Anyone know a good transmission shop?

Anyone know a good shop that can completely rebuild a 700R4 and install it? My girlfriend is building her 92Z28 and she wants a fresh tranny. I dont have a core yet but I will soon. I'm hoping to get the 92Z28 running ASAP. I'm hoping I can barrow a core from the shop. Anyone know any reputable places?

oh yeah I forgot about them. My friend got his trans rebuilt there kind of recently. I think his name here on thirdgen is Blackbari. Very good place & always busy though lol! Guess that tells you that they're good. I also recommend them.

I ended up going to Kiyos after talking to Ken at PacAuto (thats where I get my alignments done). Wayne at Kiyos is a cool guy and he agree'd to rebuild Tracy's transmission and even install it. But I gotta provide the core, so looks like it'll be another week before Wayne can start on the trans.

Good to hear Shawn. Did you still need my help transporting transmissions around? I'm always willing to help.....you just gotta let me know ahead of time so I can figure out who can watch my daughter.

Thanks for the offer Anthony, I'll let you know!!

It is going to be an OEM rebuild, nothing for race, and the quote was somewhere under $1000 inc install, I'm thinking probably between $900 and $1000. We also priced transmissions through catalogs (built to handle 400hp+) and they were around $1500 shipped. I tried to talk Tracy into it, but she wants to stick with OEM quality and have the work done locally. The main thing is, she dosnt want me to do any installs, guess she dosnt trust me LOL

No problem Shawn.....maybe you can ride with me again & I'll do my mini wanna-be drifts with my truck again while transmission fluid leaks in the back from the trans! Fun stuff ...

You should at least convince Tracy in getting slight upgrades for the trans, like the corvette valve body & servo.

Kiyo's

Hi Shawn, I'm the one who was going to buy your 700r4 almost a year ago but decided to have mine rebuilt. I went to Camaroku's shop with you to look at it.

Kiyo's rebuilt my '88 IROC's 700R4, and I like it. They do great work, just don't expect it to be done fast . It took them one month to do my car. It feels more like a stock rebuild. I'm sure they used TransGo stuff, but it doesn't feel like it. It sure isn't GM smooth so you know it's shifting.

Any updates on the work done at Kiyos? Just in case anyone else needs to have a 700-R4 overhauled. What's the actual name/telephone of the place?

Sorry Ed, but I didnt even take it there yet. The trans is still in my 91Z, need to start my T56 swap before I drop it. But the IROC has been broken for so long and taking up my only stall, really put me behind schedule. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.

On a side note, I promise I'm gonna stop by soon and drop of your $50, been so busy I forgot. *slaps forhead* Sorry!!

Heh, no need to K-1 yourself ... it is a quality of social grace that you have the courtesy to remember and respond!

So, in our collective TGO wisdom and real-world experience, what are the top two or three shops to do auto trans work here on Oahu?

Was it built equivalent to a ProBuilt? What was the cost ... err... what would it cost a stranger like me to get a 700R4 overhauled to street-strip standards?

Mine was done at Kiyo's

Took my '88 IROC to Kiyo's last year. Took them a little over one month for them to do the trans rebuild. If you need it fast, I don't think you should expect it. Wayne is cool. They did a great job on a stock rebuild. The quality work is what they do and did so on my '78 Cutlass with TH350 years ago.

It's on Queen street, phone # 591-8481 When you go there, expect lots of cars in their shop.

Great resource for Bay Area people -- is there any way Hawaii people can use the link?

Re: Anyone know a good transmission shop?

Ok, here's the hard one. How about transmission shops in Hawaii? I'm lookin at puttin between 400-500hp to the wheels. I need a 700r4 that will hold the power. Money isn't the issue, it's reputable shops out here. I was told that the turbo400 would hold up, but it weighs a bunch more. So I'm going to stick with my trans, just want it beefed up. Any ideas?? I know most of you are in Cali/Oregon/Washington, so this might take awhile to get a reply, but it's worth the try. Thanks guys.

Given the high prices of rebuilding trans in Hawaii, I opted to purchase a Pro-Built 700R4 and 2600 stall converter for my '92 Z28 a couple of years ago and have it installed on-island. So far it's worked perfectly.

Re: Anyone know a good transmission shop?

Yeah, I'm on the fence about it, mostly because it costs so much to ship out here. So do I rebuild, or buy rebuilt and shipped? Not really sure on that one. It's worth looking into more, I want to make sure my money is going to the right place. I decided I'm buying this engine. http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/45400/10002/-1
they have it for sale out here at Ron's performace center. No shipping charge. SO, my hp range just opened up, this says 320, well depending on what I put to it, the max could be 380-4xx. Thanks for the advice Duck. Hurry up and get out here man, I need a brother 3rd gen rollin next to me. Haha.

Re: Anyone know a good transmission shop?

Ok, so plans changed, and btw, I looked into the bowtie overdrive trans that was for sale in craigslist, it was only a level one.
The new plan is 383 stroker, so I'm going to invest my money in the level 2 trans from bowtieoverdrives.com freight is said to be able $150, so that's not too bad, thanks for the help though. It was worth looking into.
