NJ is keeping me from my IROC

Guys, I had to pull my IROC off the road for a little while when I got laid off from my job. Well im working now and wanted to get the IROC back on the road. I have a 2002 VW passat that I use to go back and forth to work, im ready to now put my ROC back on the road, but when I tried to add it to my current policy, it's going to cost me an extra $800 a year on top of my overpriced NJ insurance now. Has anyone had any experiance in insuring a car out of state? My parents live in florida and it would be about $400-$600/year to insure and register the car there. Can I do this and drive the car up here? This may be my only option.

I really dont think that would work...Normally when u move into state from out you only have a certain amount of time to register it to the state...how long or if this is the case im not really sure...call your local notary or maybe even check in Florida...See what they say...

It is possible to do, as I've known a number of friends that got away with it with PA insurance and a relative's address. Only problem though, one of them got in an accident, insurance found out it was insured out of state, and is now under investigation for insurance fraud. You might want to pay the extra 3-400 a year to avoid something like that.

$800/year for our cars doesn't sound that bad. I'm paying a little over a thousand.

Try talking to one of your insurance agents and work out a better setup for your insurance. Imagine a 22 year old with a 99 Cherokee and my 86 IROC plus the wife's suv, WOW. Trust me, you don't want to know what some insurance companies wanted me to pay. I spent 1/2 hr on the phone and managed to still keep everything fully insured but cut costs in half. Most insurance companies will set you up with their standard policy which tends to be whatever will make them the most money. Start off asking what your state's MINUMUM coverage is and go from there.

Hmm, my car is $2000 a year normally, I get $1,000 knocked off it because i'm away at school without my car. I actually have it with me, so if I get into an accident, i'm majorly screwed. Each additional car is another 2k

i'd definitely just pay the extra money and not risk the insurance fraud. All it takes is one little fender bender and you're *** will be theirs. You'll either be paying out the *** to the insurance company when they sue you or taking it up the *** from Ike the big burly man that's your cell mate in prison. I pay 85 a month for liability only on my GTA, that's 1020 a year. 800 a year is nothing.

If your paying 2k per vehicle then your policy is set up too high, especially considering every single insurance company I have dealt with gives you a discount if you have multiple vehicles on your policy. Most ins. companies will get you to have the full coverage 100k/300k coverage which I have never seen anyone need. Unless you live in beverly hills and you have an overpriced Ferrari or Lotus, you don't need that high of a coverage unless you have a lien against the car (i.e. a loan). Hell, after seeing this topic the other day I have even managed to get my ins. to go down again. You really gotta haggle those greedy bastards, they do it to you, and they don't give a rat's A$$ for anyone but themselves. But then again, if you have numerous tickets and/or accidents, that would definately make your ins. jump. Good luck!!

I am an insurance broker in ny, and I say pay the extra 300-400 dollars if you get into an acident with out of state insurance and they investigate you will be screwed for years to come. it will stay on your recored for atleast 3 years. and you will probably paying assigned risk type of rates which are very high.

as for state minimum limits your not very smart to take that out these days NY is 25/50/10 i dont know of any cars out there today that if you hit it and total it can be replaced for under 10,000, with miminmum limits thats all the insurance compnay will pay. if you have minimum limits and total even a civic, which costs roughly 15,000 or so your screwed, you would need to come up with money out of your pocket and will be in a lawsuit.

Very few civics are worth 15k, the moment the car is titiled the value goes way down, and the way stupid people are destroying there civics its further devaluing them.

if you don't drive like an idiot you won't get into an accident, at least one that is your fault. as for civics costing over 10k, come to pa and buy the bastard one for 5k even the new ones aren't much over 10k around here. as for the state minimum, i said earlier to start there, ask what everything means and what it will cover, i would never tell someone to do something that would screw them over big time. as for insurance brokers and etc. everyone i have dealt with always made himself sound like he's smarter than everyone, no offense to them but i don't trust their words, take em in writing.
