OK, is this possible and how

OK, I talked to my mechanic about my current cluster setup in my ride. I got that huge f**kin' fuel guage and no tach and them dummy lights. I am looking to get a new 140MPH cluster with tach and all the non-dummy lighted guages ie: battery,temp etc. Can this be installed into my ride and how can it be done, mechanic says no way and I don't believe him. Someone out there please prove me right. If not, looks like I am doing the after market tach

Someone correct me if i'm wrong...

GM only used one wiring harness (in the dash) so your car should have the connectors and all the wiring in the dash already.

I'd still get the aftermarket tach....nothing beats a monsterous Autometer tach with a shift light that could be used to provide light for a small country.

I am pretty sure 402 is right. Though the normal swap is just from the 85 speedo and full cluster to the rarer 140. Not sure how the other ones swaps out.

Wheee, after market stuff here I come. After chatting with Chev I learned this is possible but not easy or cheap. Since I do not have the wiring setup on my car, I am stuck with the current setup. Well maybe I can figure out what to do with this huge fuel guage. Any advice on aftermarket tachs?

BS! I can hook up a factory tach in your dash in about 10 min. All it is is a power wire and a signal wire. The signal wire plugs into the distributor next to the "BATT" connector. All it is is a female spade connector with a cute plastic jacket. The fuel gauge will be the same, just connect the two wires together, the sender wire from the tank will control either type. What other guages are you wanting?

Arghhh! Damn dealers... OK, maybe I am not letting people know exactly what the situation is. When I bought the car it has a base cluster setup, 85 speedo, Oil/Temp/Battery dummy lights, and a huge fuel guage. What I am looking to do is convert it to the 140 or even the 85 cluster with tach, battery, fuel and etc NON dummy light setup (Sensors). Talking to mechanics and dealer they say I do not have this setup in my car. She is not an IROC just a basic SC, I know I can rig up the tach but would a stock cluster (not aftermarket) say bought off ebay work correctly? Hope this helps, maybe I just don't know any smart mechanics

The speedo is a direct swap. The last issues are the water temp, volt, and the oil PSI.

Others...HELP!

Now I'm just guessing at this but, the dummy lights are controled by resistors. That would mean that when the value of the voltage in the signal wire goes above/below value "X" then it would turn on the light...(If I'm right)... Now the stock IROC cluster would interpret the signals from the same sensors but instead of turning on a light it would show you it's interpretation by moving the needle on the guage face.

If that is in fact how the lights work then swaping the cluster would be as simple as connecting the correct wires together. Those should be all color coded too...
