question for those who have installed aftermarket steering wheel in an airbag car

Is it absolutely necessary to remove the airbag coil/wire from the column prior to installing the aftermarket hub? I do not want to cut the airbag wire from the car just in case I want to return the car back to stock form and fishing the entire airbag wire out of the column looks like a ton of work.

Re: question for those who have installed aftermarket steering wheel in an airbag car

Why would you ever want a first generation airbag exploding in the direction of your face? I'd rather take my chances with the potential injury accident than suffer the accident AND the Looney Toon exploding airbag...

BTW, if you pop the terminals out of the connector, the airbag wire(s) pull out pretty easily. Easier still to just pull the fuse, clip the wire and toss the wire and clockspring in the trash.

Re: question for those who have installed aftermarket steering wheel in an airbag car

I do not want to cut wires on my car. The car is too clean and has low miles on it so no permanent modifications will be made. Do I want to run the airbag, no, but I'd like to eliminate it in favor of an aftermarket steering wheel but still have the option to put the OEM wheel back in the car

You're not cutting the wire on the car, you're cutting the wire on the airbag coil. You can run the original wheel, and original airbag, without it connected. No one will ever know... It'll be our secret...

You can barely see them nipples. And these guys are REALLY looking.

Pop that big stupid yellow connector off the end and you can pull the wire out without too much trouble. Or just cut it off and it pulls out so nicely it's gratifying. No one will ever know if the airbag is connected until someone plows it into a parked car at 4 in the morning, in which case it won't matter because the car won't be original anymore anyway.
