Looking at owning a thirdgen. Again.
i had a black 87 iroc a couple years ago and i was always mad i sold it. Now Im looking at buying another black 87 iroc project. its missing the motor but does have a stick. Im running a LT1 in my 79 cutlass but was thinking of swapping the LT1 into this 87 Im looking at. i dont know how the t-5 will handle the the 350's torque but Im getting pretty stoked to see it in the flesh tomorrow. the guy is asking 750$ but im not sure if its a real iroc or just a z28, and im not sure what parts hes throwing in with the deal so i may try and talk him down... i am but a poor kid after all...

Cool I hope you find the car your looking for. You might wanna look for a t56 transmission and do that swap instead. they were designed for the lt1's.

A stock T-5 with a 350 is anybodies guessing game as to how long it will last. There are some guys on here who have mildly modified 350's and the T-5 works well. Others haven't had as much luck.
With these cars GM didn't put the T-5 behind the L98's because they thought that the trans wouldn't hold up well behind the L98's torque. Someone correct me if I am wrong on my ratings here. I think a stock World Class T-5 has a max torque rating of 300 lb·ft.
In 1987 was when the L98 debuted and it had 320 lb·ft. In the later years the L98’s torque rating increased from 320 lb·ft to 345 lb·ft in the ’90-’92 L98’s. The highest torque LB9 305 engine you could get was included in the G92 / T-5 performance package in the ’89-’92 Camaros. That engine (with the G92 rear gear package and L98 camshaft and T-5 trans) was rated at 300 lb·ft

This is a G-Force T-5 style transmission. It has more torque capacity than a stock T-5.
I still think that UnderCover89TBI is pointing you in the right direction by looking at a T-56. Stock they have a torque capacity that is over 400 lb·ft. You can also get one that has shorter gear ratios in the first 3 gears compared to the T-5. You also get two overdrives, 5th and 6th gears. The T-5 can work and it would be a direct swap but the T-56 has some advantages. It depends on what you want to do with the car and how much you want to spend.
