MIchigan???

Hey guys, I was just wondering if there is a regional board that would include michigan? It seems to have gotten left out of every board, I would think midwest. I know there are a few guys on here from michigan. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

thanks nick

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could get the michigan guys to start posting on one of these boards?
Should I post a message on all of the other boards or would they just get locked? If anyone has a clue I would really appreciate it!

thanks nick

Thanks for replying "BAD" and "Warrior", I would like to get some thirdgen guys around so we can set up a day to go to the track this spring. I am going to milan dragway the first weekend in april, weather permitting. Probably on sunday, the track is a little better on sundays. So if any wants to meet me out there feel free, and spread the word!

Thanks Nick

Yeah, I'm from Michigan too, and I've published a lot of technical stuff to this board! under representedandreadytofightback!

he he he! >whew<, anyway, us Michiganders could simply begin posting in the midwest section and add ourselves.

That said, who wants to come over to my place in the fall for Modfest 2002? Ever hear of it? It'll be the third annual event. We've done eveything from MAF porting to powdercoating, to header and torque converter installs. I traditionally hold it two weeks prior to the CamaroZ28 Mid-Michigan Mania event.

Pizza, half-a-dozen F-bodies, Slot car eliminations on the second floor of the garage, rock and roll, and more.

Michigan is more than welcome to post on the northeast board

Dan, I might take you up on that next year!

How far are you from Ohio?

I'm about 105 miles from the US23 expressway border of Michigan/Ohio. Near East Lansing.

You'll be welcome!

Hey Folks. Being a southern michigan resident, a gathering sounds like fun to me. I am not real big into drag racing, and my car is really not set up for it, but, would love to get together with some other 3rd-genners.

Let's see what we can set up.

I'll begin planning for a third-gen Modfest, then! Maybe I can do two of them this year: A thirdgen.org mid-Michigan Modfest, and a Camaroz28.com mid-Michigan Modfest.

When would you all like to have it? There's the Memphis gathering in June, we could do something two weeks before then if you like. That'll give you time to fix anything you break before the gathering.

I'll start a new topic once we get a little input from you all.

Modfest sounds like fun, though I am going to be doing some uplanned mods very soon. I blew a head gasket a few days ago, and the head or block is cracked. Not the way I wanted to start the spring( its almost spring atleast). So I am going to pull the engine this weekend and see how bad the damage is. The engine is hydro-locked right now, so I hope there are no bent rods or the block is not cracked. If anyone has any ideas for some cheap heads/ cam combo please let me know. I hate to tear down the motor and not do any performance mods to it. Thanks guys

If your block is cracked, I have a spare for you: A "010" block w/ 4-bolt mains and ARP studs. It's been bored +.040", but needs a sleeve. Other than that, it's clean and crack free.

I also have a cast 383 crank that is fresh and in the bag, plus a balancer, a flexplate, and a full set of 5.565" con rods. Add a set of +.040" pistons from a 350 Chevy application and you are in business.

These are extra parts left over from my minirammed 385 project. I bought them, then expanded my scope to include a Miniram, nitrous, and roller cammed 6800 RPM operation. Thus, I needed to "upgrade" to all forged internals Project creep - The destroyer of all budgets!

The block is $125 and the crank/flexplate/balancer/rods is $200.

Need pistons? I have a set of +.030" forged speedpro pistons with ceramic coating for $80. They need to be weight matched though---

Thank you for the parts offer WS6, I am going to have to make sopme difficult decisions pretty soon. And I will need as many low priced performance parts as I can get. My biggest concern is finding a good set of heads for cheap. Budget and performance just do not seem to go togethor anymore. As soon as I get the motor out I will let you guys know how bad it is.

Need low budget heads?

How about a set of Corvette aluminum heads for $550? Unported; not molested in any way. Once I finish off my flow bench (yes I am building one this summer) we could even flow 'em, assuming they are not already propelling you to mid-13's in the quarter mile...

Sounds pretty good WS6, how many miles are on the heads, are they all original or have they been reconditioned? Thanks for all the part information!!!

