Moving to San Diego

Well guys, on March 18th, Ill be a San Deigon. Can't wait. I'll be living around the SDSU campus. Anyone from around there? Do you guys ever meet up and hang out? Anyone know of a place around there that is hiring? Not looking to commute more than a few miles if I don't have to as gas is getting pretty high real soon.

Anyway, post up.

Theres no such thing as a short commute in so-cal unless you want to be a burger flipper I drive 110 miles every day round trip.

Whether you will be hired depends on what you have to offer. Skills, education? I would say the job market down here for most people is not very good. California is hemorrhaging business and jobs faster than it created them.

What do you do that makes it worth driving 110 miles a day for? Im sorry, that is crazy.

As for me, Ive been in the food industry for 13 years now. But Im not looking for a career, just something to put some money in my pocket and keep me off the streets.

That kind of commute is actually quite common for low and mid level professionals in Southern California. To afford a house near where you work, you either need to be employed at a burger joint in a crappy neighborhood or be making a ton of money.

Housing is ridiculously expensive near areas with dense employment opportunities. So you have what is called a "bedroom" community. A bedroom community is basically a whole town whose inhabitants leave every morning for a whole other area to go to work.
Generally, most places east of the 15, and a lot of places on the 15 are bedroom communities. I drive from Murrieta to Poway every day because that is where the Aerospace jobs are at. I work in the defense industry. For a house like mine in Poway, I would easily pay almost double what I paid for my house.

Is it worth it? No, that's why I am leaving California

Re: Moving to San Diego

Hi BWGTP, welcome to SoCal. We know each other from living in AZ a few years back. I've been back home here at the beach for about three years now and haven't missed Kingman too much, although I still own a house there. I know you'll like the SoCal weather, it's super. One way to beat the long commutes is to car- or van-pool. Another way to cope with the high cost of living is to be very careful to avoid moving violations, as it seems most tickets come with a hefty $400-500 price tag. California is desperately money-hungry, it seems it will do just about anything to get its hands in residents' pockets.

Re: Moving to San Diego

Yeah I remember you Duck. I know I love now. We used to go as a family every summer for a weekend or a week at a beachhouse. The summers we didn't get to go really hurt. Its a nice place. 110* and not being able to do much but stay inside gets really old. I'll be as careful as I can with my car over there. Over the last few years, I've learned to just cruise and enjoy the car that way
