I'm sure it'll sound real nice. I have a magnaflow stainless muff on my bird and behind some LTs it sounds wicked at WOT.

Very cool. How did you get your hands on that? Looks very nice. You don't happen to have a sound clip? Hoping that they are a little faster than their estimated 8 to 10 weeks. I have a bad case of spring fever.

 

My guess is that he volunteered his car to magnaflow as a jig for test-fitting.

Looks real nice. Even though I totally dont like the sound, I cant argue with an affordable satinless catback.

One thing I dont like - tell them to loose the "tip inside of a tip" or "intercooled tip" or whatever it is. I just like a single wall, stainless, slash cut tip.

 

High flow catalyst equiped mandrel bent stainless steel manifold pipes are will be available as well.

Here is the 1990 dual catalyst configuration. 22% increase in total flow capacity and should be hitting the dyno early next week.

When I get headers like 2055's or something, I will have to pick a 86-90 TPI system with 3" I-pipe, so that would be great. Will you ask him, when you see them, if they plan to design a different muffler that might be "louder" or something, because the crossflows from the 4th gens dont seem to be any more loud than stock, when used on a GEN I. Also, are they going to keep the weird tips like in the picture above?

I think this will be a good move for magnaflow, because flowmaster just jacked the price of their system up to like $450 on all the websites. So, with the magnaflow retailing for a little less than that, and being stainless, it will sell good I bet.

 

I heard from a guy that dropped his car off before me that I'll get to choose between the round tips pictured or those rectangular z/28 tips. I might be leaning toward the latter...I kinda like those.

Just one guys humble opinion but the Z28 tips would be the way I would go. thats my When you are there it would be interesting to know if they plan on offering both styles of tips or if it will come standard with the round tips and the Z28 tips could be had for extra money.

Oxidizr to you have a flow rating for the catalytic converters used on the dual cat system shown? I know your metallic spun converters are close to 600cfm.

I forgot I had a video. 160,000 miles, L98,700R4, new cat at the time of cat-back install.

I must say, I wasn't very thrilled with the way it sounded at first. But as everything "broke in", I liked it more & more. The video shows the way it ended up sounding like.

Stephen, the texas rumbler sounds pretty good. But I dont see how it is comparable to this new magnaflow system, which is completely bolt on.

I like the flow design better than the stock-style crossflow muffler in the back.

 

Yeah, but I dont have a welder yet, and I am sure lots of people dont either, so that is a non-option.

It does sound pretty nice though. kinda like a cheap SLP loudmouth. What kind of muffler do they put in the I-pipe?

As far as I know, only the hangers need tweaking for LS cat-backs, no major mods.

It would make more sense to get the whole cat-back. They use stainless 3" mandrel bent pipe, and by using their I-pipe, no tweaking will be necessary.

 

I already a have 3 inch mandrel bent pipe going from my cat to my current dynomax muffler, but I like the look and sound of this magnaflow one. i just need the muffler and tips that are exiting the rear...would I be able to purchase it now???..that setup is sweeettt

UPDATE: I got my car back from Magnaflow.

The single cat L98 system is 3" mandrel bent stainless all the way to the muffler, then 3" slash cut stainless tailpipes. The tone is a VERY deep sounding growl at about 1600-3000 rpm. At wide open throttle, it sounds like WIDE OPEN THROTTLE with almost no resistance from the cat to the tailpipes. At a low rpm cruise it's so quiet it almost sounds stock. This system has the deepest sounding growl out of any of the Magnaflow systems I've heard online.

Also, according to Richard (product engineer) at Magnaflow, this is a completely redesigned system from the ground up. Contrary to what a lot of us thought, this is not a retrofitted fourth gen system. The muffler is brand new and has been designed specifically for a third gen TPI engine to eliminate the drone that sometimes occurs when a fourth gen system is installed on a third gen. The previous thirdgen system was discontinued because it was simply a retrofitted fourth gen system, and the droning sound was a known problem.

