STB opinions

I'm making my own strut tower brace. My question is....how important is it to tie in the stb to the firewall? Making a couple of extra bars and a mount is no big deal but I'm not going to bother if it really makes no difference in handling.

It makes a huge difference in handeling and helps box in the front end. You should always start with sub frame connectors first though before you add other suspension components.
