Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
I'm currently in the process of restoring an 89 GTA and having a H/C/I LS1 installed. There are a limited # of videos and pictures to be found here and elsewhere on the internet right now.
If you have one, please post pictures or videos and include details about what mod.s you have. Quarter mile runs are even better.
Mine entered the family in 1990 when my Dad purchased it with 13,000 miles on the clock. It is a gunmetal gray L98 car with dual cats. He sold it for the second, and last, time in 2002 when it had around 179,000 on it.
I have had the fortune (or misfortune) of finding it again. It was in bad shape and among other things will need the floorboards repaired. The good news is that the body was in great shape, other than the nose and spoiler. Both have been repaired or replaced (fiberglass spoiler) and the car is waiting on primer, paint, drivetrain and suspension. The interior is also going to get some attention.
Right now my mechanic (Tracey Scott with Cincy Speed) is preparing to assemble the engine. Mods will be Torquer v2 cam, PRC 5.3 stage 2.5 heads, LS6 or Fast 90 or 92 intake, Hawk's headers, Performabuilt lvl 3 4L60E with an Edge 3,200 stall. I intend to run the stock Borg Warner 9 bolt with 3.27 gear until and unless any problems arise.
She will be rolling on the stock 16 inch wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires.
Tracey expects above 425 rwhp and 390 tq. and ten's through the quarter on drag radials.
So please, tell me about your cars and what to expect.

Perhaps the reason you can't find pictures and info on all the third gen swaps here is because you're not looking in the ltx/lsx section of the engine swap forum
There's actually a LOT of info on our swaps in there. Lots of pictures, diagrams, pin-outs, what not to do's, etc.

Thanks for fixing it. Anyone got 4th gen seats near Cincinnati? I could also use the front-lower air dam.

Thanks TPI Formula, I really like the gunmetal too but not so sure it's staying that color.

Except he cracked my oil pan when he welded it...but he blamed that on the lack of central heat.
Edit: the welding was done in a cold garage in the dead of winter. No fault of his own.

Yes it was ground back down and redone. But the pan was a piece of crap to begin with so it was understandable.
But anyways good luck with your swap and you need to let me know when you get it in for dynoing. There is more then enough wealth of information on these forums if you can read through bs. I didn't know anything about LS motors when I first started....I didn't even know that my 5.7 was the best one I could get till I already had it....beginners luck I guess...

My car/build has been whored out on this site like a $2.00 hooker. Do a search and you'll find at least 7 different threads I made that had something to do with my swap.

Street races will be rare too as I won't put the wear and tear on my stuff just to show up some pimp in a ford probe.
I want maximum street fun and drivability for the $.

When I had the 5.3 with shaved 243's, 224/228 cam, and a fast 90. Through an unlocked 3600 vig. I made 352/344 on a not so forgiving dyno. Ran a 7.94 with a 1.88 60' leaving at like 2000 rpm

Mine is my daily driver, nay, my only driver so I'm not about to pop the clutch at the strip and grenade my fragile 10bolt. I'll stick to autox and track days for now.

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
Your car has been Whored out because it's and I appreciated ya lettin all of us drool over your girl! Reading your threads is what gave me the idea to start this one. You are one of very few who actually has contributed alot for the rest of us.
I hate it when I see that someone in a thread has an LS1 car but details, pictures, video's and mod's are nowhere to be found. What's up with that? Another thing... does anyone on here actually take their cars to the track or are they just keeping their times secret too? On other sites like LS1tech every other member has their rwhp and or times posted. Here... good luck with that!
I wish everyone here that is proud of their rides would post up all the good stuff...mod's, times, pics, vids..
I guess it's just me. I will definitely be keeping ya updated here for anyone that is interested. Hopefully it will help or inspire someone.

Thanks, I really do appreciate that.

I'm working on getting a nice custom Ford 8.8" made by Cam- that should be more than enough to hold up to some 10 second passes, but I don't plan on taking it to the track much anyways. It should be a mid/low 11 sec. car I'd imagine.

With my 6.0, 317 heads milled .030, Trex cam, 4.30 gears and 6 speed, i have hit a 7.5 in the 1/8th mile at 95 MPH. Has more left in it im sure, this was a 1.7 60 foot slipping the clutch.

Quick question... do 6 speeds usually dyno in 4th?

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
No telling, my car picks up pretty hard on the big end, but that does sound right on average, with a better 60 foot though, of course that time would drop. A 1.7 60 foot is with slipping the clutch, pretty soon, my new track outing, hoping nothing breaks, i will be trying again for a 1.5 60 foot, i am trapping 95, and with some additional weight reduction, i am hoping for some more ET and MPH, also from additional tuning with a wide band.
You have to excuse the guys here, there are tons of new guys, mainly kids flooding this site with their cheaply purchased third gens that do tend to get annoying posting questions that have been posted a million times.

I have no desire to be a laziness enabler. There's plenty posted in this sub-forum, no need to feed your thread.

