this is my current build on my 87 iroc. been working on the car for about 5 years with the old tuned port set up but i decided to ditch all the maintnance and break downs and go with a lsx conversion with a 06 gto tranny that was adapted to my sbc. ditched the old school dash and went with a complete 02 dash and even got my FUEL gauge to work!!!
Engine was off 02 SS with 50k miles included

I started off by removing most of the wiring. Me and my brother have already experienced a ls1 swap in the past his his 3rd gen.
After hours of working on his car I gained a bit more experience and my set up was a bit more organized..
My engine was far gone I was ready to start prepping the engine bay for a better quality look.
My previous set up consisted of a cammed 350 mated with McLeod bell, mn12 GTO tranny and 4th gen rear differential
My intentions is to build a reliable 80s performance vehicle with the LSx drivability performance, yet fuel efficient, with modern interior and able to say I built this car.
I used esi data output for all the schematics for the 4th gen wiring.
Im attempting to run the evap and a fully functional cluster.
The process took a few months the only problem I came across was using a ls2 bell housing and finding the right starter. After researching the least expensive starter was the OEM Mitsubishi starter for lsx goats.
I purchased the ls1 with a k member and brake set up off ls1tech member.
As well as the fuel tank and dashboard.
Small appliances were supplied by the local parts store
All the fuel fittings and adapters were from others online or summit
Al work was done by myself with help of my close friends
And soon enough need some exhaust work for the y pipe
i used two power distrubution blocks. from the battery as the main 12v source and power with ignition.
before with tpi wiring
after with Spohn motor mounts in place.
using the ls7 clutch kit
Moved back to the engine and worked on the smaller components
Used autometer adaptor fitting for the individual gauges for my oil pressure and water temp. aside from the cluster .
Used a summit radiator and hoses from AutoZone to run the cooler routed back to the power steering pump unit fuel rail fittings and evap controls etc,
Here I used 90* swivel fittings from the local speed shop
As well as compressor fitting which I used to shorten the 4th gen fuel feed line
I extended the wiring from the evap canister module, and the sending unit up to the dash .a whole lot of wiring.
Re worked on the quick disconnects and added fuel hose with some good clamps. These fuel lines were routed up by the rear area united to the fuel filter and hard lines to the front on the engine bay.
I used the walbro fuel pump a few mods. And this is what it looked like with a opening in the cargo area for easy access sealed up pretty good.
Cut 2.5 inches off the filler neck to clear the fuel door
The sending unit harness extended sodered and united to the control plugs
Once I received my harness from lt1wiring . Couldn’t be easier.
Pictures below everything was test fit and included with the obd2 port, fan relay, fuel pump relay and extended 2.5 feet for easy installation
Just scaring u guys a bit.. jk a bit unorganized but wire loom can take care of this.
The rest of the wires on my cluster plug consisted off the signal off the harness vss, oil temp
WOW awesome job thus far, I have to tear my engine out and give it a once over, long story short I've either spun a bearing slung a rod or possibly blown headgasket and over heated doing god knows what type of damage. I will start to tear it out tomorrow after work, but I dont know how long it will be to inspect the engine, and might have to jump into the 350 build I have been thinking about.
Quick financial question for you terr, ball park about what do you have in your set up. I doubt that I'll emulate it at this point and time, but it'd be nice to see what a true "sho 'nuff" bad *** motor/tranny combo can be had for.
Somewhere along routing the wiring for the fuel I got lost. My odometer turned on and a lot of unnecessary light were on.
Within time ill take care of that
Car cranked over yet has to be tuned
I will currently be working on my exhaust fabrication due to the fact that I am using stock manifolds. o2 sensor bongs in place and maybe work with a 4th gen y pipe that I have.,
Current pictures of my main cheerfulness. Fully functional gauges and soon to finish off the rest of the missing pieces
i dont have too many data scans. this is a quick overview of the build. i might leave some question unanswered but ill keep you guys updated once i gather up my info
You are using the gto tranny correct? Did you have to modifiy the shifter location or did you set it back farther than normal? It looks like it lines up well with the center console.
I see your in So Cal... what are you going to do about emissions? Do you have EVAP, 4 o2s, smog pump, cats, etc?
i will be workin with oxygen sensors. and evap

i disassembled the gto shifter and dropped in a 4th gen pro 5.0
the gto shifter falls a bit back
Did you exchange the gto shifter cup bushing with the firebird/camaro one or does the 5.0 shifter use the existing gto shifter cup bushing. This is the piece that requires you to remove a roll pin in order to replace. I guess that is what I was trying to ask.
the dash is actually pretty easy as you go. the wiring gets a bit complicated and the headlight switch has to be worked with . ill be working on the side pillars or a corner piece mold to fill in the gap.
you my friend get a big gold sticker for the day! lmao! nice too see some useful diagrams on the dash wiring finally! im bout to do the swap myself this will save a whole lot time.
one more question do you need the 4th gen tank to make the fuel gauge work properly? if so this would be my best time to do it i just finished up the rear suspension nothings even torqued yet so itd be super easy to drop it back down.

