Spot putty for the deeper little dings and high build primer, not the rattle can crap either.

Didn't use any spot putty on mine, just high build plus a guide coat and used a long board to sand it down. Did this 3 times and the door was ready for paint.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Thank you, I have a friend locally that says when I am ready, he can spray my car with that high build primer. should I do some spot putty on all the dings, or just the major ones?

Hey Evil cartman, Just re read your post and realized you did recommend spot putty for the deeper dings. DO you recommend the same stuff marc or don did above?

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Think I've used the orange non-mix stuff before. Give it a shot, worst thing you'd have to do is sand it back out and try something else. Then there's glazing putty you mix, it's lighter weight than the regular body filler and easier to spread for the shallow dings.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

I feel obliged to tell you to be careful in the spot putty you use. The stuff at Kragen (3M Bondo) is not that great. It has a tendancy to shrind as it dries and cures. From expirience, I would use a catalized filler (2 part) for your larger dings and leave the spot putty for pinholes and very minor cracks. Talk to Ryan, we have a hookup at Jerry's paint who is super knowledgeable and fair priced.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Spot putty for small stuff, (pinholes, small scratches, etc). Remember to take your time, dont rush it. You dont want to look bad & say I wish i would have done this or that.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Hey Travis,
Here's some thought on your paint. The rule of thumb is to sand down to just one coat. More than one coat of color and you take it down to the factory primer. The biggest thing you need to pay attention to now is your chemicals. Choose one company and absolutely do not mix and match. Do not believe anything written down that states "this product line is compatable with such & such product line". The chemicles react differently, shrink and breath differently and it's looking for trouble.

Once you get down to where you are building up primer, but away the DA. Get yourself a flat board sanding kit and rent, buy, or aquire a lesson on the correct ways to flat board sand. Be sure that your initial sealer is compatible with the original product GM used on the 3rd Gen paints.

If you've never tackled your own paint job before, it's crazy not to get one of these cheap how to do it films. It could be the difference between $500 in high build primer and $750 in high build with big waves still hanging around.

:You've got the talent and right idea to line up the panels first. I can tell you how to get really crisp edges along the sheetmetal bends. Do you know if you want to go one stage, two stage, or three stage paint?

I'll help you any way I CAN with the paint stuff. Nitro Nicky

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Thanks bro, I will keep that in mind as the project comes along
The only thing I have used the DA on was to remove the decals. everything else has been block sanded.. I have gone a bit overboard perhaps, but my factory paint was such crud that it took only one swipe to see primer... the paint was soooo thin

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Evercoat is a top notch product. I also failed to share one of the other 'BIG' secrects... whipe the entire vehicle down with a 'prepsol' or proffesional grade wax/silicone remover product before sanding. Sanding tends to grind that stuff deeper into the layers of material and is what creates fish-eyes in your new paint.

There's no such thing as going overboard; as it's the prep that makes the paint job. I've seen guys do fantastically detailed prep jobs on cars and then had MACO shoot the material- cars turned out **** perfect with a little rubbing & buffing afterwards.

In 5-7 more years, people will be walking right by my G37 in the parking lots, while they'll spot yours from 100 yards away and go running for their camera's.....

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

WEll ****, looks like the stuff I bought is not the same as yours marc's.. I hope it works out as well for me.. Here is my latest shot from today. You can see where I used it in certain spots.. I ran out of sandpaper so I called it quits for the day. I went ahead and tried to putty in that deeper ding on the crease. Il see if it makes a difference or not after I sand it down with 320grit tomorrow.

Also, I got this drivers fender aligned the best I could, it was a lot worse fit then the passenger side, I had to elongate the mounting hole tab under the car quite a bit to get the fender gap to align with the door as best as possible. it will have to do
Ill try to get a better angle shot tomorrow to match my original picture.

X2. I redid my tailgate with $50 gallon gallespie paint and I can read a newspaper in it. It is all in the prep work for real.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

got all the sanding done, gotta fix a few major door dings in the passenger door.
I have someone recruited to paint my car sometime this december or january.
My holley HP efi should be at my door sometime this coming week fingers crossed.
(they said 5 day lead time + 3-5 business days to ship) whatever that means.
Once the engine is running ill be getting my driveshaft sized for it and probably recruiting marc to fab me another one of his fabulous Y pipes again before it goes to my painter
so this december/january will be the finishing touches on my car finally and I will definitely be ready for 2011 pending no crazy **** blows up.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

good job, i see its been a few months since I posted in this topic. the weather hasnt been nice of coarse. ive done some touch up here and there, but overall its pretty much done. I placed my order online today for the paint, so it should be here next week, then I need to schedule with my painter when to haul my car over to his place. my hood still needs some smoothing but its come out real well. the engine is running real good on the holley efi as well, im quite impressed. look at my sig for a before and current flashing gif.

Re: TraviZ's iroc reconstruction thread.

Some progress yesterday, heres an example. I just need to cut the clearcoat to give that clean shine.
I got the hood and all gfx/spoiler/gascap/doorhandles done.
this week I will get the rest of the body all done!
