Another turbocharged 3rd gen coming down the pike! Updated 9-22-03
I took delivery of a 3rd gen Formula this weekend along with a nice bucket of parts which include a turbonetics T72, Innovative wastegate, 3/8" header flanges, 1 5/8" tubing for primaries, collectors and a host of misc tubing to get this project going.
I will have many photos to post when this is all done. This wont be as "race" as my old setup as the owner wanted to retain motor mounts.
Stay tuned. This one should be interesting!

Nice work! :hail: I'm always impressed to see a turbo setup becasue I know how much hard work and fabrication go into it....

How in the world do you install, change or check plugs with the tight clearances you got there? Somebodies got patience!!

The tubes appear to mostly stay above the flange, which actually makes plugs and bolts a fairly simple proposition for anyone with long arms (even if they’re big, there’s plenty of room undernieth if you can reach it).
Guido, are you going for equal lengths or any kind of tuning there or just whatever gets them all there? I’m sure I’ll see later, but which way are you planning on running the crossover (things get tight in a hurry in front of the engine when you have accessories and intercooler plumbing)?
That’s mild steel, isn’t it?

Just whatever gets them in there and allows good access to the plugs, and header bolts.
The turbo is going on the passenger side and the crossover is running under the balancer.

Looks good so far!
Why are you running the crossover by the balancer? Couldn't you just use the stock routing ant bring the pipe up where the down pipe would be on the passenger side? That way there is room for the intercooler piping. That is what I plan on doing.

Would be interesting to see how the finished job would transfer onto another car. I'm hinting here...
Also, are they made of mild steel?
Thanks

They are mild steel.
I have a feeling that a car with power steering would be a little more difficult to fit these onto. And I still have to do the other header yet too.
If someone has AC, power steering, etc all that its going to be a chore. LOL Willing to give it a shot sometime though. LOL

Yea, you just hit the nail on the head (the reason that I was asking). If you have the PS pump there you end up running out of room trying to run around the balancer up there and you start trying to decide how close to the pitman arm you can get before causing clearance issues and about moving the lower radiator hose to keep clear of the idler on the other side… shouldn’t be an issue if you’ve got the lower accessories gone (PS and smog pump).
I did at one point make a PS bracket that gets rid of most of the factory abortion that seems to cover the whole driver’s side of the engine and makes room and keeps the PS there, but clearances are still a bit close for comfort.
If I had confidence that heat wouldn’t cause problems with the oil pan gasket I’d do something a little different. Run the drivers side like stock (you could use a normal header or manifold…), run the crossover under the pan thought it’s space and then make a turn under the motor mount on the passenger side and up. There’s enough room there that you wouldn’t have to move anything but the tranny cooler lines, of course, you’d probably end up putting a solid mount on the passenger side to keep from melting things (rubber might work with some heat wrap on the tube, poly won’t).
With some creativity that could be made to work around the factory AC if you were really a masochist.
Without AC and if you’re not going for any specific tuning with the manifold/header, just make the passenger side a log with an inlet on the bottom between 4 and 6 and save all the packaging hassles. (with AC I don’t think you’ll have enough room for a down pipe if you run it this way)
Looks like fun.

Yea, I’m fairly certain that that wouldn’t fit with a PS pump installed, but it would be close.
Correct me if I’m wrong but that appears to be a PS box without the PS pump. How is that thing to drive like that (I’m assuming that the lines coming out the top are probably just looped together or something)?
Is that a prefabed collector or is that ‘home made?’
Looks pretty sweet

It is a prefabbed collector. Ive made a collector before, but it was a PITA. It takes a lot of hammering to get it right! LOL

I’ve driven a rack and pinion car done like that and it was no big deal. We’ve also pulled a ’70 Cadillac coupe Deville after pulling the 500ci out of it (obviously, no pump left there) and as long as it was rolling it was fine.

Guido,
Who's car is this? Does it belong to a board member?
Hope there are more cars to come. I'm hoping you'll get to the stage where you can make them from a jig.

Oh, I'm sure that you can make it all fit if you have infinite money and time...
Mounting a pump with no reservior would be fairly easy, but you'd probably get stuck with making all the remote stuff custom, since the the gm parts don't even like the heat under a stock f-bodies/vettes hood, much less if you add a turbo...

If hes not worried about retaining power steering, just get an S10 manual box, put on the F-body pitman arm, and bolt it on. Thats what I'm doing on my project (not installed yet). Should gain a little clearance around the box itself, too, since its smaller than a power box.

Guido, where do you buy all your header tubing, flanges, collectors, etc? I know several places sell that sort of stuff, but I figured you probably could reccomend someone who has good service, selection, and prices.
