free exhaust

hey while browsing craigslist I found this add.
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/pts/577046383.html

basically it says free exhaust for a thirdgen if you let them develop it on your car. I emailed them and got this reply in my email

"
I have attached pic of the 1978 Camaro system we developed just 1 week ago. As my post said we are looking to develop an exhaust system for 3rd gen Camaros and need vechicles to prototype on. I have attached some pictures of the 1978 system we just finished a week ago and am now looking to fill in the gaps for other earlier 3rd gen applications.

Thanks for your interest. My name is Richard and I am the Engineering Director for Magnaflow performance exhaust here in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. You can reach me on my offical e-mail and phoen from this point on:

rwaitas@magnaflow.com / 1-800-990-0905 x3309

After having viewed the attached you can see we are looking for stock "like" appearance. If this is what you expected please give me a call or drop me an e-mail at either of my work contacts and I will be in touch with further details and scheduling.

Richard Waitas
Engineering Director
Car Sound / Magnaflow Performance Exhaust"

I checked magnaflows website and theres nothing about them looking for a camaro for research but I called the number after working hours and it did go to carsound/ magnaflow. if your interested give him a call. I already have flowmasters so i'm not interested.

I know that if you go to Magnaflows website, they do offer that there... They show a list of what kind of cars they are looking for and all that stuff...

Re: free exhaust

If it is legit, that sure would be awesome to get a free Magnaflow exhaust... But I also hear on their website that they need the car for like at least a month... Since my RS is my daily driver, I couldn't be without it for that long... even if it is for a free exhaust...

Re: free exhaust

it says this:

"I have the ability to provide a rental car for the duration I have your car at no expense and of course the exhaust components and installtion at no charge."

so i think thats covered if that is your only concern.

Re: free exhaust

Actually, my main concern is that I am happy with my Edelbrock RPM exhaust... But before I got the RPM, I was looking into the Magnaflow prototype (they werent asking for any 3rd gens, but I still submitted like 2 or 3 years ago). I was just thinking for anyone else who might be considering it... But if they do cover rental car, then loosing your car shouldnt be a concern to anyone interrested.

I didn't read the craigslist posting, I just know when I read the one on Magnaflow's website way back when, it didn't mention anything about rental car or anything like that

That is interesting because they used to have a thirdgen system and they discontinued it and went to 4th gen only. Now they want to bring it back.

That’s why I was a little skeptical about the offer, to my knowledge most companies are pretty much done with third-gens R&D. While some companies don’t even sell the products they did develop in the past and if you go to magnaflows site all the cars there requesting are 05 and 06 models so a twenty year old camaro just don’t seem like a hot item for R & D. Plus wouldn’t they pretty much have the work done from the systems they already had for camaro’s I would imagine at most they are just changing the superflo design to quite it down or louden it up. But I did find this ad on craigslist so anythings possible and good luck to those giving it a shot
oh and If you end up getting an exhaust

Have you noticed the new members TGO has gotten in the last couple of months? Maybe it's just me, but I've seen alot of "hi guys i'm a newb" posts lately. Maybe Magnaflow's renewed interest is related to that trend. Maybe our thirdgens are gaining some popularity.

When you think about it, thirdgens are perfect for high school/college kids, people with low funds, etc--it's a 350 for around $1000 (if you look in the right places)! A lot of these newbie members seem to be in that age bracket. I don't know what kinda price point Magnaflow is shooting for, but a cheap easy bolt on kit for $300 would make a lot of sense to the new people that are saving our cars from the crusher.

Hooker HAD a nice bolt-on cat back. Stainless Steel system that sold for $259. That's when I bought mine.

I now see they only offer aluminized steel systems for around $400. At least they upgraded the tips to Stainless Steel so I can replace the crappy ones they used to include. The tips on mine started to rust in just a few short months.

