Repeat performance

Well, almost. I RU'd again Friday night, except this time no broke singles.

The night started off almost the same - raining. Except this time it hung around longer and I didn't get my first TT until after 8 p.m. (TT normally starts at 4:30). Only one time trial, first round of elimination started just before 10 p.m. The wind was messing with us, changing speed and direction, but the DA stayed right at 8400' from the TT on.

I did get one redlight win (somebody in a substitute car). In the 3rd round they pulled me over as a bye candidate, but there turned out to be an even number of cars so I still had to run - instead of being in the 4th pair, I was in the last pair, and ended up racing a fellow club member (since this wasn't a club race, we had to run each other).

I only got tree'd once, in the 4th round against an out-of-town 4th gen Camaro V6 running mid-16's - but he was .09 off his dial with a .03 better light, which gave me room to squeeze in.

In the 5th round, I ran the 2005 Div 5 Sportsman ET champ - tree'd him a by about .03, he broke out. I was a little upset with myself because I let him around to take the stripe.

In the semi, our lights were identical to the thousandth, he took the stripe on a break-out, I put a 3 on my dial backing off. In the final, our lights were almost even (mine .004 better), he was .01 off his dial, I blipped the throttle and took .03 stripe and broke out by .010. I dialed the quickest of the night and still broke out. I'm starting to get the message that the car likes to hot lap. We ran the final at 1:21 a.m. (4th through 7th round in 50 minutes).

In the Camaro, my son took out #2 in high school season points in the 2nd round, then forgot to release the parking brake in the 3rd round (wasn't set hard, but enough to produce drag) - poor light, .25 off the dial-in, end of night for him.

Re: Repeat performance

Congrats on another strong performance. That should move you up nicely in the standings.

It was another not-so-good night for the top 10. 1 guy didn't show (his son was getting married in Europe this week), 2 of them went out in the first round, 4 went out in the 2nd (one of those had a first round bye), and the remaining 3 went 2, 3, and 4 rounds, respectively.

I went into the night in 15th place. From what I can see from the on-line postings (they only list standings 1-10 on the site): #1 maintained his position, 2 went to 6th, 3 maintained, and I'm 4th by 3 points over #5, who stayed in the same place (unless someone 11-14 did well, and I don't know who they were). I'm 4 rounds out of 1st place.

The guy who won it is the son (adult, law school graduate) of the track director of sales and announcer (he announces for NHRA events as well - not the son, his dad). It was the first race he (the son, you know, the lawyer - the guy who beat me in the final) had been out to this year.

Today and tomorrow (Sat/Sun) they're having a locally-produced replacement to the Super Chevy show. They had a "Bonus" (jackpot) race this afternoon. I'm not sure how many cars there were, well over 200 I'm sure, 8 rounds to win (electronics and non-electronics combined in the quarterfinals). I made it to the quarterfinals (7 cars left), lost to the eventual winner - a non-electronics car. If he would have had a light against me like he had the next two rounds, I would have taken him. But, there are no "ifs" in racing, right? The winner got $1200, I got back my entry fees and $5 towards fuel.

Three days of racing, 14 rounds won to 3 lost (out of 22 possible rounds), made it into the money each day, lost to the eventual class winner each day.

Re: Repeat performance

Wow that's a lot of rounds in 3 days. I did 14 passes including my T&T and time trial runs.

I always tell people that if you're in a points series, you don't have to win a single event all year to be a season champion. You just need to go a lot of rounds each race.

Friday was the Summit ET qualifying series I've been running for several years. One TT plus 7 rounds.

Saturday the Chevy show. 2 TT's, 6 rounds.

Today continuation of the Chevy show, no TT's, 4 rounds.

So, 20 runs down the track in 3 days. In the last round today, the car picked up after running slow, I dialed quicker than it would have run in the 3rd round (I backed off at the traps), I backed off again in the 4th after getting ahead, took .0067 stripe and broke out by .002. He was .007 better on the tree than I was (this was the same guy I ran in the semi's Friday night). I guess I needed my first round light, where my opponent was .110 and I was .001.

As for the season championship, here if you go 3 rounds every time out (typical 7 to win, Pro and Super Pro are often 8), you will be in the top 10. If you go at least 3 rounds every time out, and get to the final once or twice, you'll be at the top. I'm only 4 rounds out of first with 1 race left, if #'s 1-3 go out before and at least 4, 2, and 1 round(s), respectively, before me, I'll sew it up. I'll need some help, obviously. The good news is #1 typically only goes 2 or 3 rounds, his son was racing for him two weeks ago when he beat me in the final.

They just posted the standings. I figured something wrong - got my own points correct, actually - but they're listing me #3. Same spread as I figured between me and #'s 1 & 2, but I had what they're calling #5 with one more round than me. I know his car threw a rod in TT and he ran his wife's Cooper Mini, but he should have gotten points for showing up and the round he won in it, which would put him 1 round ahead of me.

They'll probably figure it out and correct it. Unless I really did get it wrong.
