wheel widening?

I heard, back in the day, that a wheel can be widened. Ie, cut it, weld in a section, and have the wheel wider.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? Anyone have this done?

Thanks -J

Yeah if you do a search on it, I believe there is a thread where someone has pictures of this being done with their stock 91-92 Camaro wheels. He had them take the stock 16x8's and turn them into 16x6 front 16x10 rear or something similar (not exactly sure). I'm hoping to have this done with a set of 15x7 IROC wheels (not the RS wheels) for my drag car project. But I'm still trying to find a local shop that can do it.

that would be pretty nifty! i wouldn't mind my stock wheels being 15x9 and 15x5! i like the look of my stock wheels, i just wouldn't mind a bit of a lip!

well I certainly wouldn't want to make my wheels skinnier, that'd just be silly. I was thinking of taking my rears up to 8" (formula wheels, when/if I get them...) so I can put on wider tires without them balooning up too bad...
Shipping would be nuts, so i'll keep an eye out for a local place... who knows...

I would make sense for drag racing. (skinny front, wide rear).