Re: free exhaust

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I received a call From Richard @ Magnaflow and I am dropping off my car on Saturday morning. He gave me the address of the Magnaflow location in Rancho Santa Margarita. The car will be there all week and will be ready for pick up on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

He stated that they are working on using the same or identical system that the 4th gen is using but fitted on the 3rd gen. They want the 3rd gen so they can get all the proper fittings and sounds.

I will let you guys know how it turns out. If I get the car back on Friday, I will be driving it on the Angeles Crest Cruise.

Well when I spoke to Richard on the phone he stated that the already had a date set for a 305 Formula. (or Camaro). He said all he needed now was a 350 TPI. So I dont know if he still needs anymore cars. I will ask for you though.

Also, I want to thank koolcutta, If it was not for this post, I would not have looked into it. Thanks for the heads up koolcutta.

Thanks for catching my error Tim.

Re: free exhaust

Sounds like that scam that was around "were developing a universal electrical system for a vette and need your car for a week" and from it you'll receive a harness for free. Not really sure what the scam was or if anyone actuall gave them their corvette for a week.

I hope they get single-cat and dual-cat vehicles. Either way, the 4th gen setup is close enough for any skilled muffler shop (like Dyno Don ) to finish the connection.

Re: free exhaust

UPDATE: I got my car back from Magnaflow.

The single cat L98 system is 3" mandrel bent stainless all the way to the muffler, then 3" slash cut stainless tailpipes. The tone is a VERY deep sounding growl at about 1600-3000 rpm. At wide open throttle, it sounds like WIDE OPEN THROTTLE with almost no resistance from the cat to the tailpipes. At a low rpm cruise it's so quiet it almost sounds stock. This system has the deepest sounding growl out of any of the Magnaflow systems I've heard online.

Also, according to Richard (product engineer) at Magnaflow, this is a completely redesigned system from the ground up. Contrary to what a lot of us thought, this is not a retrofitted fourth gen system. The muffler is brand new and has been designed specifically for a third gen TPI engine to eliminate the drone that sometimes occurs when a fourth gen system is installed on a third gen. The previous thirdgen system was discontinued because it was simply a retrofitted fourth gen system, and the droning sound was a known problem.

On a personal note--I'm stoked! This is the coolest sounding thirdgen exhaust I have heard so far, and I got the prototype! In fact, my car will be in the video on their website--everybody look out for the Maui Blue Formula 350! I also just happened to end up with a free high flow cat!

I'll try to get some clips of it up this weekend and I'll give everybody another update in about a week or so--once I know the muffler isn't going to fall off or something

woW WISH I COUld get that free exhaust without a cat for my 350 TPI or my 305 here in florida. since we dont have emissions checks it would be good to go all out and truly hear what a 350 sounds like in that magnaflow deal.

Re: free exhaust

Hey guys.

I also picked my car up on Friday. Brandon, I was there when they were pulling your out. Nice sound man. I was really happy with my sound as well. It is not too loud at crusing speeds but you can certainly hear it at WOT. There is a picture of my 1990 dual catalyst configuration on the thread below. At first I didnt think it was my car but after a closer look I can tell it is the underneath of my car and Richard assured it was.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...ml#post3677687

Same as Brondotron, 3" mandrel bent stainless all the way to the rear end. I do not know how to post vids so sorry guys. Some of you can check out the sound at the SC3g.org meeting. Also, the systems will be available in about 30-45 days and the videos of teh cars will be available on the Magnaflow site in few weeks. So look for that video add online so you can hear our cars.

Re: free exhaust

Here is a quick clip of my new exhaust. I don't have the means to make a quality vid...but you get the gist of it

Re: free exhaust

Howdy all! The Magnaflow system is holding up nicely, though there are a few squeaks I can't seem to find. My car is on their website now! Pics and vids! This is the link:
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...e=AMML&id=4063

The catback system is scheduled to be released 4/28. Here's the dyno sheet from MY car, straight from the site

I'm VERY flattered, and I'm stoked they dynoed it, but does this rwhp look right for a bone stock L98 with a high flow cat and exhaust? Do I have a factory freak?
