temp guage sender

How are you guys hooking up the temp guage on your ls motor. I really don't want to drill anything on my engine. is there another way to connect the temp gauge without having to drill anything. Is there a sender that will screw into the head?

There is a lot of onfo under ls1 swas faq. You can get an adapter from Autometer. I bought mine at speed inc. pt#aut2277. Mounts to the passenger side head 1/8 pipe thread. Good luck

Re: temp guage sender

I bought an extra water temp sensor for about 20 bucks from a dealership, then put it into the passenger side head (theres a plug at the back). I found my stock gauge water temp sender wire and soldered a plug to it. I cant gurantee the acuracy of it since the gauges work on different ohm sweeps, but others have used it with fair confidence as an indicator for too hot, too cold, or just right.

Re: temp guage sender

Can you not just use the three prong sensor to replace the one in the driver's side head?

Re: temp guage sender

I rethreaded a stock 3rdgen sensor and put it in the passenger head.
They also sell adpapters if you don't want to rethread it.

Re: temp guage sender

Ok my problem with putting the sender in the pass side head:
1. It's too close to the heater box.
2. Pain in the *** to get to.

Will the three prong sender work in place of the two prong sensor?

Re: temp guage sender

yea that 3 prong should work fine, i just didnt do it because my harness only had the 2 prong plug, and i just thought it would be easier to keep em separated.

Re: temp guage sender

I don't think the 3 prong will make the gauge accurate, but I guess it will give you the general idea.
Also it won't be in stock anywhere and most of the parts places are idiots and will order you the 99+ one because their computers list them wrong.
So you'll wait a few days for the wrong part.
Have fun.

Re: temp guage sender

anyone know the pinout for the three prong sender. I just need it to let me know if it gets too hot. My plans are to put all ultra lites in but can't afford it now so I just need it to get me by for now

Yea in all rights it shouldnt work, because the gauge and the sender are 2 different ohm sweeps. More or less this is an idiot gauge to let you know when hot is too hot and such.

however, on my setup I boiled water in a glass and put the sensor in and gave it power. it showed up in the 200 area. So it seems close enough for me to feel confident in getting as good a reading as a stock gauge can get...

Re: temp guage sender

autometer adpater would do the job
(P/N 2277) and a 1/8th temperature sending unit (P/N) 2259

Re: temp guage sender

F-chicken,
Single green wire. Went to sensor in the head up near #1 cylinder... at least that is how my '83 was. I'm still using for my dash, and driver info... putting the old style sensor in for the gauge to read from. ECM reads from regular LS sensor.
