Petition to help save Calgary's race facility

Big news story finally came out earlier this week. The city of Calgary is going to break the lease on the land that our motorsports facility sits on. As of now, we have 2 more seasons of racing then the tracks are being shut down. They're currently searching for a new location but have nothing yet. www.racecity.com has a 1/4 mile drag strip, 1/2 mile high banked paved oval and a 2 mile road course. The tracks are starting to get run down because of lack of investors who don't want to invest in something that doesn't have a long term stay. We have the local city alderman and the chief of police on our side. With a city population of 1 million people, we should have a motorsports facility.

We've set up an online petition and are trying to get as many people to sign it as possible.

why there surface is ****, most funny car guys know it, and wont race there because theres a bump at about the 1000' mark that likes to send cars into the wall. im up for saving race tracks so i signed the petition but if there goign to stay open they need to spend the money and fix the dam track. oh and BTW were they not on the verga of going broke?

Re: Petition to help save Calgary's race facility

It's not so much to save the track. There's nothing they can do to keep the city from taking the land. The city takes the land back in 2010 or takes it back in 2025 when the lease expires. Either way there's no future in it's current location. The main reason for the petition is to get the city to find another location to set up a new race facility. It would be the same thing as forcing a private golf course that leases city land to move because they want the land for something else.

The track was never going broke. The dragstrip doesn't make a lot of money but the road course and oval make enough to keep the track open. The old management let the track go into disrepair and a number of high dollar race events were lost due to rain outs which really hurts finances. Last year the fathers day race got rained out. Normally that race alone can pay the bills for the dragstrip for the season.

There are and have been investors who are willing to spend money on the facility but with no long term lease, it's not a worthwhile investment. If a new track location is found, it's possible there will be big investments. It would be nice to have a new facility ready to go before the 2010 season.

The 1000' bump is in the right lane. Even I feel it. There's an aquifer under the track in that location. Last year when they did some minor track resurfacing, they found the asphalt was very thin in some locations and when they tried to shave the track, they hit gravel.

Any money spent on the track for the next 2 seasons will be minor repairs to keep the tracks operating. That also includes the oval and road course.

So far the online petition is averaging 500-600 names per day. There are also hard copy petitions all over the city which are probably getting more than that.
