Hey most of the sub stuff is expendable weight. I remove it all but the box if I go to a drag strip (closest 1/4 one is acouple hours drive). The box shouldn't weigh more than 50 lbs (particle board). This winter I'm doing a new one out of MDF (sure it will be heavier but I'll mod the design to make it removeable).

Anyways what does it matter I still spin the tires on the street like no tomorrow. I still can't hook up on regular street tires with a stock 350 TPI! And this is my everyday driver. I know when I get my new 383 carb'd solid roller and pull out the 3.27s and put in the 3.73s it's really not gonna hook.

Right now I get around 15 mpg under regular driving (city and crappy country roads). If I drive on the interstate at 70 mph I can actually pull around 20 mpg. Last tank I got 18 mpg (mix interstate and regular driving).

And Finally can every person on here please stop calling a ROLL BAR A ROLL CAGE. It really gets on my fricking nerves.

Well I mean... I've seen posts on here or fbody.com where people refer to a 6 and 8 point roll cage (packaged that way). I've yet to see a 6/8 point roll cage that was marketed as an actual roll cage. Sorry I didn't mean to flame. Anyways going back to the topic, so have you decided on which brand and type you're wanting to buy?

Only if everybody stops refering to their "motors" Technically motors are electric and engines are combustable.

Hey electric stuff can be combustable too! If you put enough power to them that is. One time my dad (electrican) hook'd up the lines wrong in a house and tapped the wall outlet line right into the 220 line and it turned a radio on instantly and started playing music course it only lasted a few seconds then it was up in smoke.

actually it said 8 point roll cage on my competition engineering 8 point roll cage.

8 point roll bar? i think that goes slightly beyond being a roll bar

Hmm interesting. I've got to admit I've never really looked at comp stuff that closely I got mine from S&W. http://www.swracecars.com/roll%20bars%26cages.html

They call the 8 point a roll bar and the 10 point a cage. Mainly cause the 10 has the halo and front a pillars I believe.

thats farther then my motorcycle can go on a tank.

i expect anywhere from 8-15 MPG on the hwy with the carb

12-20 mpg on the hwy with FI.... FI is better mainly because it has a hwy mode and i expect i can run it pretty lean.....

with a realistic 14 gals thats usable without worrying about runnint out, that puts it at 112- 210 hwy miles per tank with the carb... 168 - 280

but im just guessing..... with perfect conditions though, i can hit 30mpg on the hwy with the car as it sits now.

Well I couldn't find the magazine but I did find a Hot Rod that there was a Comet with a 347 ford stroker with tremec that ran 10s and still got 15 mpg! It weighed in around 3,400 lbs too.

First of all, if you're welding in a cage go ahead and finish up the frame, and weld the cage to that. Sheet metal tends to tear and rip even if you have a 6x6 plate welded to it.

Second, the only way to go fast, get good fuel economy, and still keep your creature comforts is to use some kind of power adder.

It isn't a cage unless it has a halo, according to the NHRA. And I would just like to know how we got on the topic of gas mileage and 600 cubic inch motors/engines when this thread started about a roll bar/cage whatever the hell you want to call it...

i love this board....

Well you gain 3-5 mpg if you only have a ROLL BAR installed over a ROLL CAGE, with a 600+cid ENGINE

Question for you guys with roll bars ....how do you paint them and what kinda paint do you use? I imagine painting inside the car can be a little tricky?

I just used ceramic engine paint in a ratttle can, very glossy, very durable, and easily touched up by the wear and tear they get entering/exiting the car.

In the S-10 my uncle used a small paint brush and a can of rustoleum gloss black since he was **** about rattle can, it worked great, but after getting in and out of the capt. seat 3 or 4 times, the bar was down to the metal already, the rest of the cage that doesnt get touched is still looking fine though.

i used gloss black rustoleum.....the interior is already stripped, so you roll down your side windows and cover up the doors, take out the tops if you have them and cover the windows and dash up good....

then paint all the really hard to reach areas first

same thing here, rustoleum spray bomb. I put a couple coats of primer on it first. then it is easier to see when it gets scrathced and chipped. call me weird but i touch up the side bar on a regular basis. amazing what those little tabs on your jeans will do...
