1991 Trans Am convertible project for my Dad
So we picked up a 91 Trans Am convertible a while back for a fun car for my 79 year old dad and my 75 year old mom to play around with. Here's a pic of the car when we got it...
So since we got it, we ordered a brand new top, new seat covers, new carpet, installed a new set of injectors and intake gaskets, and new rear sway bar links and bushings. We also had the wheel lips polished and I repainted the gold in the centers. Heres a few pics along the way.....

And got it in the body shop after work tonight and started tearing it down. I gutted the interior

And gonna get jamming very soon on bodywork and new paint job. I also have new front ground effects, too. I'm hoping to have it all done and put back together within a month or so.

Very nice! Who supplied the top and upholstery? Leather seats, duplicate of OE upholstery or shop stitched? ?

Just sold my green GTA but still have a forever soft spot for that colour combination. That interior looks awesome though, and in combination with the new paint and rims, that will be a sharp looking car! See it's still a victim of the driver side cup holder genocide though eh

Re: 1991 Trans Am convertible project for my Dad
The top is a Haartz vinyl top from convertibletopguys.com and the upholstery kit is the perforated Hampton Vinyl kit from classic industries. I can't say enough good about the upholstery.....it is super awesome. It has all the padding on the back side, too, like OEM. The vinyl is very soft, has a leather feel, and should be way more durable than the factory leather. It does not feel like boat seat vinyl at all....which was what scared me when ordering it. I am super happy with it!

I was super happy that the back side of the rear seat back was carpeted just like oem, too! For the quality of the covers, I was actually surprised at how cheap they were!

Im pretty sure the rocker ground effects were NEVER meant to be removed from the convertibles. What a major pain in the butt!

Re: 1991 Trans Am convertible project for my Dad
Well.....the way it sounds, this project may have turned into a car for my daughter that just got her driver's license. My dad has mentioned several times to her that we could just fix this thing up for her. She's in love with this car and has actually driven it around town quite a bit with the top down. So now she's all anxious to get it done, too!

Your daughter is going to get a pretty slick ride. I would have sold a kidney or a nut for a car like that at 16... lol

Re: 1991 Trans Am convertible project for my Dad
Got the drivers door hinges updated with new bushings and pins. I cant wait to get the door installed to see the difference. They are super tight now. Before when you'd shut the door, it was comparable to shutting the tailgate on a 1958 Dodge truck lol. Seriously, it was so bad that the bottom rear portion of the door skin was actually splitting from the door shell from hitting the jamb when it was closing. Problem should be 100% solved

Re: 1991 Trans Am convertible project for my Dad
It got a well deserved bath today over my lunch hour. This car has seen it's fair share of gravel roads. It was horrible. I bet it weighs 30lbs lighter, lol. Didnt get much done today other than I treated and scrubbed the crap out of the surface rust spots with PHIX.
I should have took a pic of the humungous wasp nest i washed out from under that rear bumper absorber!
Gave the engine a degreasing, too

I'm gonna have to figure out how to get the bottom edge of the top to not curl up. I dont know if that will stretch out over time, or what..??

Exactly. They finally put factory cup holders in a Third Gen, but couldn't put in ones that could withstand 30 years of being kicked

Re: 1991 Trans Am convertible project for my Dad
Wow, that’s gonna look great when painted!
The seats look great... I’ve been in some cars I would have sworn we’re leather but was told, nope, it’s vinyl... Save a little money, get more durability and no one would know..
My top curls a little sometimes too.. When I leave it up a while it stops... I’d bet once it sits in the sun a bit it’ll stretch..
Serious progress on that car.. nice work!

Making progress.....
I painted the rear bumper today. There are 2 different variences to this color. The factory paint was the prime color, and I'm painting it the darker varience. I like it a lot more than the lighter one. I have the car all sanded down and getting ready for the bodywork. I'm leaving that to our body man at work. I'm gonna get the front bumper and ground effects painted while the body guy is working his magic.

Here's the difference in the color variences. The rear bumper is the darker shade that I'm painting the car, and the front bumper cover is the old paint with the lighter shade....

Here's how she's sitting right now. The drivers front fender was originally red lol. Must have been a pretty minor fender bender, because nothing else around it had any other paint work done on it. (I had already replaced the original hood....it was dented up from something falling on it)

I wouldn't be surprised if the red fender was installed at the factory and just overpainted green.

I bet it looks amazing in person while sitting out in the sun. Going to be a real hard car to photograph as far as capturing the color. Looks like you're making quick progress.

Car looks great so far! I love the look of DGM when it's fresh. One of the best colours to ever go on a Third Gen IMO. I came across these two rascals in my daily Kijiji scrolls.. give me one reason why I shouldn't be telling CIBC to increase my line of credit

I like the darker green vs the stock color. Had a Nissan truck in about the same color, looked black in the shade but really popped in the sun. Good job, great looking Bird.
