The infamous T51R mod

Lets be real, the turbo scene is flooded with options that have come down in price the last 10yrs. Budget turbo builds have become almost a stablemate for making power cheaply on any platform. As a kid in my early and late teens the Supras and Skylines were known for their insane turbo noises. When I first did my turbo build, getting a budget turbo with an anti-surge..race cover etc was nowhere in range of what I could afford and you had to pretty much go with the big brand names. Now we have soo many shall I say..offshore brands and companies milling inlets has made things more budget friendly.I had my original ON3 turbo 78/75 to get my feet wet. It did its job but it was soo quiet it did bug me, I tried the 84mm billet wheel t4 and that was still not upto par at full boost. I was happy with the performance but I wanted the car to sound more menacing. As ***** as it sounds..like people buying cams just for the chop, our male egos need to be stroked sometimes. I did more research about what really makes the noise I was after from a proper antisurge..the pros vs cons between the bullet hole style or slotted, running with or without bov with a manual car etc. This lead me to find companies like Ocd works/boostlab etc that take your existing compressor housing and mill it,replacing it with a insert machined to give the iconic hks sound. When I ditched the ON3 to go with Vsr mainly for the larger 1.25ar exhaust housing and hearing it spool for the 1st time,I knew I was much happier with this turbo. It performed better but it clearly sounded like should and that the turbo was there, not some half broken whistle. I still wanted to improve on it some more. I caught wind just recently that Viren was offering modded covers with the T51r mod as a bolt on to his existing line up if you call or email..and its extremely affordable.Made a few emails and here we are installing this well machined piece. I had to do my own ceramic coating on the new cover since the old one was professionally coated a darker bronze. I wanted a lighter color now to match my wheels and got some supplies to try it myself,I need to redo the rest of my hotside now to match.I will say the new cover has 0 room for error or shaft play from the center section so be sure that your turbo is in good working order before making a swap. As i put it on and it was slightly misaligned and fired it up and right back off when I heard the metal screeching!. A quick readjustment and got the car on the 2 step at 3500rpm and voila! This things sounds like a big Garrett or Borg diesel unit inside and out.We all have those times where we do a mod..try it out and when it works how you invisioned..you have that silly man giggle.I did that and hit the street for a fly by.

This isnt a performance upgrade but it sure is one for the smiles per gallon category. So if any of you have the standard compressor housing and feel like your turbo could use some volume..this is for you.

Pretty neat. Id be very curious how that does change compressor performance, if at all. My guess is it has to have some affect. But maybe not enough to really worry about

I'm sure there would be a marginal loss in the spool curve. But hardly anyone runs a turbo without an ebc to adjust that small difference of the ramp. I can't feel any seat of the pants difference to say a back to back dyno comparison is worth the effort.
