*****'s '87 Z28 Log
Updated Aug 9, 2012!!!!
Working towards a full black interior, 350 crate engine
_______________________________________________________________
So I figured I'd start a log to show everyone my car's progression.
First off, a little information about myself. I'm 17, and I'll be 18 in march. I've been driving a family car since I got my license. My dad had a nice 86 iroc when he was younger but he sold it years ago.
This is my first car, and I'm really excited to start working on such a big project. Just got it this week. I don't plan on doing anything too extreme, as this will be my daily driver.
It's an 87 z28. 305, 5 speed, with red interior. It's all original, including paint, and is still under 100k miles.
Currently looking to buy some iroc wheels for it, get the ground effects painted black, build a sub box, and maybe get a new interior.
Will update as needed

Very Nice! I really like the two-tone 85-87 Z28s...You don't see too many of them around. When I was your age I didn't like the two-tone colors and decided to paint my Z28 one solid color with black racing stripes. The next time I paint my 86 Z28 (Hopefully late this year), I will be going back to the originally two-tone colors.
I just noticed that you said you wanted throw a set of iroc wheels on your car. If I were you, I would buy them from a place that refinishes wheels. You won't have to deal with curb rash, peeling clear coat, faded paint, etc. www.wheelcollision.com sells them painted and with the machined finish...something you can't do at home in your garage.

Haha, you and me both. I used to drive a family car, but now I don't. Nice Camaro man. Looks nice and really well taken care of. I'm looking to do red interior in the future, for one of my projects.

dang *****,your car reminds me soooo much of my old 87 IROC!
It also was black/red. It had the 16"Iroc wheels, black gfx,and of course the Iroc striping but pretty much the same otherwise. Looks nice, hope you're enjoying it.
One thing I could never figure out on my old car was the fact that it had the red interior and carpeted int. panels but,had the silver decal set?Why not red?

Re: *****'s '87 Z28 Log
i'm trying to think out my audio setup currently.
I'd like to run a single 12" JL w7 sub, but im not sure on an amp. I'm not looking to spend too much though. Hopefully doing something like Al Hasse
seen here: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...amp-build.html
Any suggestions?

TPI or carb?
Like the IROC wheel idea....but consider leaving the silver GFX......if you paint the GFX body colour, it will just be another IROC

Brands to look at: Caedance [sp], Pioneer, Kicker, Kenwood. Rockford. Cerwin Vega. I'm sure I'm missing more but its a good start, don;t buy cheap garbage.
Goodluck with your project!!

as for the color, i have some silver paint that was mixed to match the original color of these z28's. im thinking about sanding down the ground effects and repainting them when i have a chance

my cam is horrible and i was having trouble getting a picture of the interior. not much to see anyways. new tires as well
although, i did install my headunit today. everythings working great i just need to get a new bezel because it doesnt fit snug at all. i know a few companies have them but is one better than another?

Got to work on the car today. Had it in to the shop where I helped put 4 new sets of brake pads on, 2 new rear shocks, and bled out all lines and replaced fluids.
I also got my exhaust welded back onto the harness so it looks good now

Re: *****'s '87 Z28 Log
i agree with others...leave the two tone color scheme. Not many of these around. I made the choice to keep the two tone on my 86 Z and it turned out great. If painted, you will need to invest in a complete stripe kit for the lower panels, but worth the money.

Re: *****'s '87 Z28 Log
Wow so I havent been around here in a while. I've been busy with school and I can not take the maro that far yet, so I've been using a tC.
The car was just given a full carb rebuild, which has dealt with the odd RPM problem. The car would constantly be running at around 2500rpm unless you tapped the gas, but it got to the point where it just always idled this high. The screws, etc in the carb were so worn they couldnt even hold their setting.
Overall this means the car should be good to go internally, with the carb rebuild, new wires, fluids.
Also since I last posted I have added edelbrock ceramic coated headers, and flowmaster cat-back dual exhaust.

Re: *****'s '87 Z28 Log
The two tone probably wont stay too long haha...
Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm pretty satisfied with what i'm working with mechanically now, its running good and can be used daily when I'm home. In the future i'd like to upgrade to a ls1 and t56 but thats a while in the future.
Not sure what I'll do next, I want some new wheels and was thinking 18's in the back, 17's in the front. The vette c6 wheels have reallly grown on me, and in chrome they'd look great with color I want to paint the car -Gunmetal. Its either chrome or black, because I was also thinking about blacking out the taillights and getting the black tinted covers for front lights. Eventually I'll tint the windows.
My question is, Is it worth converting to the new wheels? If I did this I'd need to get the brake setup too which is a good bit to drop right now. With the engine and what I'm running is this brake setup needed right now? Or should I start working on the interior/exterior look of the car?
This is getting to be a long post, but I'm planning on an all black interior. This color combo really strikes me as a sleek combo. The current interior is ok, a few cig burns from previous owner, and the usual color fading on the rear seat tops. Also the usual rip right down the seat side of the drivers seat.

Re: *****'s '87 Z28 Log
FINALLY getting serious about this car. Going to keep updated as I can put more money into it
Did a lot of work today. Pulled the entire interior except headliner. Going to be dyeing my plastics black using Hawks method shortly, picking up a headliner/sail panel/ visor kit from Hawksthirdgen, and a new black carpet.
Luckily the metal in the car is in great shape for a 25 year old car. NO rust through the panels, and very minimal bubbling from wet feet. So just surface rust

Re: *****'s '87 Z28 Log
Big update, past couple weeks I've gotten my new carpet from 1A, a really nice set of black interior plastics and door panels, and got all my EZcool matting installed! Next up is some seats or covers and a headliner, then I'm done with the interior for the foreseeable future.
I did do ezcool up the sides and around the speakers as well.
