2 broken wheel studs....

Anyone have studs break off for no apparent reason? Noticed that 2 of mine broke, side by side on the rear of my car. Moser 12 bolt with the long studs, i assume the use of the 2/8 thick wheel spacers could be the culprit, but i never imagined, just glad that is all that happened before i noticed.

The wheels are a 6.5 BS 15x10, and they would not clear the ls1 rear calipers so i used the 3/8 spacers. They are welds with the deep shanks. broke off pretty deep.

Anyone experience this?

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

Correction, they are 7/32 I think, have to check, might be 5/16, but it has me ready to change all the unbroken studs as well.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

You never said what size studs. Spacers are bad. 7/16" or 12mm wheel studs on the drive are even worse. 1/2" studs should be the minimum.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

years ago i had all 5 studs break off and lost a wheel, on a hard 1st to 2nd shift. yup, i was useing wheelspacers and stock studs, with slicks.
this was in a 2nd gen camaro, and luckily it had traction bars, cause the car didnt drop too far down on that side. it sure made alot of sparks though, lol.
your lucky only 2 broke. id have to agree, step up to some better/stronger studs. see if you can make some wheel clearance and lose the spacers.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

i went a whole bunch of 1.32-1.34 60's with stock size studs and no spacers, fwiw. never broke anything. later swapped to 1/2" studs and went a bunch of 1.30-1.32 60's on those with no problems.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

I'm sure it is the spacers, just curious if anyone else had this happen.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

Definitely the spacers, and probably didn't have them 100% torqued to spec of 100 ft/lbs when they snapped. I have 5/8" studs now for this very reason, I like my perfect paint job

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

5/8 studs here and we do sometimes run spacers(spare wheels), but they are billet specifically for the 5/8 studs & hub center.

I've broken 1/2 studs w/o spacers, two were MIA after a 146mph hit and two more were bent/twisted back.......lucky day I guess, glad we check air pressure before heading up for the next pass.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

Without spacers would have really confused me, yours were stock when broken? I am not sure what brand the pieces are on the moser, but I will see if I can go ahead and safe remove more material from the calipers so I do not have to use them. The stock 16s I use with slicks at the track of course do not need spacers, just the welds with the street tires.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

All of us who use 5/8" studs do so because we're at a power level where 1/2" studs are not enough but that doesn't mean a 10-12 second car doesn't need them. It's just extra security knowing you won't snap a stud and if you do, you have more serious issues to deal with. I've seen 1/2" studs break also. Only seen one car at the track snap all 5 studs on one wheel just as it launched.

Ditch the stock studs and upgrade to at least 1/2". To go to 5/8", you'll need to get the axles redrilled and tapped as the studs screw into the axle flange and have a nut on the backside to hold them in.. It's usually easier to buy new axles predrilled for 5/8" drive studs. Drilling and tapping an axle flange isn't as easy as it sounds but it could be done.

Re: 2 broken wheel studs....

Just going to eliminate the spacers, it is no longer taken to the track. Street duty.