The heads are nearly new. 10,000 miles on them. Purchased from GMPP. They have LT4 valve springs on them, but thats the only change.

I'd use them myself, but the compression ratio for my zero-deck 385 shortblock would be stratospheric.

I need a 67cc chamber, not a 58cc chamber. These belong to a fellow named Andrew who frequents the CZ28, thirdgen.org and third-gen@f-body.com lists on occasion. He doesnt write much these days though... I guess he's too busy working for F**D these days

Well I would vote for the 8th of june, if I have not towed my beater to the junkyard by then! I finally got the motor apart and to my suprise nothing is cracked or broken. The machine shop says they can mill the head and fix it, so I am porting while it is apart. I guess my only worry is whether one of the rod bearings spun, but I am going to chance it for now. It turns over smooth and looks fine. I am also goin gto put a cam in it comp XE 8-502-8, 218 224 490 503 on a 112. I will also port match the intake, I am tempted to siamese the lower intake. But I think I will wait and see how it runs. Wish me luck, thanks guys

I think we're talking about doing a modfest on June 8th. I have a similar thread going. Shall we plan?? Its not that far away!

BTW, I have enough tools to do a torque converter swap in 4 hours or less. Does anyone have a TC to get swapped? I have a spare Summit/TCI converter laying around for 1984 1/2 - 1992 700R4's sitting here if anyone wants to swap out their 1600 RPM stocker... Its approximately 2000 RPM and works great until you start increasing your cam duration like I did... I'd sell it for $75 *AND* let you use the tools to pop it in!

How's that for a mod??

My cam is a 218/224 degree duration cam with Xtreme Energy flat hydraulic tappet lobes, on a 110 degree LSA. Its dialed in at 104 degrees ICL, which I believe, needs to be backed off to 108 degrees for max exhileration. I'm using Comp Magnum 1.52 roller-tipped rockers and think a 1.6 rocker might work okay, considering the modified head below.

The heads are 1987 centerbolt cylinder heads with broached valve guides. (non-self aligning rockers.) They have been fully ported and polished by me, and also sport 1.94 inch intake valves. The combustion chamber is around 59 cc.

The heads with modified valves can handle 0.500 inch of valve lift but no more due to clearance issues with the valve stem & retainer. They are installed with a FelPro steel head gasket with 3.2cc volume and together, the motor has a 9.5:1 compression ratio.

The cam seems to come on at about 3,000 RPM and rev hard to 6K. I've accidently taken it to 6800 once or twice so I know it revs that high, but I'm afraid that is valvetrain killing territory. I wouldnt want to kill my nice new valve springs, so I've dialed my rev limiter in at 6100 RPM.

Another MI guy here.. I don't know that my camaro will be self-propelled by June, but I'll sure come and hang out with you guys! Anyone ready to do a 1LE install? I'd sure like to see one get put together before I do mine. Maybe when Dan isn't looking, I'll jack his up, pull the wheels, and scrutinize it carefully

Just as long as you put the wheels back on when you are done, I'm cool with that! Have you seen my 1LE brake page lately?

http://www.ws6transam.org/1LEbrake.html

Theres some pictures right there! BTW, want me to mod a set of spindles for you? I got a set right here that only need the threads and powdercoat. Tell me which color you want and they will be waiting for your upgrade in June! I know these are good spindles 'cause they came off my car: I've autocrossed with them, road raced with them, and never once lost a wheel. []

Well then, I guess I'd better get under my car and finish installing the transmission!! Actually, the trans is in, and I only need to reinstall the crossmember, the distributor, and tighten up the exhaust.

Oh yeah, then fill the trans with fluid. I'd hate to miss that part!

April 6 and 7th, eh? We'll see if I can get my wife to clear that weekend. Yes, it would be fun to see what this 2700 RPM stall converter does for my E/T... I also want to advance my cam to 108 degrees on the intake centerline to see how she does.

Well good luck getting the trans back in shape, All I have to do yet is figure out my exhaust. The dual 2 1/4 flex pipe with no muffler is just a little too loud. When it was single exhaust it sounded fine, but I am going to get a ticket the way it is know. If we go to milan dragway the track will be a little better on sunday the 7th, but it might be a little busier. They do a little more prep work, more glue. But I am up for a road trip if some guys want to go to a different track!