yes im using the 4th gen plastic fuel tank.. 4th gen lines with a few mods. bends, shortened, compressor unions, good clamps and good fuel hoses.
by the looks of it im having some delays..
as soon as i get my ecu its goin to a muffler shop .. hopefully some one can fabricated some decent exhaust work till i get some hawks headers and a fabricated x member such as the drews.

My Drews cross member required me to elongate the bolt hole openings where the bolts go into the subframe as well as elongate the tranny bolt opening. When I got the car the drews was already on there but the tranny mount could not be bolted up without a crapload of stress on the tranny mount.
I also had to clearance the radius opening that the exhaust pipes pass thru. If you have the ability I would suggest trying it yourself (re:ghettocruiser). It looks like Justin's crossmember has a lot more clearance for the exhaust pipes than my drew's did. If you plan on running 3 inch pipes off the LT's into a Y you will want all the room you can get anyway.
All these people doing what I want to do (and doing it well). I'm telling you, working through college is really over-rated.
BTW, you have some more pics of your car? I'm thinking about replacing my ZR1s with C5 Z06s.

hey btw i wasnt using it correct.. it was when i was using the sbc and the gto shifter.. once i tried to put it into gear i realized it.. now i have to look for the fbody cup
i was so confident that i didnt have to mess around with it. because they look so identical.. i want to use the pro 5.0 though
O ok right on. Yea i thought you stumbled onto something when you said it worked fine. I guess there is no free lunch on this one. I haven't swapped mine out yet but when you compare the stock gto and bird shifters side by side you see the difference. Check with six speeds inc or d&d performance for the replacement piece.

updates.. drove the car on open exhaust today. lol
filled up .. gas gauge is functionally working!!
i went back to the gto shifter .. but its too short so ill be lookin for the fbody cup shifter..any other word usage for this? looks like i need some more researching.. cuz i couldnt find them. only articles on it. when i called theses places they didnt know what it was..
thats gto placed which is set further back .. and the fbody to the side a bit shorter. ..
Nice ride, righteous project.I got an 88 IROC I've owned for 12 years.Hope to do an LS swap in the next year, maybe two. Always looking/reading others projects, getting ideas/info.Great job with the dash work.Enjoy!

If you were to slot the mounting holes on the base of the F-Body shifter, it would have worked fine.
I used to run a SLP(HURST) shifter in my GTO. Had to elongate the mounting holes on the base and it worked great.
But the new cup is just as easy and no mods to the shifter base.
updates.. got a y pipe fabricated.. good for now.. other plans in the near future. looks like the power steering fluid was boiling or idk i can hear my pump .. sounds like a ford. lol ill check up on that tmrw.. ride quality is 100x better than sbc and dash makes me feel as i was driving a completely different car. . .. dash fully functional with some abs inop lights on ..and my brake light.. ses.. take care of this later.. as for the hvac control will be added when i find all my ac accesories .blower motor.. hoses.. and wiring data. etc
Do you know what exactly the guys at lt1wiring.com removed from your wiring harness? Did they remove two of the 4 o2 sensors? I have an ls1 that I plan on sticking in my 86 Z28, but I will be keeping all 4 o2s, evap, air pump, 4th gen tank, etc.
its a standalone unit. with vats delete etc. your able to crank over the car with just a few wires.. i have a illustration on their work . they do not remove the 02s.
so far so good. Ive been driving the car. about 300 miles already. car idles good runs really cool. and rides better than before the car feels pretty light
my friends dad was able to fabricate my stock seat sliders onto my passenger vette seat.. il be attempting to do the same to the driver side.
TPI man that car gives me wood like you wouldn't believe. Sorry to be crass, but I've no other way to explain to you how nice I find your car.
Can you link me to some good pics of the dash as it meets the windshield. I'd like to see what it looks like from inside and out if possible. I didn't see any that I'm looking for in the above posts.
Where did you end up finding a shifter cup from? Just curious. The shifter doesn't look too far rearward in the console. You still don't like it though?
