Rear end code..not in the book?

I am pulling parts from my donor car to put on my v6-v8 swap project. The donor car is a 1986 IROC-Z (its a P.O.S. don't worry). I got the numbers from the rear end and they read 6HS C160 L (the code is very clear). I have checked the books and I have not found anything that matches. Can anyone help? The car does have rear disk brakes and I was wanting to put it on the good car. I don't want to pull both rear ends unless it would be worth it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

Re: Rear end code..not in the book?

There are 6Hx codes for 88/89 axles but not 6HS. What kind of disk brakes are on it? Steel or aluminum calipers? Maybe it's a 90-92 diff that someone swapped in.

C160 L

C = Buffalo assembly
160 = Day of year
L is probably an E which means posi or it's a 1 meaning day shift.

When in doubt, pull the cover and look inside.

Re: Rear end code..not in the book?

I'm not sure what the codes mean, but if the rear in the IROC-Z has the disk brakes and you want them, why not just swap rear ends. It's probably the easiest way to make the swap. Then again, you haven't mentioned anything about which rear ends have a posi or what gear ratios are in each. Are they both 10-bolts, both 9-bolts, or is one a 10-bolt and the other a 9-bolt. If you have one 10 and one 9, your going to need different backing plates for the brakes to be swapped.

Mike

If your not sure...
G80 = posi
To know what gear ratio is in the car (or what came stock), post up the RPO codes. The codes concerning gear ratio will start with the letter G.
