my 87 iroc build.

ok so here is the story, I got this 87 iroc from a buddy of mine. He was gunna junk it but i told him if your ever goin to get rid of it let me know so he did and i bought it asap not knowing what the deal was. It had a broken drivers window, interior was disgusting(animals living in it), about 4 inches of water in it, i got it with no hood but had one. Motor was disasembled, tpi harness still in it when the kid put a carb setup on it. The car was destroyed basically. Since then i got the 305(early 80s motor) running good. Still need other **** to get it running perfect but runs. I cleaned the interior and reinstalled it. I put another side window in the car, i also put in a 3:73 posi rear from a camaro parts car, cowl hood, door panels and misc missing interior parts. I still gotta blead the brakes, swap intakes, get carb adjusted, put in the correct radiator, 1inch intake spacer, the right air cleaner, valve cover gaskets, header gaskets, altenator, passenger door panel, also a 2500 converter is going in. I also welded the axle tubes myself, welder got messed up so welds aint perfect.
here is some pics.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

Looks like a good place to start. I've got basically the same exact car except blue with about equal parts sun damage. If you've got the time could you take one picture for me, right where the fan harness plugs into the chassis harness (next to the battery) I need to see the chassis side wiring. This would be greatly appreciated and good luck on your build.

yeah your right man.

As far as paint not yet, i got this car on more of a friend thing and this deal came out of no where cause i was going to purchase an 84gt350 mustang but this set me back still but im still in the process of purchasing that also.

I just wanna get it running and driving this year and then when winter comes if i still have it, sand it down myself and prime it myslef then have my uncle paint it. I wanna kep the same color but add a twist to it lets say. Like keep the dark red but add more of of a brighter dark red if that makes sense. Like dark red but more of a shine.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

wow seems like all these cars get pretty hacked up at some point, mine had 4 relays and still runs non stop. As far as paint goes you might want to consider changing the iroc and the wheel inlays to gold, i love that combo and am thinking of doing mine blue with the gold decals and rims.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

Yeah don't worry about the lack of replies, the only way people usually look at new threads is when they show up in the main board.

Anywho I like the car, its a really nice place to start. You might check the floor pans for some rust.

I also really like the 3 gauge inlay you made, I might have to see about making something like that or maybe buy one from you, I just would still like to be able to put my stereo there lol.

And I like the stock rims that are on it, those are my favorite Iroc rims but I just can't find any around here.
But good luck on the build, I'll be watching.

I stripped the whole interior and no rust anywhere on the floor boards at all, which i was very surprised.

As far as the gauges go, i took a piece of sheetmetal, matched it to the size of the mounting holes for the stereo, drilled it out, i just made it fit nice. Now i just gotta wait for a swap meet and get autometer gauges.

Theres bout 4inches of snow outside right now and alot more coming down really hard so this snow is gunna kill me now, but its in a carport all safe.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

thanks man. Im on my *** right now cause this snow is killing me. My car is packed away and cant do **** at all. Hopefully this weekend i can get some more updates and progress on her, but deff next week there will be more progress. I have to pull the motor, see if my buddy has the correct converter, get the converter, clean the engine bay, paint some stuff in the engine bay, make some custom panels for the fire wall and straighten out all the wiring then put her back together and register it.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

Here is a pic of the wheels im using, these are coming off my dads camaro thats pictured and goin on my car. i cant wait. Reason for them coming off his car is that he is putting the stock 5 spoke ss wheels on and the car is going into a showroom to be put up forsale and wants it to have the stock look.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

Here is a pic of the motor i put together, well top end wise and cam wise. Its all stock besides edelbrock intake and holley carb. Everything was pinted so it would look nice. It is a gm performanceparts crate engine, the base model which is 290hp and 326ftlbs of torque so hopefully she will boogy a little with the 3:73s. More mods for the motor will come once i get more money and make sure she is running good.

thanks man.

The a/c box was a pain in the ***. I just took a crow bar and ripped it out, i cut the bolts and that was it. It was already cracked and broken the box and couldnt be fixed so i tore it apart.

New motor is in car, engine bay painted but needs to be ttouched up, my starter has to be trimmed and will be running tomorow hopefully with no knocks. lol

Got the motor in, cant get it started but i will tomorow. Having some fuel problems and some other problems but all is good. I have to touch up the engine bay with paint and after it runs get a few more things hooked up and start the body work.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

Man those wheels are amazing. Excuse my noobness but what are they called? Where can they be purchased? If priced right they might replaced my curb scrapped wagon wheels.

Nice project as well, keep us updated.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

UPDATE: the motor and trans is out. The start of the 5 speed conversion starts tomorow. Another motor is coming this weekend or this week. I gotta redoe the exhaust, well i have headers, but one side the guy cut the 3 bolt flange off(ghetto) and so i gotta weld a new flange on and make some y pipe adjustments for the headers.

Those wheels look great. They will look even better when you get some fresh paint on the car. Did you mention what color you will go with?

Re: my 87 iroc build.

BIG UPDATE: I got the other 350 in the car, I also added a 1inch intake spacer and a holley fuel pump. I got the 5 speed in the car, the pedals, aluminum driveshaft, the zbar has to be hooked up and then its time to drive it basically. I have to make custom brackets for the radiator and the fans and also get a starter, i put it all togehter and wouldnt strat cause of bad starter, so hopefully by this weekedn she will be back all together and the interior will be good again. pics to come

Re: my 87 iroc build.

Thats a pretty nice motor, can I ask why you used the 1" spacer for the carb?

thanks man. I talked to a few engine builders and they said the best is to use is a 1/2 inch spacer but i had a 1inch laying around and they said thats fine and also to raise the carb so that my air cleaner will be in the cowl area of the hood and let more fresh air into the air cleaner.

Re: my 87 iroc build.

ok so its running and moving barely. Something is wrong with the zbar setup, car snaps in first gear, ill figure it ou tthough. But she startts right up, doesnt smoke or anything. Its so nice that its amost done but my new edition is the 91 rs 305 auto in theback ground. It has edelbrock headers n ypipe, so im going to put that on my car and switch exhaust, i may keep it or sell it, i dont know yet.