On a personal note--I'm stoked! This is the coolest sounding thirdgen exhaust I have heard so far, and I got the prototype! In fact, my car will be in the video on their website--everybody look out for the Maui Blue Formula 350! I also just happened to end up with a free high flow cat!

I'll try to get some clips of it up this weekend and I'll give everybody another update in about a week or so--once I know the muffler isn't going to fall off or something

 

how well does it fit? like whats the ground clearance? on my car i have some sort of cat-back (i didnt have it installed) and its so low that i drag on the slightest bumps.

I've never understood stainless exhausts anyways. The are MEGA expensive. I can replace my steel exhaust like 3 times, for the price of a stainless system. Most people don't keep a car for a long time anyways. By the time a steel exhaust system rusts, a person will probably be wanting a different muffler, at the least, anyways....

For a show car, I can see the WOW factor.
For the "I've got stainless exhaust." bragging factor, OK.

Did they replace your exhaust from the cat back or manifolds back? If they did it from the manifolds back post a picture up. I'd like to compare it to the dual cat set up above.

If you saw a black C4 there that was my car.

 

It's a pretty good fit, but it hangs almost an inch lower than stock.

Hey 82firebirdta .... Why didn't you put a TPIS 3.5 to dual 3.0 tailpipe cat back on yours. My buddy just put one on his with super44's and it sounds real nice.

 

Does anyone know the specs of the old Magnaflow catback? I bought my car 2 years ago with this already on it, so I don't know much about it. Is it a 3" catback like the seller told me? I've always wondered...

Also, how do I even verify its a Magnaflow on it? I've casusally looked at the muffler a few times, and there is no brand on it like the one shown on here. Its obviously not a stock-type exhaust, but how can I ID it as a Magnaflow? Thanks to anyone who can help.

 

Maybe douchebags in texas think its a poser thing but if you live in the NE (bad weather) its a must to have SS. Besides, why re-do exhaust every 2 years when you can have it last 10. Id rather place my work on the other things that a 20YO car needs.

Saying that the snowy states need to replace their steel exhaust every 2 years because of rust (which I believe to be over stated) could have stated MUCH cleaner.

Around here, I'd be surprised to find rusty exhaust after 10 years....15 years...Around 20 you MIGHT find some. Other than the welds, exhaust rust is hard to find around here.

 

Lets get this straight, if I wanted to call you anything, I'd do it.

The point is: Not everyone lives in Texas. I have personally replaced exhaust pipes on my own car after only 26 months of use on a DD (not a 3rd gen), and yes the pipes had already rusted to the point of leaking. Sue me I exaggerated by 2 months

To say that people put on SS exhaust for the the poser factor is ignorant. Maybe down in Texas thats true.

 

Here in CT, me and my buddies have figured that aluminized pipe will last about 3 years, maybe a little more max. The first year, it will stay like new. But at some point, you will get scratches in the alum coating. Also by that time, the spray enamel they use on the welds is flaking off.

By the second winter, the welds will begin the stages of rot. Also, any little nicks or dings will be rust spots now. On the third year, alot of the pipe is surface rust, and the probability of rot causing leaks is pretty high...

 

Considering the price of the Magnaflow system is in line with the Flowmaster (I paid $40 more for mine than I paid for my old Flowmaster ) and others, and far less than Borla or Corsa, I don't see what the big deal is.

I've had replacement cat backs rot out after less than 2 years. To the point where the pipes where flaking apart. My friend goes through exhaust almost yearly on his plow truck. My olf IROC has a Flowmaster aluminized cat back, and after a year it was still solid, but there was slight surface rust in some places. My Magnaflow stainless set up looks the same as the day I installed it. neither car is driven in snow, and only rain if by accident. My moms Dakota has factory stainless exhaust. It's a 98 and been driven through every winter since new. Other than being a dusty dull color it's in perfect shape. 10 winters, and doesn't need to be replaced anytime soon.

I'm interested to hear the difference between my car ( the one slow_firebird posted the video of ) and this new muffler.

I definitely would have bought the 3rd gen system had it been available just to save a little hassle.

*edit* Just to clarify, I love how mine sounds, so I don't see it sounding similar as a negative thing at all.
