Re: 1991 Firebird Project

the number in the photo was 18800 and it's only like $2 on Rock auto, I just wondered if you already had experience installing it.

I'll probably put one in the cart with my next order if it ships from the location of another part. that car is still in progress so if I wait to get it won't matter.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

I'm day dreaming about someday installing it. LOL The water pump got my attention, as long as I was putting in the order I figured I'd get a few more things on my wishlist. It'll probably be awhile before I get around to trying it. But I learned about it right here on the forum, so someone said it fits. All I can do is hold it up to a TPI setup on the shelf and say 'yep, the end comes about to where the stubby hose would stick out the side of the throttlebody". It looks to me like it should work better than I thought it would.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

The rest of the order came in today. I ordered the heater core, and related hoses awhile back. So this order pretty much takes care of all the rubber hoses and cooling system parts aside from a radiator, which I should be able to get locally to avoid shipping and potential damage. Also picked up the ever popular and obscure 170* GM thermostat.

1991 Firebird Project-yhnk2tr.jpg

Which brings me to another topic close to my heart. This order came from three warehouses, and the practical jokers at @RockAuto had the audacity to only send two Collector's Series fridge magnets. Do you think this is a game, Rock Auto? They know as well as I do that he who dies with the most Rock Auto magnets wins. And while I'm sure my modest collection pales in comparison to some that are surely out there, it undermines my mission when I'm shorted. Perhaps the worst part is not that they only sent two magnets, but that one of the magnets is a display of Joe-Bob's Big Farmin' Truck. While I suppose I can get behind the idea of a dedicated farmer, slaving away to keep the old wreck going, I'm not sure how I feel about displaying a very visibly rusty Farm Truck with the rest of the range of daily drivers to classics, muscle cars, and show cars currently displayed on my garage fridge. I guess I just thought the criteria for appearing on a fridge magnet was high enough that a rusty farm truck wouldn't make the cut.

1991 Firebird Project-qvaxthf.jpg

I figure there are probably little kids out there that collect these things out of their father's packages, and trade them around like baseball cards, or Pokemon. I know it sounds far fetched, but do you remember beanie babies and pogs? Pogs were cardboard discs the size of a half dollar with pictures of ALF on them, and kids collected those. Anyway, I bet there are kids out there that would be thrilled, and likely baffled by my disgust, at receiving a magnet with a picture of a big rusty farm truck. They would probably see this, and say something like - "WOW!!! He got a mint condition, BIG RUSTY RHONDA - The Manure Hauler!!!" or maybe just "Lucky!!!". Meanwhile I'm judging the most collectible magnet, rare because it will usually go right in the trash can, as a disgrace to my Turbo Pea Soup colored 1974 Whirlpool.

1991 Firebird Project-z2jy88s.jpg

Of course, I understand that the magnets are a bonus, and not the reason to order from Rock Auto. The above is posted with tongue firmly in cheek. In other words, I'm just kidding and hope someone has a laugh at the absurdity of adults collecting fridge magnets. Rock Auto deserves extra credit for great prices, perpetual 5% off coupon codes, the fridge magnets, and great service.

Edit - had to add an overall up-to-date photo of the fridge... And with a single post I potentially instigate a war with the Farm Truckin' Forum.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

You can have all my magnets from Rock if you want, lol. I'm about to start throwing them away. Some are so old the picture is peeling off.
I remember pogs. Always wanted some, but never got them until someone gave me an OLD stack of milk bottle tops. I think I still have those too

Why did you get the hose in the loop?

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

You mean the horse shoe hose - intake to throttlebody? Plan B, or to supplement my supply of spares. I still run the stock routing on my other cars. Never hurts to have a spare.

Yeah, I meant the horseshoe. Spares make sense, couldn't figure out why you would want it if you were doing the bypass, lol

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

It remains to be seen if the project car will have the full coolant passage or just the IAC housing on the TB. I've got a couple of stock tbs in the pile and a 52mm Holley, so it could go either way. I'm leaning toward the bypass, but we shall see.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

Got a wild hair the other day and strapped on the goggles, hat, and respirator. Got the top half of the differential housing blasted. I got interrupted by the UPS man and had to take off the PPE gear, when I finished checking out the latest goodies I just wanted to clean up the mess. It doesn't look like much but most of the heavy rust has been stripped away.

