Car: 1986 Pontiac Firebird S/E
Engine: 305 carb'd V8
Transmission: 4-speed auto
Axle/Gears: Stock
Is it safe to say.....
.....that I need new tie rods? I jacked the car up today to see if the ball joints were bad.
From what I've heard and read if the wheel has any play from top to bottom more then an 1/8 of an inch you need new ball joints. My wheel didn't really move much at all from top to bottom but it had a lot of play side-to-side.

If you have any doubts and have the money, I say just replace them all. But that's just what I did. At least you know you have parts that aren't bad.

Well I do plan on replacing them all..........eventually. But I do want to at least replace what is bad now. Money is definitly an issue at this time.