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
Here's what I do know. I work. I don't just work, I own a business and spend 60 hours a week helping those much less fortunate than me by doing my job not just better than is required but better than anybody else in my field in the Cincinnati area. I have seven children with one on the way. When I'm not working, changing a diaper, running to the grocery store or at church, I sneak a peak at these boards. Most nights, after I have tucked all the little ones and my exhausted wife into bed I get some ME time to study up on LS1 Third Gen's.
I also happen to LOVE these cars and think they and LS engines were made for eachother. Naturally my interest will lean towards seeing the two together... Hence the thread I started. Telling me I'm lazy and use the search button seems like quite the lazy reply to my request and this is why. I have searched and searched and find it difficult to find many of them. Plenty of avatars with LS1 listed under engine but not much more in most cases.
So call me lazy or whatever you want but the way I see it I was trying to do what should have already been done in a stickie anyway! A showcase on LS1 Thirdgen's. Pocket has this hot thread (it really is a cool thread too Pocket. Thank You for not being LAZY and sharing with everyone here that is a NEWBIE to what you are doing.) about him engineering a home-spun blower setup and everybody wants to comment.
Consider your chances of finding that with a search though! Personally I don't see me, by chance, typing the word "unsupervised" into the search box.
It seems to me that the problem with a few on here is not that they are tired of newbies asking the same question for the millionth time; it's either that they have forgotten that at one time THEY were the ones who didn't know something, they were the ones who had a desire to look at a car other than their own, and they maybe used to answer questions repeatedly just to help someone else out. Not for some kind of title, reward or respect, but because they were considerate.
If you don't want to go thru the 'trouble' of helping to feed this thread DON'T.
Considering this site's name and the undeniable wisdom that comes with putting an LS into one, you should love having a show-off thread for the combo. Call me crazy.

LOL, agreed. I forgot to mention that I became a grandpa 1 year ago on the sixth of this month It's no wonder I don't get more done on the GTA! My boy helped me swap the hood hinges, put the hood back on and adjust the front fenders last weekend, though. She's real straight now with no goofy gaps. Can't wait to finish sanding the nose, replace the door hinges and then primer. It's killin me to wait on putting the rear hatch and spoiler back on until it's all painted seperately. Will post pics later. Not much to see just yet.
I wonder how many people on here understand how important a project like this becomes when doing it for your Dad, to restore for and to him his one true love, at least when it comes to cars. I remember watching his heart break both times he had to sell her in the past. He never had a car before or since that came close to his GTA.
Dad had polio as a kid and isn't as able to work on cars as most of us are, and he used to spend four hours every weekend cleaning and waxing it. Two hours alone just on the wheels. Then he would take it to the strip and race it in trophy class. They bagged alot of trophies together but never faster than a 14.34@95 mph.
I remember finally beating him (time-wise, I never could beat him on a dial-in) with my trick-flow headed, 355/700r4 stock stall (went mid 13's) after putting the heads on, and how graciously he handled it. He was almost as proud of my accomplishment as I'm going to be to present his be-love GTA back to him in SLIGHTLY faster than 14's form.
I hope y'all understand if I'm passionate about it.

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
read the stickies and build one then, i don't see the point of picture collecting...???
IF you start the swap and have questions, that aren't clearly in the stickies people will help. Hell if you want to put a big ol' carb up top, I'd answer questions....but just berating people asking for pics....pointless.
I'm doing a 5.3L swap and have posted pics in that thread with an efi harness, and no one comments it, maybe you can check that out, who knows. Some guys read magazines all day, others get out there and build what they read about. If you want to internet bench race then hop on tech and look at all those pointless threads as well. Around here we prefer to have threads discussing something other than creating a photo album

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
Me n Dad ten years ago followed by Dad in his car and then Dad leaving the line at some track in Indiana, I think.
He's 60 now and the polio has taken it's toll. Between post-polio syndrome and spending 20+years crawling under houses for a living (with only one arm) to support his wife and 7 children, he doesn't have many years or passes left in him.
That is how I have arrived at my sense of urgency and current state of "laziness".
Thanks for the help.

Talk about a lack of reading comprehension.

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
By seeing it I got some ideas...
one... that color of blue looks great on your car at night but I don't want it on the GTA.
two.. I really like the stance of your car but don't think it would be the perfect blend of track performance and road handling for mine. So while I would be interested in knowing what suspension mods you have that help you go fast in a straight line, I would also like to know what should be changed to maintain most of the grip going straight without losing it in the curves.
Three..I would under no circumstances put a cowl on the GTA. Looks ok on your car though, just not exactly a sleeper look and kinda 80'ish for me.
Four..expendable is an interesting name.

I didn't realize that they used fourth for sticks though. It seems that you couldn't use 3rd with an auto. What would keep the trans from downshifting?
Sorry for the redundant newbie questions. I guess I should figure out what keywords to do a search on for that one. Wish me luck!

Yes, thank you. I actually did know that. Finally something I knew! I do appreciate your trying to help though.

Most noisy newbies live a cycle similar to this:
1.) "Woo Hoo I'm a newb post everything in my thread!!1!"
2.) "You can't tell me to use the search button!!1!"
3.) Silence...

In your first post, your (apparent) stated purpose is:
When you don't seem to get what you want, you say:
I'm not sure how we're going to be able to tell you what works for you.
Good thing you weren't asking for a picture collection. The LS1 sticky has a link to a thread where members have posted pics of their swap.
As has been noted, if you have specific questions, we're more than willing to give a shot at an answer.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what you're trying to accomplish. From all appearances, it's to get all LS1 swappers to respond in your thread.

Re: Got an LS1 Third Gen? Come on in!
It was to get LS1 swappers to share their experiences, cars and advice. It was apparently a bad idea or at least presented in the wrong place or in the wrong way. Maybe all three.
