How hard is it to replace the carrier ??
Right now I have an open rear and I just bought an Eaton posi on sale for $299 brand new (shipped to my door for $305).
Anyway, I was wondering how hard this was to replace. Is it something I could probably do myself ?? I just plan on replacing the carrier and using the same ring and pinion ...
I am fairly mechanically inclined but have just never done anything with a rearend before. ....
Thank's for any and all advice !!!
(The local shop wants $300+ to do this.)

Car: Yes...
Engine: Last time I checked...
Transmission: See "Engine"...
I'd take it to a shop. Setting up a rearend and getting it adjusted correctly can be a delicate procedure.

just pull the carreir, swap the ring gear over to the new carrier, put the shims back on each side the same as thay came out check back lash, check contact pattern, seal up and fill with oil and posi additive if you have clutch type posi. pretty simple to do and only "special tool" you need is an indicator.

Actually your post belongs in the transmission and drivetrain forum, but I'll go into it briefly here. Go do a search on "zexel" in the other forum. (I know you do not have a zexel, but the intall is the same).
If you have a good assortment of hand tools, torque wrench, and can get a dial indicator and magnetic base, and have lots of patience to do this work under you car, then I'd say yes you can do it. The $300 you were quoted seems pretty high to me. It should be more like $100 to $150 max. if it's just a carrier swap. The new eaton won't have bearings on it, so it takes only a couple of minutes to press some new bearings on, which is MUCH easier than pulling old bearings off than pressing new ones on.
Does the $300 include any parts, or just labor? New bearings and races are around $60, and gear oil around $15 maybe. So even if the $300 does include parts, it's still pretty high.
At some point in time I'm going to try and do a tech article on a zexel install, which will be exactly the same procedure as installing an eaton. I ordered a spare zexel and have got another rear axle here to put it in. Just have to wait for the zexel to get here, and find the time to do it.

I told the shop that all I needed was the carrier switched out, and they told me $300. At first he did not want to do it at all because I did not buy the posi unit from him. He said everyone goes and buys everything mail order from Jegs and wants him to put it in ... and that does HIM no good. He wants the profit from the markup on the posi too. He gave me a quote of $650 to install the Eaton posi if I got it from him.
I also called another shop and got an estimate of $80 - $100
but I have to rake the rearend out of the car first.
So I guess I know what I will be doing as soon as it warms up a litte !! =o) Sorry about posting in the wrong area... first rearend question I have asked, wasn't sure where it went. Thank's for the advice guys !!
