Counting cars
Hey guys,
just wondering if anyone caught the episode last night with the 86 IROC they restored? I thought they did a great job on it but I didn't see enough to justify the 35k to 40k they quoted the lady. What do you think? I'd like to hear others opinions on it.

Re: Counting cars
I watched it last night, and was actually talking with a co-worker about it this morning. From being in the repair/resto business, I see it being a realistic figure. Just the drivetrain alone could have sucked 10k. Hard to say without seeing the entire parts list, but assuming it was done right, the price seems fair.

Re: Counting cars
i caught it, i thought they did an amazing job but that is a lot of money for that car but it was more of just doing it for herself to keep the car forever. you figure paint and body work anywhere from 10k to 15k the motor was probably 8k or so all new interior rims tires n all labor its about right lol when you love a car you ll do anything

Yeah, but they yanked out the TPI and switched to a carb. I'm not a fan of that myself.

I love my cars but if someone quoted me 35-40k to restore them I'd laugh my way to another shop or take that money and use it for a down payment on a ZL1!

I was really excited to see what they would do for $40,000. Then when I saw it I was dissapointed. They didn't even upgrade to leather. The only real custom upgrade was they got a double din stereo in there. For the same price she could have gotten a great used Corvette. I thought I'd be jealous of it compared to what I'm trying to finish up on mine, but mine is just as good and didn't cost anywhere near that price

Re: Counting cars
I knew someone was going to post this! I like how they car turned out, and that they kept the body and decals original looking, but I also think that 35-40k is a little pricey.

I was going to post about it too. I agree that if broken down the 35-40 thousand may not be real high but I expected it to be a bit more. I am glad the outside remained stock looking.

I agree for what they did was not worth 35k-40k she still had stock rims, as a shop for that price you would of thought about rims unless SHE wantewd to keep them but then again thats prob why they quoted her at those prices, i mean a kill switch isnt that hard to install

watch the show and for 30-40k i think was really high to just freshen up and paint the wheels black thats just my opinion but if i had 40k to put in my car i would have a BA car and it wouldnt have stocker wheels painted black its kinda cheesy and lame and she got rob lol i could justify black painted stockers if you had one B.A. LS Swap SBC Turbo or Supercharger sumthing but everyone has there different taste i guess

If someone else was building the motor from the ground up, yes you can get into that range depending on parts used.
Material alone:
Forged Crank - $500 (Ohio Crankshaft)
Forged Rods - $200 (Ohio Crankshaft)
Pistons - $580 (Ross Pistons)
Cam - $240
Lifters - $200
Heads - $930 (assembled)
Intake - $165
Carb - $300
There's over 3K there in parts and you still have to get a distributor, coil, wires, bearings, plugs gaskets, and then the labor to assemble it....

Yes I know if you use all high end pieces you can get to 8k but he quoted her 420 hp. So that being said what do you think they did? Build an all forged high end 383 or order a 4k fully dressed crate engine?

I didn't see the show but checked for upcoming listings so I could view it.
For those interested, as mentioned above, the show is called 'Chasing Cars', it's on the 'History Channel' and for me (Massachusetts EST) it is airing at 10:30 tomorrow night (09/06).

I agree about being disappointed. WAY too much money. If you're going to put that much into a car it might as well be a 1st gen. For 40K it should either be super wild/aggressive, or showroom stock down to the screws and stickers.
The work was nice, but I've been doing my own work forever so I've no idea what shops charge.
I only caught the reveal part of the show, but at least it looked like she got a 9".

Re: Counting cars
I recorded this but havent watched it yet. I have built up some pretty sweet Camaros the last few years and I dont have 40,000 in any of them...closest to that is my car but it still needs a paint job. I cant see spending that kind of money on a thirdgen when a lot of us here can do more with less money.

i agree yea the show is kinda of wierd tho they drive around and offer money to them then fix them up and sell them for some type of profit you just dont drive around and all of a sudden find old muscle cars sitting in the driveway then knock on his door offering to buy it
40,000 in a thirdgen i want porshe quality leather custom lol

Re: Counting cars
I watch these shows for the cars but I'd never take mine there. If they act the same when they're actually working on a car like they do on camera, I don't want them any where near mine. Counting Cars, Gas Monkey Garage, etc, I can't believe they do quality work. They are trying to be so cool and hip they actually come off as comic book characters. Tearing down a car and rebuilding it five days? No, not here. Then charging 40 grand? Wow. Chip Foose may be able to do it but he has an army of engineers, technicians, mechanics, and vendors who specialize in what they do.
That lady's IROC was in bad shape (stolen twice) but really all they did was put a stroker 383 in it and put it back together. Oh and install a kill switch. How much can a 12v toggle switch cost in Vegas?

Re: Counting cars
I was going to post about this yesterday, but did not know if this was the right place since this forum does not have a chat section like it should IMO. I think Danny is a cool dude-always liked him on Pawn Star's and evern said to my Ex-you watch they will give him his own show. I think they do nice work, but when I heard them tell her $35-40K I almost fell off the couch. I love 3rd gen's, but no way would I put $40k in one and it was not even a T-top car. The wheels looks a bit bigger than stock to me and it looked like they lowered the car, but yeah-that did not look like a $40k restore. I know stuff ads up fast on a project, but still-she must have loved that car. I was not super impressed about the carbed 383 as that seemed like the easy way out for a faster engine. I would love to know all the spec's on that car-like was the trans rebuilt, rear end, What gears, what went into a 40k project. also the car was very rought, but being in Vegas I bet it was rust free.

