wont start just rapid clicking and no charge

got in everything goes on like usual (dome light radio infl rst etc) go to turn it on CLICK everything shuts off. Its holding an extremely weak charge just enough for the dome light to be barely lit and a weak alarm. Every thing powers back up when I hook up a jump to it, but wont turn over, it just gives a series of rapid clicks. take off the jumps everything turns off.... any ideas... short? fusible link? someone give me an idea where to look for shorts or location of a fusible link

Re: wont start just rapid clicking and no charge

Same aprox problem Lonsal had over on the SC3G board. I strongly guess its your cable terminal connections to the battery. Even jump starting you are not making a loop circut because the corrosion that has built up inside those crappy side mount screw-in connections on the new style battery posts.

Try taking them off and soaking tthe cable screw ends in either a baking soda and water solution or just good ol plain Coca-Cola works great also. Just us a plactic cup full and dip the ends into it and let them soak for a little while- Coke will clean them.

Re: wont start just rapid clicking and no charge

On that note, Another friendly tip that may help people in the future when purchasing batteries.

There is a little round sticker (usually white with black letters) that is affixed oevery battery sold. They are manufacturers date codes. the letter reprsents the month made nd the number is the year.

Examples: D3 would be April 2003, L6 would be Dec 06, etc.

This will let you know how long it has been sitting on the shelf unused before you purchased it. Pick through them and get a fresh current one so it lasts the longest under your warranty. Yes, I used to work in a gas station selling batteries amoungst other things in my high school days.

Re: wont start just rapid clicking and no charge

Just a bit if advice to anyone who has a car starting problem. If your battery is dead, you can't check anything else. Unhook your cables, and put your dead battery on a charger and give it a good charge first. When you then hook up your cables makes sure you have clean tight connections. When you try to start your car after charging, if it doesn't start, check your battery voltage. You can use a load tester to check a battery, but in my opinion the best load tester is you starter motor. If your battery looses it's charge when you try to crank the engine, the battery is "toast." You must have a good battery in the car before you can go any further in checking out the charging system. If you take your car to Kragen, Autozone, etc to have it checked and it has a bad battery, most of the time the counter people will also try to sell you an alternator as well because they try to test the alternator on the car after jump starting the car and the alternator won't put out when it is trying to charge a shorted battery. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GOOD BATTERY INSTALLED WITH CLEAN TIGHT CONNECTIONS IN ORDER TO CHECK OUT AN ALTERNATOR IN THE CAR!!!
