twin turbo kit for $520?!?

Found this on ebay;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy...ayphotohosting

Wow, that was really cheap! 520 for the whole kit?!? And I always thought the roots 122 blower was the cheapest boost one could get...hmm

Now, how about a kit like that, at 520, add a pulled good running 305 for $100 or free,(since it has so low compression) stab in a turbo cam, leave heads stock, fab up a pressurehousing to cover the stock 750 quadrajet, add a decent manifold, and route/bend the rest of the exhaust yourself.

Would be very low buck atleast! And if you screw up, and blow the shortblock, just add another free/$100 305 until you get it right. would be a neat way to learn to run a turbocar without the huge initial outlay. Then step it up gradually.

Thoughts?

Re: twin turbo kit for $520?!?

Sure, it's not totally complete, but those types of things one can fab up to save a buck, not that hard either. This should beat the snot out of any $299 electric "supercharger" anyway, cause those dont work at all. Comparativly, given this isnt that much more cash, I'd say it could be an ok deal.

Re: twin turbo kit for $520?!?

That is definitely an SSAutochrome kit. Personally I like mine although it is the one that has the swept forward headers not the block huggers. Despite what most people say the quality of these kits is actually quite good, or at least mine is, so I see no reason why people slap the cheap junk label on them when they have never actually seen one let alone ever actually run one. I say go for it it will make a nice little project and you will have a twin turbo small block to put into something or other.

Re: twin turbo kit for $520?!?

I actually made a massive post about this "respect for a turbo kit". Look there for some info, I recommend if your going to get the kit, you get it directly from www.ssautochrome.com. the headers are the good swept forward ones, and the quality seems to be better.

I'm trading mine along with some other stuff to some guy for a weiand 177 with a air scoop, I think it'd be a better investment, plus its good quality along with good power, I'm thinking it'll make about 400 hp out of my 305, I've got 255-285 right now.

But in all honesty, don't buy the kit from ebay, either go with the one direct from www.ssautochrome.com or attempt to make your own, not that hard.

Chinese made parts = most performance parts.. Scat, eagle, cat, and so on.

The chinese have been beating us for years. The only thing we have to offer here is overpriced products due to liberal unions.

Oh man, i'm glad someone said this before I had to... I'm all about "made in America", *if it's a better product* but when it's the same product, only 200% marked up due to "union labor", and much higher pay rates, screw that.
*cough* no hard feelings to those *good* employees in skilled trades and in unions, it's the bad apples that give a bad name to the rest...
err anyway,

Whats with those headers? Is that little pipe welded on supposed to drive the turbines?

Nah, the big square hole is for the turbine. The little pipe appears to be for an external wastegate.

I wonder what the specs are for those turbos. They are listed as GT3071 units. I am guessing that they are off-shore reproduction pieces. Notice that one of the IC inlets is in the same endtank as the outlet. Either that is a direct in-to-out for one compressor, or that IC has a plate internally to steer the air downward and then back up through the second half of the IC. I would question the seller about this.

America products vs. Off-shore products.........everyone has there own opinion on that.

I don't know which kit you were looking at, but the one in the link has three tanks. Two on the bottom, where each turbo will feed into and a third that runs accross the entire length of the IC to act as a collector.

On the IC design you mentioned, where there is an end tank on either end, with two inlets on one tank, you run both turbos into this same tank and the the other end to the IC.

If you look at the IC in the link you will see that one small pipe feeds into one tank on the bottom. Two pipes are on the top tank. One small and one large. A normal setup is to feed one tank with two small pipes and one tank with a large pipe out. Look at the OD of the pipes on the endtanks. It looks odd.

Re: twin turbo kit for $520?!?

The intercooler has two inlets on the far right, one is obvious but the other is a little harder to see.

The two outlets on the left side - I'm sure that the smaller one is for a BOV.

Another pic

Re: twin turbo kit for $520?!?

Thank you. I missed the other 90* inlet on the bottom. I thought the small straight pipe on the top of the tank was an inlet also. That actually looks like a decent IC with that design for endtanks.
