FYI GM changed the oil filter thread size on the new F-body pans. It now takes the AC Delco pf 48 filter. The 44 and 46 will not fit.

rubber mounts so it leans back a little causing it to sit a little higher but not by much.

I've got some pictures that might help you out. I just bought an LS1 intake today to get my stock hood on. I'm going to have to fab up a new Alt. bracket to get it under the hood also. Don't trash the cheap air filter and dirty car though, it's still under construction.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

Should be interesting in a 'bird, since the 'birds have a lower hood line, meaning, it would stick up even more.

What is the higher point of the LS, above the hood line? And where at on the intake?

OK guys, good news, just got the trans dapt mounts in the mail today, and got the car intake so hopefully I will be able to get some time off work so that I can get some things taken care of.

Things I still need are, the car accessory brackets and then just get my intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets ordered. At this point I'm really hoping to have it running by the end of febuary so that I can get all the bugs worked out by Power Tour.

I guess nobody, with a truck LS, is willing to actually MEASURE it, to see how much higher the hood would need to be.

1987Earthquake, I know you said your car was hours away, but the others that have truck LSs, and not measuring......

FYI If you go with the F-body accessories you will need the F-body balancer. There are four different balancers for these motors Truck,Corvette, F-body, and the GTO.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

Heres what I got. 27" from the tip is the highest point (the alt. on mine, if you're not using the truck brackets then the TB is maybe 1/2" lower) it's about 3" higher measured from the top of the fenders. If you are using the Truck bracckets then the alt. is 21" from the drivers side fender.
Hope this helps.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

hey Slick00m, did you use all the truck accessories for those pics? If so, was the only clearance problem the height of the alt? I'm just curious to any frame, or steering clearance problems.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

Yes, those pictures are with the truck accessories. The only problem with the truck brackets other than hood clearance was the AC compressor. I had to remove it, since I didn't notch the K-member. Everything bolted up without any problems. If you are going to use the truck manifold and brackets you'll need at least a 3" cowl and it will be close. I originally intended to go that route, but recently decided to order an LS1 intake and fab my own alt and AC comp bracket (hope to have that done by summer).

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

sweet, thanks for the info! I'm probably gonna be doing that swap, and I REALLY hope it fits under my RA1. Its real close to 3 inches, but I'm not positive. I was worried about those accessories tho.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

I may end up giving the truck manifold a try to try to keep expenses down for a little bit. I have a 2 or 2.5 inch cowl hood that i'm going to throw on for a little while, and if it doesnt work, i will just have to put on the car intake thats sitting in my room. I'm going to get accessory brackets and such ordered this week, and then I need to figure out what I'm going to do for the ducting to the throttle body.

Its good to finally see some pics of how high it really is. Looks like a WS6 type hood on steroids with a different air intake might work

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

I'm in the beginning stages of a similar build. I'm doing a 6.0 with a LS6 intake and cam, full bolt ons. I'm going to get a LS1 F-body accesories, oil pan, and wiring harness. T56/3.73. Down the road, I plan to run a custom grind cam and LS3 intake/heads.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

I think i'm going to be getting the accessory brackets ordered on friday and then hopefully I will get some weekends in the near future so that I can actually make some headway on this project. This swap is getting a lot more popular it seems, and I'm hoping that I can make some money back in the truck intake and the accessories to help offset the cost of new stuff.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

I'd really put the money into a car intake, preferably a LS7. The truck intakes are designed for truck work, not for cars. The intake will cause the power to fall short on the top end compared to the ca intakes.

That's what I'm doing. The intake and cam from the C5 Z06s. That's until I can afford to upgrade it.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

Lots of good info in this thread. I was concidering keeping my truck accessories and intake on my 5.3 but ended up finding a deal on LS1 F-body Accessories for $350, intake for $50, and TB for $40. So ill be going that way with it now. Which im pretty happy about because i can retain the stock look and hood

I've always been amazed since the introduction of the Vortec how much power they make! I mean the 4.8 Stock (.9 less liters than my car stock) and still makes 70-80 hp more! i know my engine isn't that great but wow that 5.3 in the camaro will make that some B**** Move! Keep up the good work and when your done post 1/4 mile times and such

The 1/4 times with the stock motors should be in the 14s maybe high 13s if I had to guess.

In a full dress 4x4 extended cab with a 5.3 runs bottom 15s in the quarter stock i believe. A kid from my track raced one at finals this year after pulling his trailor out there

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

I was giving that estimate because I don't think a 5.3 equipted 3rd gen will outrun a LS1 4th gen. It might go faster at lower altitudes, but around here I'd say that would be about where it would stand. Stock 4th gen LS1 cars go from 13.8-14.2s.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

Granted I have a 6.0l but I really think I can hit the 12s with some traction. Right now Im running high 13s but I'll spin through 1st and 2nd, and on the 2-3 shift and 3-4 shift. The only way I can get 13s is to really baby it off the line and role into it. I don't even go full throttle until 3rd gear. I think with some good tires and if I can get this wheel hop fixed I'll be in the 12s without a problem.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

Well I just figured I'd throw in that I just changed jobs, and I should have more time for the car, I'm going to order all new accessories and brackets for the front for an F body, except the water pump, that will be from an 07ish truck, the water neck is at a different angle. I'm still not decided on the oil pan situation, I will probably throw it in, see how low it is, and then decide on the oil pan later.

OK now for the questions again. What is the best way to patch in and make the stock gauges work?

What year(s) 5.3L engines will fit in our cars? Do you really need the Whole truck to make this Swap Work? Or Would an Engine with the Wiring Harness and ECM/ECU alone be enough? a 1988 700r4 wont work with this engine will it? I dont mean to Hijack the Thread. I Cant sleep at night Im always thinking...

The electronic throttle isn't really that big of a deal as long as you get the pedal and the TAC module.

A 2002 and earlier look to be the most straightforward swap.

You can use a 700R4 IF you buy an adapter/spacer for the tranny. I know GM makes one that is fairly cheap but I don't know what the part number is. You will be better off with a LSx 4L60E though. They will handle far more abuse than a 700R4 will and you can tune your shift points and the line pressure through the 5.3's PCM.

yeah, thats the way to go, look up car craft article on budget 6 litre and they took a LQ4 truck 6.0 put L92 heads and a big *** cam and longtubes and an 850 cfm carb and got 530-550 hp huge #'s, (6.0 is the only way to go!!!) "that rhymes pretty nice as well!!

i'll be sticking with the stock heads for a while, its going to be a kinda budget nitrous build shooting for mid/low 9's.

Re: 5.3L into 87 IROC

That is the point of the heads, because they make HUGE I mean HUGE power over the stock 6.0 they flow like crazy which will make your NOS motor Breath, but the best part is you can buy them directly from GM completely assembled for less than $1000.00, they are the budget buy of the century for a 6.0L. You should really consider this and try to find the money for them because they are worth their weight in gold, trust me on this one!! Please read the car craft article on this and then you will see how bad *** they are! Check out this link below
