Re: lt1 or old school 383 swap (or LS?)

I am finding a lot of lq4 setups with computer, harness and all bolt on accessories starting at $1300. I am going to make some calls tomorrow to my local salvage yards and see what kind of price I can get from them.

Re: lt1 or old school 383 swap (or LS?)

Ok I found a 2004 6.0 out of a box truck complete with transmission, all accessories, ecm and harness for $1500. If this sounds like a good deal let me know. He does not know what the transmission is except that it is an automatic. Hope you guys can let me know soon. I am hoping to call him back this evening and tell him to pull it.

Re: lt1 or old school 383 swap (or LS?)

That trans should be a 4l80, surely tougher than the 4l60. I have been told the vans were still cable throttle that year, I would think box and would be the same as a van in that respect? Not sure if its difficult to go to throttle cable with a dbw ECM and harness or not if it is a dbw setup. Not sure how good of a deal that is, doesn't sound terribly expensive if the miles are decent.

I just found a place near me that does the 6.0 swaps. He said he can do everything including parts, labor including intake and cam swap with headers for around $6000. He would be using a motor and trans will less than 85,000 miles. Does that sound fair?

Buy it

Can sell the 4L80E for $6-700 if you're not using it. Is a VERY tough trans if the weight doesnt bother you

Sounds too good to be true. Check out other swaps they have done and proceed with caution. Id suggest asking specifically if they've done any 82-92 Fbodys. Swapping a 3rd gen is ALOT different than a classic with a massive engine bay

Re: lt1 or old school 383 swap (or LS?)

I'm I'm the process of doing a carbed LQ9 project in my IROC. I'm just porting and polishing the heads, cam, pistons, and rods. and plan on spraying it on a decent sized shot. These blocks are ridiculously strong, LQ9 or LQ4. I was just never a fan of the LT1 in my opinion. I'm more on the old school stuff. For as cheap as you can find these 6.0s, that would be the way to go. Or even check on the 5.3s at a junkyard or something. My friend has a stock bottom end 5.3 in an s10 that goes 10.02 on a 200 shot. These new motors are tough, and the 5.3s are a dime a dozen.

Re: lt1 or old school 383 swap (or LS?)

Well I went with an LS1 setup and t-56. Drivetrain is out of the car and hopefully this coming week the engine and tranny will be bolted up. I went with the LS1 because it had just been rebuilt less than 4000 mile ago. Already has a nice cam in it. I plan on replacing intake ,throttle body and possibly heads. I hope to have some pics up soon.

Youll have fun with it. Would not go out of my way to do a swap with an LT1 ever. Just not worth it over the Gen1

Compared to a Gen I roller 350, an LT1 isnt really much different, but you get a great EFI system with tons of potential included, plus very good stock heads capable of 400hp with that same intake. Beyond that level, where you need aftermarket heads, it's not worth it. Gen III+ is the way to go.

There's not a single effective EFI system available for the Gen I sbc that is as good as the LT1 intake. TPI and its derivatives will always be handicapped. The Stealth Ram has QC issues and is probably the least awful of the bunch, the Miniram is stupid expensive and has fuel distribution problems, a single plane EFI setup has hood clearance issues and costs a small fortune, and the superram has fuel distribution problems and it's out of production. The Pro Flo XT apparently has awful, small ports. Not much potential there.

The LT1 intake has a similar issue to miniram, but GM was aware of it and programmed in the injector offset to compensate, so it's already been addressed. Hard to beat a setup that was good enough for OEM and is capable of producing 400+ hp. GM already did all the development work for you so that you're not some aftermarket company's beta tester.

Out of them all, I'd choose the stealth Ram, but a stealth ram setup can get REAL expensive in a hurry if you dont have a stock TPI car to start with. Even if you do have all that, I would imagine a running LT1 pullout with computer is cheaper than a steatlh ram intake + fuel rails.

The LT1 isnt the best engine around, and I used to hate on it too, but at the prices they sell for they definitely have their place unless you're completely happy with running a carbureted or TPI sbc.

Still no comparison to an LS1. The weight savings and power are a hell of a one-two punch. Hard to beat.
