Tire size for 17's

Hi guys, I got a set of Torque Thrust II's. Fronts are 17X8 and 17X9.5 out back. What's the best size tires? I was going to go with275/40/17 out back and either a 245/45/17 or 255/40/17 in the front. Comments? pics? am I doing something wrong? What looks best?-Mike

245/45R17 up front, and 285/40R17 in the back, trust me. I was going to run that combo until I realized just how wide that 285 was, too wide for my wheels, should fit yours nicely.

BFGoodrich G-Force T/A KDWS or KDW's, only difference is the KDWS are also designed for snow. I am running the KDWS and they are a GREAT tire.

Yeah I am, I really should have bought 10" wide wheels for the back so I could run those 285's, that would be sweet, and I would need the traction for the plans I have for it.

I bet the most you might be able to fit on an 8" wheel is a 265/40 but don't hold me to that. I bet you would have a hell of a time putting the 275's onto those wheels unless there was a good amount of sidewall.

Don't run a 255/45 in the front and a 275/40 out back that will look funny since the 255 is a taller tire. 245/45 and 275/40 are both 25.7" tall and 255/45 and 285/40 are both 26" tall. With those wheels, I'd go with 255s in front and 285s out back to keep with the stock size diameter.

Compuwiz, the 285/40 is the exact same height as the 245/45. I had them in person and compared them, no difference.

You can actually "see" 3/10 of an inch standing the tires side by side? I am impressed.

Any need for sarcasm? I'm glad you're impressed, and 3/10 of an inch is enough to be able to see it. The 285 might have been a hair taller, but it's not a big enough difference to worry about.

Car: Pair of 92 Z28s
for 17x8" and 17x9.5" rims id go:

245/45
285/40

I currently run 17x8 front 17x9 rear and i went

255/40
285/40

and i regret it...makes my car look like its setup for drag with 17s. They dont handle as well and are not as balanced.

I would have gone 245/45 and a 275/40

255/40s look like **** on a 17x8...just not tall enough and a 285/40 is the max you can run on a 17x9 and it just buldges too much. 17x9.5" would be perfect i think.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

265s? You gotta remember when running some of these not so factory size tires that there are not much offered - if at all? Have you checked to see whats available for that size i have not personally but i dont think ive ever seen that size.

I didnt notice the 255's looking like **** on the 8 inch rims, but I guess that is a matter of taste...I want the drag look....Right now my car is pretty balanced, the front and back are so damn close in height it is hard to tell by looking...26.5, and 26.6, I think it is....Real close...Oh well new rim time...Anyone interested in a set of 5 Voxx 17's, bought in October, or November.............

Honestly all tires are a little different. I have had 315/35 that rubbed pretty badly and also some 315's that didn't rub at all on the same exact vehicle. Every manufacturer builds them a little different.

Well, Here are my options. On my white IROC I am running Centerline Sabers, 17X8 in front and 17X9 or 9.5 in the back. The tires on there are 275 40 17 in the back and 255 40 17 in the front. They look good and the car has a nice rake to it, I lowered it so it has a pretty good stance. I got the TT II's for my Vert. There is a guy on here I met at the East Coast Nats this summer. He had the TT II's with 245 45 17 up front and 275 40 17 in the rear. I got the same rims, 17X8 and 17X9.5 -His car looked great and I didn't notice that the fronts were almost as tall as the rears. Right now there are tires on ebay. Sumtomo 275 40 17 and 245 45 17. The price is right but there is no 285 or 255 offered. Now, That being said. If the fronts are the same height or less than the rears and the backs are wider than the fronts and fill the rim and the wheel well I think I'm going to be happy. Can anybody tell me if this is wrong or if I'm making a mistake.

only thing i hate about my slp zr1s are that they're only 8 inches wide.

been thinking of sending them off to widen 2 inches, then throw on some 285's...

I've got 17 x 8 TT2s with 245/45 17s all around and have been thinking about going with 9.5s and 275/40s on the rear. Would 5.5" of backspace fit in the rear? I was planning to have them made with this backspace and the same -11mm offset as the 8s I have now (4" bs)

I copied my friends set-up. 17X8 on the front with 4.75 backspacing. Off the shelf rim, Rears are 17X9.5 with 5.5 BS. Custom rim, Still waiting on the rears. Yes, These should fit. I have researched this up and down, left and right. I will post a pic of my friends car with this set-up:

Are you guys rolling fender lips? I know of a few guys running 285's and even 315's with minor modifications...including rolling the lips. If interested there are a few guys on other boards who will rent the proper tool for doing this pretty reasonable.

The correct rim width for P275/40R17s is 9.5", while for a P245/45R17 its 8.0".
Also, these two tire sizes are 25.7" in OD, which is the correct factory OD on most F-bodies. FWIW: P245/50R16s are 25.7" in OD also, as well as the big Corvette tire P315/35R17. Swapping between these tire sizes will always keep the speedometer reading correctly.

Thanks Doc, Quick question. If I wanted to give the car a little rake and still fill the wheel well and rim would a 255/40/17 be the way to go?

A P255/40R17 is 25.04" in OD. So, if you put the 255 on the front and the P275/40R17 on the rear, you would have built in a bit of rake, which I think will look very good. The rolling radius is about 0.3" different, that should look pretty cool!

I'm running 245/45 on my 17x8s, but I need wider wheels because it's not enough for my 365 RWTQ I'm puttin' down.

Re: Tire size for 17's

Well, I got it done. I have been driving around for about a month. The 255-40-17 is too small for the front. Already dented a TTII twice. I am thinking about moving the 275's up to the front and getting a bigger back tire. What's the biggest I can go? Nobody really makes a 295 do they? Help me out here guys........