Re: Counting cars
Still, most shows will quote the list price and from GM Parts Direct they list a 383 for $6632 without intake, carb, ignition, brackets accessories and exhaust manifolds. So who knows. Still the thing is, and I agree with you, that you can get these motors cheaper.

Re: Counting cars
Watched the show featuring the IROC-Z, and although the finished car looked good, the price was way too high, IMO.
I think these types of shows are more soap operas than shows for gearheads, with dudes arguing about money and what the other guy bought and all that stuff. I guess they want as much drama so the shows appeal to as many people as possible. I'd like to see them actually working on the cars and sharing what it is they do, instead of just brief "Before and After" clips.

Re: Counting cars
If you want to buy a rest-rod let some one else build it for a customer, then when they get tired of it you can get it for half of what it cost to build. Happens all the time, build a car and with parts and labor (around $100 an hour) you can have a 40K car rather quickly. Watch Mecum and look at the 30-40s custom roadsters selling at 30-40K, they probably cost around 60 plus when they were built, usually more into a car then you can sell it for

Re: Counting cars
Its a TV show, dont expect everything that is said to be the truth. You guys should know this.
That being said, the entire interior and lots of the exterior was replaced with brand new GM parts. That = Expensive. Couple that with high dollar labor prices, lights and cameras and you can easily be in that range. They never did say how much it was at the end, only the original estimate.
Either way no matter what is done to these cars they seem to catch 20k tops on a good day, throwing that much money into an IROC at this point in time is a very poor financial decision. Period

I watched it too. When I heard $35K or $40K.... No Way! I would have left just on the fact that there is a $5000 variable. When do they come in $5000 under budget? You knew $40K was going to be the number and I cannot see where all the money came in. I could go buy a super low mileage, well optioned original for half that.
I would much rather had the GTO Vert or the 64 Impala (Gas Moneky did) for that kind of money. Sentimental in one thing but stupid is.... spending $40K to restore a beat up car to worse than original.

Re: Counting cars
You guys crack me up. First as pointed out this is a television show. I would not believe any of it.
Second of all, you guys all forget labor. Going rate these days is $80-120 / hr. Just two guys working on it full time for just a week is already $8000. I know if I "charged myself" that rate, my car would easily be into the 6 figures.

Modifying ANY car is truly a poor financial decision. Most of the time when individual people restore cars and sell them for a profit most are not counting their labor into that figure.

Re: Counting cars
I looked at the rerun for the 9" rear etc. after it was mentioned here. It is obvious to me it isn't a 3rd gen underbody. I looked at the floor and for the torque arm.
As stated above it is just a TV show and I would bet that the network or show paid for alot of that 35-40 G she was told. However it is good publicity for us 3rd genners'.
I did notice that many of the car values they throw around do seem to be somewhat in line if the work done is high quality. I also like that they do not get to buy every car they ask about.
However I am not interested in watching it again. As someone already said; I would have liked seeing some of the work done not, just before and after pics, for the most part.

Re: Counting cars
Well they did replace just about everything on that car, A complete interior not cheap , new hood, fenders gfx bumpers, All that was trashed. I mean did you see how far out those fenders where, new wheels and tires, And the car did get lowered , I'm not defending the cost I do think it was high , But I'm sure they spent a lot of time getting the body straight so they could lay down that deep black paint, even the door jams shined like the rest of the body. And that is California and prices there are much high than what others have listed, Then think of the fact its a high profile custom shop now and even higher prices to the factor And that's its a show And the owner of the shop is looking for more customers to pad his pockets with, and using the show to make people think thats the going price for that kind of work. As for the show its really not a good show, to much talking and bs then showing actual work

Re: Counting cars
I like the show a lot. That price on that car was super high but for certain reason. 1: He has to pay the guys that worked on it. At least 3. 2; Had to buy a **** load of new parts for it. That car was destroyed. and 3: Its a well known high class shop in Vegas, so the price will be high wither way.

Re: Counting cars
For everyone saying the condition, labor, and parts justifies the price did you not see the 67 mustang he just restored for rick from pawn stars? The condition was a hundred times worse and that only cost Rick 22k. I know he got the buddy discount but nobody gets a 13k to 18k discount no matter who you are!

Re: Counting cars
Why is everyone complaining about the price. Its her car? Her money... she can do what she wants, if she's rich 40K is nothing to her. The car was obviously sentimental to her and she wanted to fresh up the car. I was very happy with the car, it looked killer to me. The shop could have turned the car into a disgrace like most other car shows by dressing it up with 22 in chrome wheels or putting a custom interior. Im not much of a 86 fan due to the tacky third brake light deal, but a brand new paint job, stock wheels painted black, with tinted windows and a high performance motor is what made the car stand out. Plus the interior was stock, so for a car that looks really cool in stock form with everything done to it, i think she got her moneys worth. Plus that cool kill switch they installed for her.

Re: Counting cars
He took advantage of her because she had a sentimental attachment to the car, And She agreed to it I'm sure He made it that price on TV so he could justify to the next customer or hope the next customer see's the show and can again get that price, If I would ever send my car to be rebuilt I'd get appraisels from at least 4 shops,. And that show needs to show more work being done and less jacking around, I'm still going to watch the show, It is a car show.
