Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

Alright well i couldnt post here for some stupid reason so i can now update my progress. For the injectors i bought rc75lb's so they are high impedance and can be used with out a controller. I worked on it quite a bit this weekend. I got the turbo headers on and got the turbo mounted in the area where the battery would sit. I then took off the entire front bumper cover, and bumper. I welded up a bunch of brackets to mount the intercooler. I also used this to strengthen the front since i cant use the bumper support. I then got all of the cold side pretty much fabbed up. I then pulled everything out down to the shortblock for my new heads and cam to go in. My heads are at Opel Engineering right now getting checked over.

Here are some pics of the intercooler.....

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

why did you mount the intercooler so far forward of the radiator? A bunch of builds I've seen show it basically where the A/C condenser is located and the bumper support can stay.

Well the intercooler is actially only 3" in front of the radiator on the bottom. I couldnt mount it behind the bumper support because it would block the air flowing across it and i didnt want to mount it any closer than 3" to the radiator so the radiator can still get air and the intercooler doesnt heat up from the radiator. The intercooler is 33x12x4 so its pretty big.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

Well i went with a snow performance stage 2 meth kit thats boost refrenced. This way it increases the amount of meth injected with the amount of boost. I got it of ls1tech for $300 but i think its like $450 new. I also hear great things about the alky control kit.

For the boost controller i went with the turbosmart eboost2. Its the newest and one of the best out there right now. Here is a link to the new era performance one on ebay. Its about $100 cheaper from them than anyone else.

Ah okay, I was looking to pick up some 60#'s because I thought those were the largest high-impedance ones, forgot about the RC high-impedance. I won't need any more than 60#'s anyways...that will easily allow me to hit over 700-800rwhp with a dry shot, and that's the goal using a wet/dry dual- or triple-staged setup, so I'll be more than good

Looks pretty sick so far man. What are you going to do with the bumper to allow air in? TA bumper isn't exactly ideal for a FMIC.

This is the one debate i am having right now. I was actually going to ask for suggestions from everyone. I dont think i can bring myself to cut a hole in the actual cover so i might run a flap on the bottom like a air dam.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

everyone cuts holes in the front bumper, it happens. Can't really run 2 air dams, whereas if you mounted it up against the radiator then the factory airdam would be sufficient. Us camaro guys get lucky cuz we have the fog light holes to feed air in. I'll have a pic for you in 2 weeks or so.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

That's probably what I'd do. I wouldn't want to cut it up either. Could make some sort of air dam for it, similar to the FTRA/SSRA and such the LS1 cars use to force air into the lid from the bottom of the car.

looks like I for sure will have to be forging this motor this winter if I want to hang with the big boys next year

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

psssh a buddy has 150 mph traps with a stock longblock with 150k on it with original rings and bearings. crappy smogger heads and a 100 shot to spool the turbos. I think he's down to 9.33 in the 1/4 mile now too. forging is over rated Check out this month's car craft he's in there with a twin turbo thirdgen on a tiny tiny budget running those times.

lol, my catchcan is already catching way more oil than I'm comfortable spraying on top of, so I'll spend $2800 forging it and then spray the **** out of it

don't ls1 motors **** away more oil than any other gen engine? My buddy adds oil all the time to his since it either drinks it or it's going down the intake or something.

Yea they are notorious for consuming oil, mine doesnt consume any but i have a couple buddies that go through at least a quart ever 3000 miles. I have known people with brand new corvette's as well to go through that much right off the show room floor.

Another thought i had which i will probably do is put a small electric pusher fan on the intercooler. I have seen guys with fans on their intercoolers before so i thought it might help out.

Yea i dont think i am going to even run a fan, i talked to several people, and i know tim duran(turboedtpi) is just using a airdam and it runs cool. I think that along with methanol injection should be good. I am also going to be running e85 so that should help as well.

If i am going to waste nitrous its going into my motor and not just cooling the intercooler. lol

Wish I was going to be around this weekend to stop by and take a look. Maybe Sunday?

