My first Car

Thought i'd take a moment and share my 1991 camaro rs with you all. I'm 16 and i found it on craigslist and paid 600 cash for it. (These are the pictures that were attached with it.) The body is straight, missing a passenger mirror and some dents. Being as i'm not mechanically knowledgeable in any way a very good friend of mine is cutting me a sweet deal, hes already replaced the starter, the fuel pump, and right now he's replacing the heater core and all of the injectors all for about 700$. (nicest guy in the world btw) As far as the interior its probably a 3/10 but i have been avidly reading this site and it has given me soo many ideas and so much information, i plan to get some 4th gen seats, and maybe see if i can find a stock spoiler, and i was looking to get a new hood, and possibly new fenders. Please feel free to post what you think about my ideas or my car. Will upload more pics when it gets running. Thanks!

Looks like an awesome deal for the price! How is the car rust wise? Man I am wishing I run into that kind of luck when I go ahead and purchase my 2nd 3rd gen.

Keep us updated on any things you add!

Re: My first Car

very nice. you started off way better in the body than i did but my interior is 9/10 motor to. spoiler? you have the stock spoiler that came with that car. it you are talking about a Z28 spoiler...I recommend being able to back up running that spoiler before you get it. these cars are alittle easy to work on imo. ive replaced injecters, starter, alternater, and 7 or 8 trans mounts... the more you wrench the more you will learn. I recommend taking auto tech at your high school if you have it to

Re: My first Car

seriously as old as these cars are it will help if you can work on them yourself with me saying that don't be discouraged you got an awesome car there. WhenI was in high school I just about bought 2 different 3rd gen camaros but things didn't work out for me 10 years later I still have a little resentment there as I am determined to get one now. Anyway have fun with your car (I know you will) and picking up girls will be a little easier now

Re: My first Car

I'm 17, and I am picky when it came to getting my first. I got this as a Christmas present this year. She's a 1984 Camaro, basic, no special trim styles. V6 auto and 3.23 10 bolt rearend. I am fixing it myself, and by the time i'm 30, it will hope to have a 427 HO SBC racing engine with supercharger. ($40K-$60K total). Heres what she looks like at the moment: oh, and also paid $450 for it

Re: My first Car

Haha since we are going on and on about Younguns and their camaros I may as well chip in.
Saved my money up from 13 to 15, got 3500 saved up. When I first got my permit, I bought a 1991 Camaro RS with a rebuilt 350 (20k miles). It did not run. 6/10 body, 9.5/10 interior. Paid 1500 for it. Took it home did research on codes and turned out that the MAP sensor was not plugged into the carb. Plugged it in and wahlah, a beautiful running car for 1500 bucks. I got lucky .

I'm 17 now (turning 18 in feb ), and still have both cars. Unfortunately I wrecked the blue one, but I am slowly repairing it.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...pens-when.html

But anyway, life goes forward right? I am about to go update that wrecked thread with progress pictures right now.

I am glad to see that all of us youth have not turned into ricing civic kids that think they are the **** with their pants around their ankles.

Wow this thread really took off.
Great cars guys!
An Update on mine.
Turns out that it needed a new sensor and a transmisson clamp or something.
Gonna run me about 200 but then i'll have it all fixed mechanically.
Took some of your guys advice, changed my own oil for the first time along with some other work took about two days, it was awesome! Restored a mirror i got off ebay for 12 bucks, and got a radio for it :P. Its really coming together will get new pics when its all installed.Happy Holidays and post more sexy Camaros bought by 15-18 year olds!

Re: My first Car

I love reading these stories. I'm 16 and jsut got my first job not too long ago. It's a pretty good paying job (a couple hundred every weekend) I only work weekends and it varies too.

Anyway, not that's xmas is over i can start saving up for drivers-ed and then for my first camaro. I have been looking around for sooo long. Not much luck finding anything cheap enough. I want a project, not a perfect car. I go to a technical school so if I have problem I can ask friends in the automotive shop. I take electricity.

Anyway guys great stories!

to the OP. That would be my dream car right there. have fun with it!

Re: My first Car

Lucky. i can't find a job anywhere, all the automotive quick service shops have an 18 yr old policy. I also have a auto tech class at my school, actually advanced lvl 3, and taking a even higher lvl next semester where i'll be helping the tech 1 kids with learning. we do electrical and brakes. major overhaul was the whole class took out a wiring harness (all of it) out of a 96 taurus, its bare bones now, the instructor want to turn it into a drag car. we're also helping him with his 52 coupe (sadly he's a Ford guy, but still likes em although thats pretty much 98.7% of the cars comming into our tech garage. we work on real cars and fill out real work orders. its fun. i have it 1st and 2nd per. (3hrs)

Re: My first Car

i remeber when i got my driver's licence, i failed it at first cause i was doing 45 in a 25, so she flunked me, since then i've done better. more like 115 in a 65 on the interstate, thats how fast a hyndai suv will go, slow foreign crap. should've filled it up with rice grains so it would go faster. lol.

I think i'm getting to be the same way.
I'm saving up the money for a parts car as we speak.
Maybe we'll meet up at Camaroholics Anonomous.

Anyways ***UPDATE***

My baby is out of the shop, where i live there is 6in or so of snow, man without snow tires its rough.
My distributor (i think it is) is still timed fast, and there needs to be another tune up done to get the old girl running like a top.

As far as cosmetically, i put it a passenger side mirror today and it really pulled the car together.(made her look much more puuurrrty)
Ordered a dashpad cover off ebay for like 18 bucks so i'm anxious to see what it'll be like (i'll write a review.)

I'm searching JY's for a Z28 spolier for it, (not the biggest fan of the Rs spoiler)

Glad to see all those nice Camaros keep 'em coming!

Re: My first Car

My first car was 95 civic but I couldnt stand it and within a week of owning it I sold it. Then i got my 90 firebird had a 305 156k original for 300 nothing worked but a week of tinkering changing fuses and such and had it running. But I recently sold it after it got a cracked head and my mom gave me her camaro that she bought new in 88 on terms that i never sell it and keep it in the family. Im going to be restoring it myself im 17 ill be 18 this april but i have learned quite about about the mechanics of cars thanks to my old firebird and this great forum

this was technically my first car

This is my camaro engine only has 25k original miles replaced by gm after leaving the oil drain plug out after an oil change. The body only has 64k but it was stolen 4 times back in New Jersey and its been sitting for 8 years so it looks rough. It is a v6 but I just really want to bring it back to life sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.

Re: My first Car

great cars guys, I'm glad yall didn't turn into ricers.
I'm 16 and recently got a 92 RS v6 with 216 k miles on it. but the 2 previous owners were a mechanic and a body shop owner(my uncle)
so it is in perfect condition the interior is probably a 6/10...
better pics coming soon.

ohh and BTW don't put a z28 spoiler on it... I used to want a z28 spoiler and a 5" cowl on my v6 RS, but somebody explained it to me like this
"if you do that you are writing big dog checks that your puppy dog *** can't cash" you gotta be able to back up that spoiler with horsepower.
JMO not trying to offend you.
