cable harness stand alone....progress update 11/8/11

So I bought a cable harness finally from a 5.3L cable driven truck. No idea on the year but it has red/blue connectors, which should work with the 411 pcm I bought with red/blue connectors as well right? Ended up buying a total of 3 truck intakes to finally get one that I can assemble that will be complete. Now I can sell off the drive by wire harness and intake. Where do I go from here? I don't know what year harness it is to figure out pinouts, it'll be going into a vehicle with no emissions stuff and a th400 trans. What's the next step then?

Looked at old threads on harness stuff and 90% of them all the photobucket pictures were gone. I'm not an efi guy, but willing to learn.

http://lt1swap.com/wiringharness.htm This site should have most of the info you'll need to make a harness.

I'm in the middle of my harness work too. ^This thread has been very helpful. Between that topic and lt1swap.com you should be able to piece together the info you need. It took me a bit of stepping back and looking at what's what, but I think I've got a good handle on it now.

Re: got a cable harness finally

All red/blue truck harnesses are compatible with the 0411 PCM. LT1swap site also goes into detail about DBW to DBC conversions

EFI isnt hard, just double check all of your circuits. Any issues will come back as a trouble code stored in the PCM

Re: got a cable harness finally

i just had a computer crash and lost my stockpile of wiring info, but between lt1swap and ls1tech, i've been able to find just about everything i can remember i lost. if you give yourself a day to dig through and search those two places and have access to excel (to get things organized), you'll find everything you need

excellent, I saw on that LT1 swap site how it just shows which pins to remove right away, any way of seeing the plug side of them to make sure they are things I "want" to remove, or would it be better plugging in everything on the engine then removing items not plugged in following along to that site.

Read the harness threads on this site. You put in the necessary pieces and nothing more

Re: got a cable harness finally

alright printed out a bunch of diagrams off tech and that lt1swap site, going to start on this tomorrow. First thing is cleaning all the oil off the old harness, since it looks like the motor it came off of was quite the leaker. Popping off the drive by wire intake tomorrow and tossing on the cable driven truck intake as soon as I source some new intake gaskets. Doesn't look too bad now that I read up on it for a few nights this past week.

Re: got a cable harness finally

any benefits to buying a factory fuse panel/box off ebay instead of wiring up my own?

I see some of them are under $50 on there, didn't know if that would make the wiring easier or not help me out at all. It's just the box, no connectors on the back, which leads me to believe I'd have to buy the power connectors? or would they already be in the harness?

I copied the direction from here when I did mine up. You can make your own box be as big or small as you'd like.

Re: got a cable harness finally

yes I had printed out that link as well last night, just didn't know if the factory one was a better choice for whatever reason and I could just run a power/ground to it or something. I'll just build up that setup instead then. Also need to see if the factory harness will be long enough to toss the ECU through the firewall into the cab or not.

Re: got a cable harness finally

spent the last 3 hours tonight cutting open the 5.3L harness, cut myself twice with a razor blade and my hands were all black, but finally got it all loose at least. Now I need to start depinning it according to that lt1swap website. Not sure when I'll have to get to that stage.

Also had to purchase a truck MAF because apparently the f-body one I purchased won't fit the OEM intake ducting. Have to toss that up for sale for the $40 I paid for it if anyone is interested.

Also installed a set of racecraft coilovers in the front of my camaro tonight, whew was that an easy easy process. Ended up with 170 pound springs 12" tall, we'll see how the ride height is when my caster camber plates come in sometime after christmas.

Re: got a cable harness finally

A buddy stopped by and gave me a hand pulling all the pins out that won't be needed along with plugging in all the sensor on the motor just to double check we don't pull anything we might need. Wasn't planning on doing a few more hours on it this soon, but regardless made a good dent in it. Just have to remove all those wires now and I'll be set. With running a th400 it seems like a lot more wires were pulled than I initially thought as well.

Re: got a cable harness finally

Pulled out all the loose wires from the pins from that lt1 sheet. Still have several connectors that have wires going to them that I am not sure what they're for. Have to spend more time looking on that sheet I suppose. Here's some update pics of where I'm at presently:

Total time spent now is somewhere around 9-10 hours on it, guess I'm working slow

Re: cable harness stand alone....slow progress

Spent another 2 hours tonight on it, pulled out all non needed connectors now. Starting on marking the various turn on leads off the big black connector and will create the aftermarket fuse panel and relays later this week. Still a large mess of wires, but hopefully I can organize it a little better soon.

Re: cable harness stand alone....slow progress

2 more hours tonight....electrical taped up most of the harness and made it lay flat on the engine. Just need to run ignition hots, hook up grounds and mark a few more wires off the computer plugs and that should do it. Happy with progress.

You can see in the second picture where all the ignition hots are presently facing the passenger side. I plan to run the fuse panel on that side of the vehicle and then "hopefully" put the computer just inside the firewall in the stock location.

A little update, the motor is in and running, put on the cold air intake. Supposed to snow tonight, so finishing it just in time.

computer is going into the glove box, slowly cutting that up to make it fit, no where else is there room under the dash with keeping all the HVAC ducting and dash speakers in place.

Re: cable harness stand alone....progress update 12/29

Hopefully you can answer this quick: are the pinouts on the 0411 pcm the same as an f-body? Like is the TPS wire in the same location on my 0411 pcm as it is on my Trans ams?