Any weekend is fine for me, I can usually clear my schedule. I will definitly be going to the dream cruise, Though I cannot afford to get another ticket like I did last year, for doing a giant burnout. It would be very cool, if a bunch of us could get togethor for the dream cruise though. That would be sweet!! I usually do not see a lot of thirdgen cars out there.

Also Moffest 2002, is scheduled for june 8th, I think that is the first real weekend of june?

Tom, have you run that car at the strip, yet? I am curious as to the performance of the 230/230 cam in that engine. That's pretty stout for a 305... How did you get the 10:1 compression ratio?

I have a roller retrofit cam here with a 230/236 degree duration and .540" of lift... I was thinking of trying it with some shaved Corvette heads to net me a 10.25:1 compression ratio, just to see what the 305 would do. However, the cam is really designed for my EFI'ed Minirammed 385, so I'm saving it. Still, I want to hear your MPH, if you are willing to mention it.

damn i wish i had gotten it to the track before it broke. I have street raced a lot though and can tell you what i've beaten.

I'd say it's about even with a new LS1 Z28 with an average driver. it'll beat most any stock mustang, and I've even been even with a couple C5s.

My best guess for a time would be mid to high 13s considering the cars I've beaten were probably not being driven by the best drivers. I've gotten pretty good at my launch and shift points, the roadracing helped me be consistent.

As for the motor, the car is not running on the computer, which is why the cam works. It's also about as large as i would go for a cam. I ported the factory L69 heads myself and milled them with my friend's mill for 10:1 compression. the bottom end is all stock rebuilt stuff, the pistons are even original!

I also ported the factory aluminum intake and put a non cc qjet on. the distributor is kind of a mystery, it came with the car when i bought it cause the guy was trying to clean out his shop, it was red so maybe msd?

i also run headers, y pipe, dynomax piping, no cat, flowmaster muffler. I installed stiffer springs with better pushrods also.

The car runs great! it makes decent torque and pulls HARD right to 6200 rpms, sometimes beyond...oops.

I'd recommend the cam to anyone without a computer and not using the car as a daily driver.

Hey guys, another Michigander,

I'd be willing to get together for some drag racing or car fixing (esp if its my car ). As you can see from my sig, it needs some help!! As i am very new to thirdgens so do i. I think i have a line on a new T-5, or at least the parts to fix mine.
The car is in Novi at the moment, though i am in Flint. The only good thing about flint is that there are a lot of junk yards and most have a decent selection of 3rd gens.

Anyway thought i'd throw in my $0.02

Steve, I happen to know where there might be TWO 5-speed transmissions available in the Flint area, for a measly $400. Both are from 1986 Z28's. One is perfect, the other supposedly pops from third gear once and a while.

Want me to look up my buddy and see if he's still in the area? (He's retired and sometimes heads to Florida when its cold)

Sure, look him up!!
Out of curiosity, ask him what he would want for just the good one. I have a friend of a friend that is buying/ trading a T-10 that came with the car for the T-5.
The reason that i don't want the T-10 is that a) I'd like overdrive and b) the LG4 isn't putting out the #s to break the T-5.

Modfest June 8th, 2002.

Sounds like it's going to happen, then!

Okay, I'll post directions & details a little closer to June 8th. Probably first part of April.

I'm going to need some volunteers for a few functions but I'm going to move all relevant details to the Modfest thread.

Well I finally got to g-tech my car today in the cold, it has a serious stutter at the top of 2nd gear! And a lot more low end power than I was counting on, it was very hard to launch. Easing it out of the hole, still spinning the tires I managed a 14.23@ 105.1. So hopefully I can turn that into a 13.4-5@102 at the dragway with some hook. Time will tell.

Looking for some help in MI

Nice to see all the people from Michigan! I've almost got all the parts to start my twin turbo build, but I will need some help on the prom. Either I'm going to buy the stuff and TRY to do it myself, but I could really use some help. If there is anyone around the detroit area that I could talk to, that would be great!