I like the E85 choice by the way. Couldn't do it on a car I drive much though as there aren't a ton of E85 stations around here yet where it wouldn't be an inconvenience to fill up. I still want to do that with a 3.4 I have sitting at work though. Bolt on the set of late model heads I have for it with the stock RWD pistons, run it on E85 with a big cam and some spray, and see what she does

Yea the gas city right right by my house sells it so its pretty good for me. My buddy with a 02 gtp with 12psi, headers, scan, intake, my tb and injectors, picked up one of those control boxes for $200 and it allows him to run on gas and e85 and any mix in between. He used to see 6 degrees knock retard with gas and now sees nothing with e85. His gas mileage also really didnt change at all like people says it will plus for $0.60 cheaper than gas per gallon not bad. Give me a call at 847 636 3552 if you ever want to stop by. I might be going to byron for the Wheel Standing Championships on sunday.

Well i do have HPTuners and i do have a wideband but i think that when i start pushing 700+rwhp i should probably get it tuned and i know mike@straightline is the man at tuning 2 and 3 bar SD. So i will probably take it to him at first.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

Yeah, I need to talk to him about tuning dry nitrous too. Last time I talked to him, he told me he prefers to tune wet shots, but I really want to run dry for at least one of the two stages.

He's definitely where I was planning on taking the car next year until I started deciding on a dry kit. I might drive the car all the way out to Pennsylvania to have Matt at Harris Speed Works tune it if need be. I figure that's a long ways off though...need to build a shortblock in the next few months first :P

Yea i am starting to think that if i can swing it i might want to just swap in a forged shortblock during the winter and just be done with it.

Well i made a huge purchase today, i picked up a innovative msbc-1 boost controller and got rid of the e boost2. here is a link to the specs. I will update my progress later.

dude thanks for showin all these 4th gen guys and foxbodys that thirdgens can whoop up on everybody. with the right parts of course. i know a guy with a single turbo foxbody that did 10's first time out with his new setup and alot less power than you will put down. with over 1000 at the wheels u should see 9's at least. i would love to see this thing run with this new setup at route 66 cause i dont think gld or byron could handle the awesome power of this monster.

he's showing up the 4th gen guys with a 4th gen motor. If he made 1000rwhp he better be going faster than a high 9 and there are tons of cars at gld running awesome times with no issues and at byron. Route 66 on a tnt night isn't that great since all the street cars tear up the starting line and bring water up there etc etc. Tim is doing an awesome job of putting together a pretty expensive car now, but it always looks great. So I give him 2 thumbs up.

its not technically a 4th gen f-body motor as they are also used in the trucks and suv's. i know that gld and byron can handle 6 sec passes from race cars, but ive heard alot of complaints about track prep and such. i know that 1000+ whp should be better than high 9's but for a street car that is fast enough.

"Tim is doing an awesome job of putting together a pretty expensive car now"- exactly. not many people put as much time an effort into a thirdgen. well not as many as 4thgens. i just wanted to say thanks for doing this to a thirdgen instead of a 4th gen and i think swapping an lsx based mtoor into a thirdgen is the coolest possible mod you can do to one.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

Well thanks for the kind words guys. Yea this build is going to be a well thought out build and not cutting any corners. Well...

I SOLD MY TURBO.... Well i bought it for $1100 and i just sold it for $1600. Not to bad.

WELL I BOUGHT ANOTHER!!!!! Its a gt47 88mm unit. It will support alot more hp but will also cause alot of fitment issues. After talking to some big guys in the turbo industry they told me that the gtk1000 would choke on e845 at about 700rwhp. So i bought one that will support WAY over 1000rwhp and i made about $300 on the deal. Tim

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

dang 88 mm.....really stepping it up huh, makes mine look tiny. Don't see how the turbo would choke depending on the fuel choice but ok. How much are you going spray to spool that turbo up initially?

