Suspension upgrade

I know nothing about suspension, oddly...can anybody give me some pointers on what I can buy to upgrade my suspension..i'd like to even lower it too. is there anybody on here that has already done this? and if so can you please help me???

Yeah i have searched...but the problem is i don't know what I am looking at...haha. i went to the spohn website and looked up stuff for my car, but i have no idea what goes with what or what i need if i get something else? that's why i need some help! Haha thanls tho!

Upgrades to the suspension (or just to the car in general) should be based on what you plan to use the car for. A street machine is going to be radically different from a competition SCCA race car. It really all depends on what you want out of the car, and of course, how big your wallet is.

I would start with the tires first, since they are the single most important part of the suspension. Without good tires, you can have the best suspension in the world and still handle like crap. You want to look for a tire with as much width as possible (within your wheels limitations, of course) and made of a soft, grippy compound. This will help keep your car stuck to the road during handling manuvers. Drag racers like to put skinny tires up front and fat tires out back, but for handling purposes, keeping all four tires the same width is probably the best idea.

What tire should you choose? Well, that's something you will have to figure out for yourself! Do a search on the boards and head over to tirerack.com and do some research on different tires. A lot of people here recommend the Goodyear GS-D3's for 16" wheels. I can't say I have experience with those tires, but I do like my Yokohama AVS dB S2s on my 15" wheels.

After you find yourself a good set of tires that suit your driving style, consider upgrading your shocks and struts. These peices will also place a large part in your car's handling ability. Hardcore SCCA racers would opt for Koni Yellows, as they provide the better handling ability than any other mass produced shocks/struts on the market. Be prepared for a stiff ride with the Yellows, though. They are an all-out racing shock/strut built with only that purpose in mind. Bilstein also sells an "HD" shock/strut line meant for street machines. Basically that means their struts provide a good compromise between ride comfort and handling. And then there is the cheapy stuff that you would buy at AZ and Pepboys (Gabriel/Monroe) that don't handle well at all. Avoid if you interest in handling.

I hope that helps you get started. There's LOTs of other stuff to improve your handling but hopefully this will point you in the right direction. Search, search again, and if you catch a snag in your research, search some more!

Since you said you know nothing about this stuff, this link should help you at least learn the basics and then figure out what questions you really need to ask.
