The new 383 is in

Well , made it to the track after a bad 10 days. Ribs are still plenty sore, didn't know if I'd be able to put the belts on. The first pass on the new motor was 6.667 with a 1.45 60 and 103.87 mph. That was the very best my old 383 ever went. It went faster every pass. By the end of the evening it ran 6.608 @104.78 with a 1.43 60. This motor pulls a lot harder on the big end than the old 383, but it was 5 years old. Only thing differant is the pistons, .200 dome compared to flat tops. I even used my old steel shim head gaskets. On Sunday it picked right up where it left off Sat night. It ran a 6.605 and 2 6.603 back to back. Pulled a real boner and had a .1798 red light. Guess what happened. I was so mad at myself I just loaded it, and poped a few beers. Tires were wore out anyways, put new ones on tonight. Was going to do it last week but ran out of time. Just got the breakin oil out Sat morning before going to the track. Oils still nice and clean so this motor might just make it a few rounds. My machinist was there Sat, hasn't had time to look at my 406 block yet. Even if it can be repaired, I'll run this 383 the rest of the season, and have the car certified this winter.

Re: The new 383 is in

Well the new tires helped a little bit. She ran high 6.47s and low 6.48s today @ 105+ with 1.40 60s. Track was a tad bit slick today, but over all I was happy till the first round. Was running a dragster his 5.15 to my 6.48. The A hole dubble bulbed me, and I tried to hurry and get in. Shouldn't have cause I got it in too far and red lit with a -.014. Live and learn I guess. I still think I'm spinning a little, going to try and hit the tires a little harder next time out.

Re: The new 383 is in

well his mind games worked then lol, I have double bulbed a few times by accident, usually caused by bright sunshine on the tree, but my reaction times usually suck so...oh well

Anyway, less tire spin is better, but looks decent with those times

Re: The new 383 is in

What really burns me though is you have to sit and wait for them to do all their crap and then they pull that on ya. Ya it worked. We run off of an auto start tree, and you don't have much time after you roll in when they do that. Maybe he got the same thing this afternoon. Hope so. This motor don't leave like my 406 did, maybe 1.39/1.40 is all it's going to do. I just talked to my son and he said the tire was biting, not spinning.

I thought Mid-State said they were going to firmly enforce courtesy staging? Guess that doesn't mean much, huh???? I know where you're coming from had some ja@#$ss do the same thing to me on my last race at CDP. I understand that accidents happen from time to time, and if I have ever done it in competition I make a point to go the opponent and let them know that it was an accident.

Re: The new 383 is in

Made it back to the track Sunday. my 60s are all over the place with this new engine. Unless the track is preped very well. I have had some new best times from this new engine however. 6.46 @106 +. I don't know if the extra power upset the suspension or the converter is going away. I moved the I/C 7" forward and 2" up, guess I'll find out this weekend. Last Sunday we had 87* and da 2900+ , it usally cools off and the air gets better this time of the year. Supposed to be around normal this week end. I ended up running the dragster that has been double bulbing me, but I didn't give him the chance Sun. Just as soon as he left I started my burn out and was prestaged when he was backing through the beams. Beat his -ss this time. 2nd round I drew another dragster, and had a .0110 light, he red lit, and I ran it out. 6.47@106.34. Put a 50 on the car for the next round and got a bike, had a .012 against his .019 he beat me by .0402. I have to get the 60s down, sure can't run S/PRO with bad 60s.

Re: The new 383 is in

way to go, still did ok. that is a very fair way to handle the problem with the dragster, good thinking. with high track temps it can be hard to get a hold of the track. maybe you need to loosen the front up more on slick days?

Re: The new 383 is in

I moved th I/C 7" forward and 2" higher. Going to try hitiing the tires a little harder this weekend. Just don't want a wheel stander. A foot wouldn't be too bad, but don't want no more.

Re: The new 383 is in

Well, that didn't do it. Accually made it worse. Left at 4400 on the second tt Sunday, and looked like the tire made about 3 revolutions from the hit. Don't make no sence. When I had the 406 in it, it was standing up, yet this motor runs a faster mph, an close to the same ET. Guess I'll go the other way for the final race of the season. We videoed every pass and the only pass it didn't spin, I red lit by .007. The track was in decent shape too. My sons car was with in .010 60s all day, but he's a 7.20 car. maybe I'll go back to the setup I have in his car, really didn't care for it when I ran it with my other 383. Maybe It's time for a new converter.

Re: The new 383 is in

It is possible that the torque peaks are at different rpms and the 383 and current converter didnt like that rpm. how old is the converter?

Re: The new 383 is in

Last race of the season for me. Got the 4 link sorted out. Shortened and lowered the I/C, the car hooked great, even on a marginal track. 1.39 60 leaving @ 3800 on the 1st tt she ran a 6.473 @ 105+. So I bumped it to 4400 and she ran a 1.37 60@ 6.45 @ 106+. I'm pretty happy with those passes. 1st round I got a altered he dialed 6.75 I 6.45, told my son to check it because it didn't seem right. It was. he had a .004 against my .012, my shifter didn't make the shift and I hit the limiter, still ran a 6.48@ 105+. The tree had a malfuntion so they told us both to return for the 2nd. Drawed the same guy, he had another .004 I had .019, had to shift by hand but the car broke up a little over 6000 in both gears. When the break up occurs the tac goes to 0 then back up. Back fireing like crazy. Even did it on the return road, my day was over, I won 2nd round. Some guys were saying there was fire shooting out about 4 ft when it breaking up. Was talking to one of my buddies about that run and he knew the guy in the altered. I was in his class 40+ years ago in Jr high. He has the car on a throttle stop because of a heart condition, can't get a license because of the blood thinner. I didn't need to hear that. So I guess my 406 will be going into my sons car when I get it back together.
