Re: Track and Street car build

After spending a lot of time figuring out the proper overlays for the factory gauges, my speedometer stopped working. Well these are what I really wanted to begin with just wasn't able to afford them. Still not sure I can now. But it's what I wanted.

Re: Track and Street car build

Haven't gotten around to the gauges or fixing the leaking intake manifold yet.

Been playing with my $750 beater. Removed a bunch of mangled old race car sheet metal to put on new race car sheet metal to go beat up. Haha... Before I hang it tho, it needs a trip to the truck wash to see the pressure washer and a squirt of paint on the cage and chassis. But it's fun not worrying too much on how nice this one is.

You should join us (race or spectate) this fall at the Big Willow Big Bore Bash, your car would fit right in.

Oh wow! Yeah that looks like an awesome event! Thanks for that. Ill push for race ready. But might not get that all done in time as work has me pretty busy. But I'd definitely like to take the car there even if just for show and see all the other cool cars/race cars.

First step in trying to make the stock engine look a little better. Relocating the heater control valve and the smog air diverter valve.

Now you can see and remove the passenger side valve cover.

I went a little out of order of what I want and need to get done. But I only had one day this weekend and I knew the airbox would be a days work. So there it is.

Great job!
What's next instruments?

This O ring 2 ounce filter cover paper weight seems to stay tight.
They sell a shorter one for hood clearance.

Too big to go down the carb .

Re: Track and Street car build

Thank you. Next I want to do the instruments, BUT... I need to pull the intake manifold as the front corners are weeping coolant. I don't need that to get worse. And while I'm there I got some roller tip rockers for it and new pushrods. Also a new distributor, coil and plug wires should be here Tuesday. So that's the next job. I'm planning for next weekend on that.
Thanks on thumb screw style air cleaner nut. That's definitely something I'm going to be needing.

Taking it apart now.

Glad Im doing this now. the intake gasket was not looking good. If I had waited much longer I think it could have gotten pretty bad.

Not too bad looking inside for as many miles as it has

Got the intake all cleaned up and repainted. Throttle body is clean and ready to go. Gotta get up early tomorrow to start putting it back together.

Most of the way back together. Probably would have gotten more done if I wasn't out so late at the races last night at Orangeshow Speedway. But gotta get my fix.

Spark plug wires loomed by zip tie. Valve Covers fit

Some heat wrap replacing the stock crappy plastic loom.

Even with the stock manifolds I think it's looking pretty good.

Got it all back apart again. Gotta Time Cert the end intake bolt holes. So I took out the lifters and gave them a good cleaning just cuz I was there. I've got it all cleaned and ready to go back together now. Just gotta pick up the Time Certs from Specialty Fasteners tomorrow.

Super clean! Car is looking really good. Yeah stainless hood pins are the best way to go so they don't rust on you.

Ok got my Time Sert kit. Don't feel like doing it tonight so probably tomorrow. Then start putting It back together again. This time it will Torque down properly and actually seal.

I don't understand your air filter. That shroud is closed off and just starves the engine?

No, when the hood is closed there is about an 1.25" slot the width of the pan that cool air can suck in from the cowl. Basically cowl induction.

It's kinda hard to see when the hood is closed in photos. But if you see here the pan extends over the top of the cowl with raised sides. And I've cut the hood seal to allow air in.

All back together. Ran out of daylight, so one day after work I'll check the timing and adjust the valves. But should be close. The Time-Serts went in super easy. I was stressing over them as the corner holes I needed them were counter bored already. But it wasn't an issue.

Since it's been too hot to be out side here at 109 with 40%+ humidity Ive been staying indoors. So I started playing with my new gauge cluster.

So was having a sluggish starter issue. Especially when hot. Well I found previous owner had only a 10 gauge wire for the main starter wire and it is cooked on the starter end. So now it has a 1 gauge wire and the starter spins it up no problem cold or hot.

Paint isn't done to put decals on the painted surfaces yet. But since I'm driving it some I thought I should at least represent for the guys that helped me the most on the glass in the meantime. Couple others I don't have small decals for, like Wilwood (but you can see their name thru the wheels.) And Five Star Bodies. Didn't get a deal with them, but they did go out of their way to get me panels that had been out of major product and out of the catalog since the early 90's.

You really shouldn't build a race car without a cup holder. Racing one handed while holding a drink is dangerous.

Got the fine line tape out. Finally getting around to the white stripe. I'm stoked to get this done, it's really going to make the paint scheme look better. Also put the inside windshield supports back in.

Got the masking all done

Scuffed paint and started priming and painting.

Still gotta go back and do the lower stripe on the sides. I just wanted to get the harder part done first.

If you are in the area Saturday we'll have a couple 3rd Gens racing and many other vintage race cars.

Having fun at Willow Springs International Raceway this weekend. Found the computer has a 85mph limiter on it. Gotta look into how to get around that now.

Yeah for sure it was. Could've used that extra mph on the front and back stretch for sure. Did my best to not hold up the fast guys with race tires and no speed limiters.

Haven't gotten it in yet. Been super busy lately with working shows for the company I work for.
I plan on taking the car to the SCCA track day at California Speedway this Saturday so there's another killed day. Haha I'll get to it. I Really want it in the car. Ive got it sitting on the shelf ready.

Got some good photos from the track photographer. It was fun driving it all the way there. The guy at the gate was shocked I drove it, and even more shocked I haven't been hassled by the police. yet...

So much fun!

Pretty cool to park in the cup car garage at California Speedway for SCCA track days.

Super fun day. Great people. But boy are Firestone street tires the wrong tire for this. I'll have to take my Hoosiers next time I take it out. When I walked to the back there was a black mist all over it. I thought it was oil until I swiped my finger across it and found it was all tire rubber. Haha oh well.

Excellent photos, looks right at home!
2 different tracks in 2 weekends good job.
I think it's ready for race numbers. (at least at the track)
What number is your Camaro?

Yeah I've got them but I want to put them on some magnetic sheet so I can take them off for the street.

Number is 51. Couple reasons why, back when I was involved in Jeep speed desert racing in the 1700 class I was randomly assigned 1751. So I thought I'd keep with that. Plus my dad's 57 Chevy stock car is number 50. So I thought the next consecutive number would be cool. Then I thought about it and I always loved the look of the #51 black Exxon car from movie days of thunder so I went with it.

So I think I really need a better transmission before I do too much more. It's not real happy with all that abuse. I'm thinking a tremec 5 speed for it. So gotta look into that now.
