Small light above the headlight switch and dimmer switch.

Hey guys and girls,

So my recent adventure was to find the small box light above the headlight switch and dimmer switch. I have a 92' Firebird. Not sure if this is the same for all models. As far as I know they don't sell these anymore.

Basically I pulled 2 extras from junked Birds and now I have 3 total. Unfortunately none of them work. I fiddled with one and managed to replace the weird wired light bulb inside with a 2723 bulb. I hooked it up to a battery and it lit right up. I have one more 2723 and I can put it in the other light housing. I'm going to use mine and make a LED version to match the other LEDs I'm placing in my car.

If anyone is interested in one of these so they don't have to mess with theirs let me know; I'll assemble them around work. I wouldn't be looking to make a profit; but to cover any costs involved (shipping and bulb).

I can also post pics of how I did mine to give ideas if anyone wants to redo theirs.

Just let me know if you're interested in either option. I don't want to waste the time if no one cares or if you have already figured this out. lol

A pic would help a lot.

Give me about a day or two. I'm trying to put my LED one in. Have to figure out which side is positive and negative but every multimeter I find isn't working. I'll have pics up of what I did.

Re: Small light above the headlight switch and dimmer switch.

Sorry it took so long. I probably took too many pics but I guess more is better than less. If you're planning on making an LED one I don't suggest following this completely. You need to pay attention to the positive and negative sides. The "A" side of the connector is the positive and that's the side that needs the resistor. The resistor I used for my LED one was a 330 ohm.
Here we go:

1.

There is a tab on the bottom and 2 tabs on top of the white housing. Just use a a flat head to press them in and pull it out. You'll have to squeeze the connector through the opening as well. Just slightly bend the top of the opening.
EDIT: This first picture doesn't have the head because it was the LED one already on my car. The housing that I fixed wasn't from my car and was already out. I'm planning on leaving the head off to see if the lighting is better that way.

2.

I used a flat head to bend these two black tabs back. The whole white head and black piece will come off to expose the bulb.

3.

I broke the white pieces of plastic out on the inside. The limited the room for the bulbs I put in. I'd leave the parts in that hold the orange lens though. From here I used some needle nose to clamp on the wire and pull it through so I can have room.

4.

I cut off the wires just under the bronze crimps. A lot easier than trying to only take the crimp off.

5.

Now just remove some of the rubber/plastic to reveal more wiring.

6.

This is the 2723 bulb (you could probably find something that fits better but this is what I have). Get 2 small crimps and a crimper.

7.

Cut off about 4 strands of wiring. That seemed to be the best number for the 3 that I did. Twist the remaining strands together and the crimp on it. Insert the end of the bulb into the crimp with the wire and squeeze it together. Make sure it can't come back out easily. Now you should be done and can push it back down into the housing.

8.

Test it to make sure it works. =) Hope this helps everyone.

I ended up making two LED ones. One is white and one is blue. I decided to make my cluster blue and my head unit is blue so I wanted it to match. I have my blue one on there without the housing head so the slit doesn't limit the light so much. It gets hidden well with the cluster bezel on.

Note: The incandescent one pictures above has the bulb leaning to the right. It doesn't affect it too much but does show a little bit of dominance on that side when it comes to lighting. I didn't bolt it into place and check to see if the lighting on the switches was affected. I don't think it'll be noticeable.
