shocks too stiff

alright this isnt my first post about the horrible ride quality of my car, heh..
but.. ok I think ive narrowed it down to the rear shocks though.. it has tokiko struts and shocks
now if you get outside and push on the front end, the car moves, comes up and settles, good right??
ok now if you goto the back of the car and push down on it.. you nearly cant, im 180lbs and id have to literally jump on it to get the bastard to travel more then an inch
the rear tires have a tendancy to seem to want to HOP off the ground when driving on bad roads (90% of the roads anywhere in CT, heh)
anyways could someone explain this to me... is this performance??? heh
can I possibly have the wrong shocks??
are they just this stiff so you have the possibility of putting more weight in the "trunk" ??
this car is brutal, I had to spend nearly 30 minutes driving along elevated highway the other day, where you hit the dividers every 2 seconds going along... i wanted to drive the thing into the wall

please someone educate me on wtf is up here

IMO you may want to consider the springs being too stiff rather than the shocks...

tokico makes adjustable and non-adjustable. So they may be adjustable and set to high. I belive they adjust on the inside of the car?

Also could be some rear springs since I'm guessing you bought the car used.

I need some rear shocks if you need to sell them and are adjustable

I'd agree with checking your springs too. If the shocks aren't adjustable then unbolt the tops and see how the car bounces. NOTE:- you don't have to drive it down the road!!

they are the non adjustable ones (HP?)
Im pretty sure the springs are stock, they sposed to be that stiff as well?
im going to try that and see how it moves without the shocks
somethings beat, the front has travel.. i always thought the entire suspension setup was beating me around but i really think its just the rear end now

but putting the problem aside
can someone explain to me how the rear end being that stiff, equates to any kind of perfomance at all??
it already gets 0 traction, im positive thats not helping at all
if the tires want to fly off the ground thats a good way to get yourself wrecked.. so what the heck?

ill trade you my shocks for some really long bumpstops.. my ride would probably improve :P

Stiffer suspension = less body roll = flatter cornering = faster cornering, up to a point!! If, as you say the tyres get kicked off the ground then you've lost any advantage once the rubber leaves the road.

if they are non-adjustable, then they shouldnt be that stiff.

Wonder if they are locked into position? Or maybe the panhard bar rusted into position as well?

Try above suggestion and let us know your findings.

no there not locked, and nothing is rusted in place... thanks for the suggestion though :/
i think im just going to get adjustable ones, i might be able to live with it if the front and back were even
but on alot of the roads... its like --- remember riding in the back of the school bus when the driver hit a pothole, and you go flying out of your seat?? haha.. my car is something like that

Did you try the unbolt your shocks and push down on it thing? Thats a really good idea to narrow it down.

Car: '87 FIREGOOSE!!!!
I had the exact same problem with my car. The rear used to almost come off the groung over bumps and such on roads, it was totally miserable to drive, so rough. I know it's a sports car, but it didn't ride like that when I got it. In 96' the struts/shocks were replaced with KYB GR2/Gas-A-Just's, and the springs with Moog. I drove it like this until last summer, when I had enough, and also discovered the rear Moogs part # was for cargo coils. I replaced with Eibach's & Bilstien's, now the car handles great, and doesn't beat me up doing it.
I know this didn't really answer your question, but maybe giving you some ideas I guess.

I havent unbolted the shocks yet because i know at least one of those bolts is rusted solid and i think its going to be a 2-man operation.. i think ill try today if it doesnt rain
had to screw with it last year when it came loose on the bottom, was hell
everythings able to move.. it just doesnt move very much

Buddy: cargo coils huh?? yeah im definately going to see how those springs feel like without the shocks.. perhaps ive got the wrong ones
is there a number stamped on the springs? never messed with em before
i know it will ride alright if i throw weight in the back, tried it out before then it rides much better

There isn't any number stamped as far as I know, but I'm going to look through my old paperwork to find the Moog cc part #.
Like I said, it made a HUGE difference when I put the Eibach's in, just went with 1" Pro's, but I was worried with the lowering it would get even worse... was I wrong. The Moog's went in @ '96, replacing factory original, and when they came out last summer, they were still as stiff and at the exact same height as when they went in. Definetely a STIFF spring.

i got the adjustable tokicos set on the 4 out of 5 (5 being the stiffest) and riding on eibach pro kit springs and the car rides pretty nice.. not nasty at all... not that stiff, but this is after i put some miles on them and i guess worked them in, because they seem to have gotten abit softer now. i only had them on for a year now i guess so thats about 6000miles or so

and it handles well...

i suggest you try the above suggested items and if it still is stiff, then just go pro kit and adjustable shocks.. they make it really nice, put them on the softer settings like 2 all the way around and it rides soft like a Cadillac
