from it. If he is that lazy to do the job the right way, what else could of he half-assed. . Do it right the first time, replace the bolts and coat them with Anti-Seize for down the road and problem solved. I can probably swap my pump in the same time if not close to my buddies with his access hole on his 89 GTA (PO did it).

Anyways, Very nice car. I like the 4th gen interiors in our cars, fits well but I am also a fan of the stock interior. Keep all the old parts around, you never know when you might get bored of it.

Ordered my complete carpet today in black from 1A AUTO, also bought 25 square foot of dynamat off Ebay. 1A AUTO had best prices along with free shipping and it was in stock. Never thought I'd be so excited about carpet lol. Cant wait for it to get here...

Got my order of "FATMAT" in today, stripped rest of carpet and drivers seat and was really pleased with the conditions of the floorpans on a 20 year old t-top car...


Started laying the FATMAT....25 square feet doesnt go very far I had to order another 25...

Sorry, but I love those stripes! And I used Fat Mat before, but frankly, I don't think it is as good as Dynamat. I can get Dynamat for about 1/2 price, so that and Dynaliner is going into my next car(current RS burned to the ground last week and I am currently in mourning)...

micktroup- i'm getting married in july so kinda on a budget with the car lol, sorry to hear about your camaro. I was in mourning ever since i sold my red one.

camaro1122- its the asphalt type, first time i've ever used it, and i gotta say im pretty impressed. VERY easy to work with, went back after i laid it all and hit it with a heat gun i bought from harbor freight for 13 bucks

Look into the Dynaliner too- it apparently is great at sound deadening. Are you doing the roof under the headliner? That should make a HUGE difference...

I don't remember how much I used. I used Dynamat on the doors- instant improvement in noise and heat reduction. I used a layer on the inside of the outer skin (and I have the scars to prove it!) and a layer on the outside of the inner skin. Also made the A/C MUCH more efficient. I used Fatmat on the trunk and then on a replacement door after my 'f'ing neighbor backed into my car(!) but it was nowhere near as good, in my opinion. It also didn't stick anywhere near as well...
And Cookie, if you think it is expensive working on these cars when you are getting married, you should try it when you are divorced like me! Oye!!! (Hope I didn't jinx you- all the best with the wedding).

I do like stipes on cars, but not all the way down -
no lower than the bottom of the headlight buckets look fine on 3rd gens.

I have cars that i regretted selling, bought one just like it and made it look the same.
It just never was the same.
I may get the same car, but I come up with different ideas.

Your interior build seems to be going well.
Black interior with a black car always looks good, a pain to keep clean, but it does look good.

camaro1122 - the only time you notice the smell is right when u pull off the backing to the adhesive.

one92rs- i ended up buying 50 sq feet of FATMAT of ebay w/ rollers and knives for 100 bucks shipped and shipping was super fast, if your interested ill get you the sellers name.

micktroup- its a t-top car so i dont know how much lining the roof would gain me, i mainly wanted to keep out road noise, not a big stereo guy last 2 92rs' ive owned have had 2 12's thats MORE than enough for me I plan on going completely with Alpine stuff, type s or type r havent decided yet.

Now onto more good stuff...HAD A TON OF DELIVERIES IN PAST TWO DAYS

Yesterday more FATMAT arrived, my carpet from 1A-auto arrived, my Q-logic kick panels came from canada, and today my steering wheel from a board member arrived...thing is MINT Heres some pics of more parts/progress...






going to try and get front carpet, seats, console in tommorow its raining here in cincy and no sun to lay the carpet out in before installing it or id be in the garage right now!!

no actually they are worn out, when i went to parts store to get those and the struts for the hood they only had ones for the hood in stock, so i havent replaced the hatch ones yet...almost everything is in ive been in the garage all day will post pics in a lil bit.

Started today by running a power wire for the drivers seat, since the new one is power. My Dad helped me a ton today. Heres pics of everything we got done today, Had a issue with the steering wheel hope to have that resolved in a couple days...




New seat belts.




As i said before we had a issue with the splines on the steering wheel the '91 wheel i just bought has 2 large spline gears at 12oclock and 6oclock, but wont work with the steering column in my '92? Did GM really change the columns after one year? Gonna have a machinist at my work see if he can take out the two large gears and make it work....ill post pics when it and rest of plastics are in im waiting on more deliveries. Let me know what you guys thing im pretty pleased. I've decided to go ahead and do the dash swap as well

Looks good ! !

The one main thing I notice, especially with the 4th gen seats.
Third gens came with a black interior, 4th gens never did.
4th gens came with a ebony interior, which is a softer black.
I do automotive upholstery for a living, so maybe I notice it more than most.

When you go to replace the dash with a 4th gen (I have one from a 02 SS if you are interested)
Keep people like me in mind if you do not want to store the original one.

Fixed the steering wheel issue, took out the 2 wide teeth, heres a pic of it in the car.

Also picked up a dash out of a 2000 SS for my dash swap...should be getting started soon as i find a firebird cluster...


Also can anyone tell me exactly what years the old steering wheel was put in camaros? Im going to sell it and im not sure myself what years they used that type. Thanks.

carpet was piece of cake man, if you do it...its worth it to spend the 100 and do the fattmatt you wouldnt believe how much quieter/tighter? the interior feels and sounds going down the road.

Doing a great job!!! I am wireing up all my stero equipment and alarm this week, start carpet next week. How long did the cockpit section take you? since I have a vert thats all I need

did the whole car, along with seats and console in a day. I had a extra set of hands moving the carpet around though, my dad helped. Im not ready to do my stereo yet, but i ran a 2 gauge wire before i laid the carpet so it would be there later on and i wouldnt have to cram it under the door sills.

The firebird radio pod wasnt a great fit, thats another reason im doing the dash swap, it just didnt look right either.

Thanks, gonna tackle the door panels after i get the dash wired up. They are harder than everything else since theres not much info to go off, ive only seen it done once, and that guy basically tore the panels apart and started from scratch, so I've got alot of work to do on those still for them to fit.

Cars looking good man, Do the back quaterpanel pieces inner change with the 3rd and 4th gens? its pretty much just dash and door panel swaps right? i like the black leather but mine wont have A/C so im kinda iffy on that part just yet, i may just go 4 point harness and racing buckets.
