Weird rattle
Every time I go over a bump I can hear a rattle. It seems like it is coming from the back half of the car. It is hard to tell though since I am driving.
I have looked all over and haven't found anything loose yet.
I heard somewhere it could be the brake pads. Is that a possibilty that they are rattling against the rotors
It's just really annoying and I would like to fix it.

It most likely is the shoes banging against the rotors. I have this problem too.
But it would not be a bad idea to check out the rear underside for any loose components just to be sure.

try moving your calipers up and down, if they move any amount or make any noise thats your problem. the holes in the caliper where the caliper bolts slide through are supposed to have rubber grommets in them, sometimes they deteriote and come out during brake work or someone takes them out and doesnt put them back in. without the rubber grommets the calipers will rattling against the bolts, very not cool lol. check all your calipers first, each should have 4 of the rubber bushings, 2 for each bolt. if its not that then move to other things, maybe loose tie rods or something.

if it was the pads it would`nt rattle when you are braking , i once had a noise like that and it turned out to be the spare ratling

I had this happen, one of my exhaust tips was hitting the spare tire compartment during left turns. Too bad my quality block of wood fell off a week ago

I took off my tire and looked at my brakes. It makes the same noise when I move the rotor back and forth and it hits the back of what I think is called the hub. I took my brakes off and checked everything and the rubber gromets are still there. Everything was tight. I put the tire back on and it still makes that noise. It really doesn't make sense because when the tire is bolted up the rotor shouldn't move at all right? And the bolts are tight too.

I have the same problem, front and back. The noise started right after I did the brakes. Same thing happened to my camaro. I think it is the rubber grommets. I know it isn't any of the bushings, because all of mine have been replaced recently. Mine only make the noise when I hit a bump too.

Same here, and I have just had my rears redone again (for free,because they could not figure it out). Only thing is I have to take it back again because the calipers seem like they are sticking again. I drive about 3 miles, come to a stop, and I get this noise that you can actually feel right through the frame. I wonder if they got all the parts back in? Any ideas. Each time I have had them done they work Ok for about 2 or 3 weeks and then that noise comes back! They are goin to love me when I call them back next week to schedule an appointment. New parking brake cable too. However, after I use it there is alot of play in it for awhile. Something has to be sticking in there somewhere

I just had eibach springs put in, and the mechanic told me that the stud on one of my rear shocks was stripped, so it is loose and kind of rattles around, but doesnt really affect driving ability. A new stud is going to be ordered on Monday...but this noise is coming from the rear, when I hit a bump, and can be felt through the frame. Y'all may want to check it out. Hope that helps.

sometimes the pads can rattle in the caliper. When you replace the pads they have 2 ears that stick out from them, your supose to bend these ears down with a hammer so that they fit snuggly in the caliper this is for the outter pads the inner use a clip to keep them in place against the piston. Alot of shops just take out the old and throw in the new without bending these tabs. However if you are feeling the rattle inside your car more than likely this isn't your problem.

I am not feeling the noise. I just hear it when I go over bumps. I also hear the same noise when I let off the break from a slow roll or a stop. When I replace them I just took the old ones out and put the new ones in. Where can I get another clip?

No the piston should already be set to the current pad thickness. You only really have to do that with new pads because of the thickness of the new pads compared to the old worn ones. It will slip right back on with the same pads. I prefer bending the tabs with the pads removed because it's a lot eaisier in my oppinion and you get a much tighter fit. Use a hammer and lightly tap the ears till you get a snug fit when putting the pad back on the caliper and if you go to far just bend them the other way till you get a perfect fit. I've tried the channel lock method and it doesn't really work all that well.

Check all the bushings and linkages. The '91 I had for a short time, didn't have any bushings in the front end linkages to the sway bar. It would sound like a chain rattling when I hit a bump.