1991 Firebird Project-za3it7l.jpg

I need to plug off the vent assembly so I can flip it over and blast the bottom side. I usually keep a variety of plastic and rubber plugs and caps around, to do that kind of thing, but somehow I don't have anything that fits tight enough to keep the vent from leaking. I drained most of the gear oil awhile back, but there's enough in there to drip when it's inverted. There's probably a solution involving duct tape in the future unless I find a better idea googling how to remove the vent.

I mentioned the UPS guy brought goodies...

1991 Firebird Project-bjduokj.jpg

One more part for the 80's montage where the car goes back together in 2027. I realize that the cross-flow muffler isn't popular anymore, but the goal is a somewhat stock style build in the style of 20 years ago, so it fits. That and I've already got the stock style tail pipes set aside.

1991 Firebird Project-z07hnie.jpg

That ought to do. The muffler is the welded Ultraflow, it's a stainless cased, straight thru design with synthetic packing for good flow and noise reduction. 3" in, dual 2.5" out. Ought to do just fine, if I ever get to the point where I'm ready for it.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

I'm not sure, but I expect it'll be like most other packed "turbo" mufflers. It'll probably start out relatively quiet at idle and louder at WOT, with more volume over time as the packing breaks down. But I don't know, the Edelbrock RPM on the Iroc has been on there since about 1998 and still sounds pretty quiet. LOL I picked up a pair of them, the other theoretically will go on the Formula at some point. So I might theoretically know sometime before 2027.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

I like how the Edelbrock catbacks for our cars had the stock tail pipes but bigger. I really wanted to buy one but time got away from me and missed that boat. Dynomax is a good quality piece as well. So many catbacks I wanted try out back in the day..

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

It's just too bad Walker/Dynomax is so hung up on the 2.5" inlet. I get that it makes the pipes compatible with the stock parts, but no one is trying to use a stock muffler from 1997 anymore. If they stepped up their thirdgen catback kits to use a 3" intermediate pipe, they'd actually sell. But now they don't even sell a 4th gen 3" setup with a crossflow muffler.

The Edelbrock kit was OK. It had some fitment issues out of the box. The sound is good, quality is good, but it doesn't fit the car as well as it should. Specifically the tail pipes don't exit where they should, because they didn't bother to space them properly. But at least it's got that lifetime warranty

It's supposed to be a cold climate thing, according to legend. I've bypassed it on a couple cars, including my 24-7-365 daily driver 3.1L Firebird in South Dakota. If it didn't ice up at -17*, I kinda doubt it's going to ice up.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

I have have had the throttle stick on my car when I drove it all the time. It happened coming off the interstate then settling into a steady 60mph cruise. Temp was barely freezing out but it did frost the T-body for a sec. Just stuck it till I tapped the throttle to release it. Never ever did it again. So 1 time in 250k miles my car did it. Well, 200k miles from when i bypassed it.

Hey Drew. The temps are rising, long sunny days, etc. Any chance we see some new progress on this project?

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

I wouldn't hold my breath. The current hang-up, is a lack of help. Things like lifting a hatch or a hood take an extra set of hands. Social distancing, old age, and "new *****" has pretty much decimated the list of people I'd turn to for help. I probably need to hire someone to finish the body and paint so I can focus on reassembling the rest, but there's no easy way to move the car and I don't have much free time to find a shop or work out the details. So I don't know when, or even if, I'll get back to it.

Markings on the box are an oddball brand, but it's a CARDONE 58320 waterpump. If I were looking for another one I'd look on Ebay. Small corner auto parts stores go out of business all the time, and the parts end up at flea markets, swap meets, and auctions. Ebay is as logical a place to look as any. Looks like there are a lot of them (30+) available on there.
Edit: Rock Auto has them available at the regular price. Pic is correct.
Thanks Drew for the info. Rockauto has them on clearance for 10.05 and with shipping it only cost me 20 dollars. Pretty good deal to get a water pump with the right casting.

Re: 1991 Firebird Project

I suppose I should update or close out the thread... I lost my shop in July on very short notice, and didn't have anywhere to move the car. A tiny issue with the title made it unlikely I'd be able to get the car titled in Kansas without enduring a major headache. I ended up telling a coworker to haul it away as scrap, he couldn't justify it going to waste, so it's supposedly tucked away in a barn somewhere until I have a place I can work on it. Realistically, I don't expect the car to ever come back. The parts are all tucked away in storage, so it's possible the project could be resumed at a later date when I have room and time to work on it, or with a different donor, but I don't see much light at the end of that tunnel.