Yea i really didnt understand that at all, he said it would be good for 700rwhp on pump gas 93 and if i ran e85 i would have a tough time making 600rwhp. I actually have no idea but have been told that by a couple people. O well i sold it for $1600 and bought the 88mm for $1300 so that really puts my turbo total at $800 so thats not bad at all for a gt4788. And i dont know if i am going to spray or not yet. I will definitely see how it runs without any, and there is a new controller out that will spray nitrous and shut off at a certain boost level which is very cool. I might be switching from the th400 to a t56 as well so i might be moving a little bit away from a track car and more of a bad *** street car. I will still put a 8pt chromoly cage cert to 8.50 in it though as there is a shop in peroria that only charges 1200 installed for a custom chromoly cage. Tim

An 8 point cage will cert to 8.50 for both nhra and ihra. Check both rule books, for an unmodified firewall car an 8 point is fine. There is no need for the X in the back and dont need to go through the firewall.

11.999 IHRA / 11.49 NHRA

1. single layer fire jacket is needed.
2. Helmet
(Snell 95 or SFI 41.1A min.)
3. Bellhousing (SFI 6.1/6.2)
4. Driveshaft Loop or any time a slick is used at ant ET.
5. Flywheel/Clutch (SFI 1.1/1.2)

Now for NHRA it changes again for many things at 10.99

1. Aftermarket Rear Axles are needed
2. Harmonic Balancer (SFI 18.1)
3. Master Electrical Cutoff (135mph)
4. Transmission Shield (SFI 4.1)

Then for 9.99 and quicker...
all the above plus a 8 point cage for non modified firewall cars.
1. Double layer Pants and Jacket (sold the old jacket wont work)
neck brace, double layer gloves, shoes
2. Auto Trans Flexplate (SFI 29.1)
3. Driver Restraint System (SFI 16.1)
4. Flexplate Shield (SFI 30.1)
5. NHRA Competition License
6. NHRA Chassis Sticker
7. Parachute @ 150mph
8. Window Net

Its all right on NHRA's site under there Quck Ref E.T. guide
----------
Maybe you were thinking i said 8 point bar and not cage too, i just thought of that because an 8 point bar will cert to 10.0. Tim

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

no an 8 point is the main hoop, 2 forward facing bars, and 2 bars going backwards, along with 2 bars to the driveshaft tunnel

a 10 point also has the halo above your head and bars running along the a-pillar down to the dash, which would cert lower than 10.0

8 point is good to 10.0 as is a 6 point, since the driveshaft tunnel bars aren't required on stock suspension setups.
10 point is good to 8.50?

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

There is a big difference in a 8 point roll bar and 8 point roll cage. An 8 point bar, is main hoop, rear bars, door bars and ds tunnel bars. An 8 point cage is main hoop, rear bars, door bars, winshield hoop with connecting to main hoop. A 10 pt cage has all of that plus either X-bars in the rear bar, or 2 bars through the firewall to strut brace. There for a 12pt cage has both the firewall bars and rear x bars. An 8 point bar is good to 10.0 and a 8 point cage is good to 8.50. Believe me i have both nhra and ihra books and it is legal for both. I never knew this until recently. Tim

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

10 point cage does not have any X's or firewall to strut brace. go open a jegs catalog and look at their 10 point comp. engineering setups compared to their 8 point setups. NHRA and IHRA "might" word it different compared to my 2005 books that I have, but either way it would be confusing to the chassis guy if you asked for a 8 point and really meant 10 with no extra bars. Just don't wanna see you get the wrong setup welded in Tim.

PS, can your foot fit into that turbo inlet yet Any bigger and you could power a small city.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

Well i have now picked up a gt47 88 since people thought the 76mm would be to small on e85. i am now going to pick up some 160lb injectors and a injector driver. So i have my new motron 60lb's for sale. Havent gotten much done but have done some minor things, here are some pics of the painted intake manifold and valve covers... I also polished the elbow and then clear coated it so it wont ever need polishing, it lost alot of shine but at least i wont have to polish it all the time.

Re: UPS MAN you are my hero...

I just scored a big one, i just picked up 37 feet of kevlar braided -10an line off ebay for $100. This stuff is from a nascar team and brand new. From summit its $42.39 a foot. So that would be $1568.43 for this line and i paid $100 shipped to my door. Looks like im going to use it for my fuel line, turbo drain, trans cooler lines, and everything else since i have 37' of it. Its super light, like under 1 lb for all 37ft. Heres a link to it on summit.
