Gimme a brake!

My brakes have been pretty "mushy" for a while. I have to push the brake to the floor to gradually stop, so if I were in an emergency, I'd be screwed, blued, and tatooed. Well fortunately for me, my brakes started squeeking again recently. This was enough to motivate me to redo my brakes, front AND rear. I bought new drums and shoes for the rear so far. I always wanted painted drums and calipers, so I bought some VHT Brake and Caliper paint. I got the 'Racing Red' color, which after 3 coats, looks more like 'Safety Orange'. I was a little dissappointed, but I went out and bought some Krylon Rust stop paint. I got the 'Cherry Red' color, and applied a coat over the drums, and wow! The 2 colors blending really gave me the color red i was looking for! I took off the front calipers and rotors by myself, following the Haynes Manual to the letter. I was very pleased with myself. I went to Murrays to get them turned, and found out that they couldn't be turned anymore. Oh well, I got some new rotors which are shiny. I couldn't afford new calipers, and the ones I have are fine, so I took a wire brush to them, and painted them, using the same procedure as the drums. I need to get some parts from Murrays tomorrow, and then it will be done. I'll post up some pics hopefully!

Dont ya hate it when that happens? "Back in the day" (1994), I painted my struts glow-in-the-dark orange; it actually looked kinda cool.

Were the brakes even mushy when you started driving, or was it after the pads heated up? Hopefully it was just paper-thin rotors being unable to dissipate the heat. Do the brake hoses look OK?

They were mushy when I started driving. I really don't know what to look for in the brake lines, so I can't tell you, but I'll check them out tomorrow, and if need be, replace it. I hope it IS just the thin rotors and lack of drum brakes, because stupid me didn't replace the drums last year when I replaced the pads, so I'm not surprised that the pads wore out so fast.

Bleed your brakes, it sometimes helps. Mine were as mushy as you describe yours till I bled them, my father said a good bit of air came out from one of the fronts. Now they lock a little too easily with Bendix pads.
