AFS ZR-1 wheels

I have been looking at ZR-1 wheels and noticed a set on ebay from AFS wheels. They are aftermarket and a lot cheaper than what I have seen at slp or other places.
Does anyone know anything about these wheels? I don't wanna have a structural problem crossing nevada in excess of the speed limit. I know they need spacers fro my third gen which adds another $300 .
thanks........bob

Yeah I was eyeballin the same rims and had the same question...I also wondered if the rear 17x11's would fit the rear of the third gen's with the proper wheel adaptor? If so what size adaptor would be needed ? I would hate for them to stick out to far from the wheel well and look like crap or rub like an S.O.B.....

grunger, check out http// www. skulte.com/adapterfaq.html and see what they say about adapters. If I read it correctly you can run the 11's in the rear but you have to use a shorter adapter.
that would be bad a**. I wonder if there are any problems with clearance on the LE1 brakes with 12 inch rotors??

This is still a very expensive proposition though. 800 for wheels, 800 or so for tires and 300 for adapters plus shipping. Looks like about $2000 to me...........bob

and for that price you could get a custom set of billet 2 piece wheels that wouldn't need adapters. quality of afs wheels is iffy but you get what you pay for....

good luck.

Quality is not bad??? I have a set on my vette...Mine were perfect.... I mean look at their ads and discounts....they will knock like 25% off of a set of wheels over a little chip in the plating....They will post pics of the little imperfection and give a huge discount.... IMHO most wheel companies Ive seen sell those defects as new rims...

ONLY problem with AFS versus other brands is AFS seem to be Heavier rims.... I dont have the exact weight... but their are much heavier than GM ones..

Kenwood, good stuff to know.Thanks........ I don't want heavier wheels but I guess for the price there has to be a trade off. I need a new set of rear tires and was thinking about just upgrading to 17's all the way around and a new set of tires but I can spend about $250 for 2 new rears or $2000 for good wheels, spacers and new tires. Slp 17X8 would be a good compromise but they are painted and only 8"wide. Seems like the best thing to do is wait till SLp does a bolt on 17X9 (they are considering it) and then do the conversion for about $1600.

thanks everyone for your help on this..........bob

Well...I'am still considering them and need facts not opinions.
Are you speaking from experience in regards to these wheels? Have you owned a set of them?.....because most people hate wastin time with anyone who never use anything but would appear to be experts on everything-not saying that's you...only that it's annoying as hell.... I'am sure you would agree

just be sure NOT to get the 36mm backspaced rears - they will not fit unless u use a slip on spacer as they cannot make a bolt on spacer thin enough ... at least thats the way it is for the firebird to get them tucked in nicely

adapters are a nice option when you get wheels for cheap but why not consider getting the slp ones that are direct fit. so much nicer without using an adapter. i'd at least do that for the front and depending on what rear your running you could use a wider setup out back with only one pair of adapters.

Personally I think the SLP ones look like ***. They don't look right at all.

What aspect is the quality lacking??? Im confused here...Ive seen them on countless vettes...I own a set...all looked good... And as stated above any RIM with any kind of defect they make gets sold on ebay as Blemished... Now if someone bought a Blemished wheel and complained about quality then Id have to laugh... FWIW Ive had mine on my car for over 5 years... Still look great..

the problem with the SLP ones is that they are waaay to narrow.

true, however perfect for the front. street cars, particularly thirdgens really don't need larger then 8" wide up front. however everyones different. if you don't mind the hassles that go with it the wider the better. i've seen 11's all around with stock height why not go true rear zr1 all around then.

Why bother buying new? I bought a set of four 98SS ZR1 style wheels, painted silver, with brand new 275/40r17 Kuhmos up front and Nitto DRs in the rear. Cost me $600 shipped to my door, and the wheels are in PERFECT condition. I got mine from LS1.com's classifieds. Both LS1.com and CamaroZ28.com have classifieds that often have these wheels for sale.

So basically just under a grand bought me 17x9 wheels, with 275/40r17 tires, drag radials in the rear, a set of GM lug nuts with caps and locks, and the necessary adapters from Skulte.com

probably because you don't find that sort of offer everyday and in most realities what people sell isn't in the condition they claim unfortunately...you aparently recieved a decent deal though which in turn makes it worth dealing with it.

Marc85, those wheels look awesome and you got a great deal!
I wondered what the silver ones would look like vs chrome but those look great. It seems that when I am selling something that is very clean like those wheels and tires I always have to sell for cheap but when I want to buy, I have to pay too much and sometimes I end up with crap. I am going to keep my eye out on that site though. I just bought a new set of rears and will drive it a while longer with the stock set up till I find something I can afford....bob

I prefer the silver wheels, or maybe even the polished, but never chrome. Never, ever, ever chrome. Chrome belongs on a show car so some 50 year old guy can clean and polish it for hours a day so he can sit in his lawn chair with pride...

Kandied91Z - go check out thel listed sites. What I paid is about going rate for these wheels. I know there are those who have had bad dealings through the internet, but most go well.

I've bought the above mentioned wheels and tires, 4th gen seats, overhead console, sway bars, 2 sets of headers, 2 different catbacks, a complete 10 bolt rear, intake manifolds, aircleaner setups, LS1 driveshaft, instrument cluster, etc etc. 90% of my car was bought used online. Not one bad deal yet. All were achieve with stellar prices. Good deals are not rare...

I currently have AFS wheels I bought on ebay as non-blemished wheels, 17x9.5 front and 17x11 rear. I bought the polished ones, they cost me $560 including shipping. Only thing I didn't like is that I didn't have a choice of centercaps. I ended up with the vette caps, with the bowtie. My car IS a pontiac, so I guess I'll have to change that, but they want $60 for a set of plain caps! They fit fine on both my cars, on the 85 i have them with 1.75" adapters (after the c5 brake conversion and 1LE hubs) and 1.25" rear with some slight inner fender modification (using my precision inner fender modification tools: torch and big f'n hammer).

I put a pair of 17x9.5 AFS GS Wheels on my car to get some pictures.
I was using Skulte 2" Adaptors with the wheels.

I know plenty of people with AFS wheels and they haven't had any problems with thier wheels.
